I absolutely love the record: Bitterness Centrifuge and Are you a Dancer are songs you only find together on a Mogwai album. Huge songs that blow your fucking head off and delicate fragile songs that make you ache.
Hope I get to see this live.

I was wondering if John was involved in the recording /composing. IIRC they worked on it in July after the Glasgow / London gigs (http://ithica45.proboards.com/thread/1728/mogwai-soundtrack-mark-cousins-film ) so maybe that's when he left actually?
I am enjoying it, really growing on me after a few proper listens. Had it on the train yesterday and Pripyat was playing both times I went through Accrington and made it seem rather menancing...

Yeah, pure speculation on my part, but I wonder if John had already decided to leave the band prior to the Anniversary shows but felt it was appropriate to stay on for the gigs and then depart - hence no involvement in the soundtrack? Pure speculation as I said.......we will likely never know.

Mogwai are currently doing a Guardian Q&A and they mentioned recording new songs for their new LP at the end of the year, interestingly with Dave Fridmann, rather than Paul Savage. For me that's a good thing. My favourite quip from the Q&A - S: Do you remember what Hunted By A Freak was originally called? D: Moomin Cum.

I remember seeing "Moomin" on 2002 setlist sheets. It was also called C# for a while.

Barry answered your question in this interview www.thelineofbestfit.com/news/latest-news/kelly-lee-owens-wild-beasts-and-more-quiz-mogwai-atomicI have to ask about John Cumming leaving the band after twenty years...how does it feel being a four-piece?“I think…it’s hard to tell really. We did the record after he told us last year, and when we did the updated version John had left by that point, so he’s not on it at all. I think it’s different sounding because of that, and I think the next album will also be different sounding because of it. But a change is as good as a whatever you call it haha! He’s probably happy not doing something he didn’t enjoy anymore. We had to do a show quite quickly after he left, and we had to get Scott from Sons and Daughters in to rehearse for a week. But it was actually fine, and it wasn’t that weird because we all know Scott really well. But we’re not going to have an extra guitarist, it’ll just be the four of us from now on.”

I've got a ticket for the Barbican Atomic show that I can't go to anymore. If anyone is interested let me know. Sorry Rob if this isn't allowed on the forum.

Well, both Edinburgh Playhouse shows were fantastic....Sat night was in the Circle, just a couple of rows behind Mark Cousins as it turns out. Sunday was in row D of the stalls. My mate was in the circle again on the Sunday and he told me the LH side of the PA kept having issues, but it was crystal clear down below. Great shows!

So I have to say this album, like both Rave Tapes and Les Revenants were not the types of albums I was immediately sold on but after a bunch of proper listens through, like most have said on here, I'm really digging it! I'm intrigued to see where the band is headed with the new album! Cannot wait!!!

I've got to travel for work next week, so I now have a spare ticket for Coventry, for which I'm open to offers. Face price is £32. It's an e-ticket.

Looking forward to Coventry. Can anyone confirm the length of the set in terms of time! We have a train at 10.25 and it's a 10 minute walk from the venue. Mogwai are on at 9pm so is it likely to be longer than 70 minutes?

At Edinburgh shows they came on at 9pm and they were off stage at roughly 10.15pm......... They over run the film by a couple of minutes, Stuart playing with his pedals....lol

Half way to the gig I was bemoaning the fact that I'd chosen to drive and that the Barbican was an infinitely better idea. On arriving and seeing the queue I was even more convinced as I knew that had we taken the train we'd have missed 20 minutes or so........
Once inside everything changed. Decided not to sit and so found a position on the right hand side on a few steps directly in front of the bell. Having seen the documentary twice before I wasn't as thrilled to see this as I'd been for Zidane and in truth I personally found that more musically interesting although visually less so. Bitterness centrifuge & Tzar were the personal high points for me and although it wasn't overwhelmingly emotional, the subject matter and being a child of the 60's it was hard not to reflect on the sheer stupidity of our race. After Zidane the band played a couple of "normal" songs and going to the event I was disappointed to hear that this wouldn't be the case, on leaving the venue it's easy to see why they didn't. Well pleased that I made the trip even if my satnav hates me! Lovely venue and I really don't want to offend anyone from Coventry but given it's city status to say that I was underwhelmed would be an overstatement! Great to see some old faces and some new (better looking) ones!

Great to see some old faces and some new (better looking) ones! Oi! Agree with the general comments here that it was a very enjoyable event. Great venue, great sound. Music wasn't bad either.

What's the general conscientious regarding recordings from these gigs, i only ask given that the live music is played over what I imagine to be copyrighted material.
If it makes you feel any better Rob......you're the best looking mathematician/teacher I've ever met!
Recording has been faithful to what these aged ears heard last night!

Without wanting to be ungrateful, that's the very definition of a barbed compliment!
As no-one else has mentioned it yet - Luke Sutherland crept on and off stage a couple of times last night, playing guitar and, I think, violin at one point.

Nice piece, that.
I haven't been able to make the Barbican show, unfortunately, but I do like the venue. I saw Low play there a couple of years ago, and will be seeing Stars Of The Lid in a couple of weeks time. I reckon their set-up will be just about spot-on for the concert hall.

So bummed my copy of the Atomic LP came a few days ago and the vinyl is so warped it's unbelievable. Sadly I ordered it online and would have to pay to have it shipped back to the seller for them to determine if it's a problem (bad Amazon seller). This is now twice, my Les Revenants vinyl has a defect in the vinyl (not a scratch but more of a swirl blemish) that ruins the mid to latter part of side A...quite bummed.
At least my CoDY box is being replaced...I've had no luck recently with Mogwai vinyl.
