There seem to be a lot of MXR and Way Huge pedals scattered about... Dunlop sponsorship/ gift perhaps? John and Stuart's pedalboards are both making me very jealous... very intrigued to try out the Way Huge stuff in person now given that John was so enthusiastic about how good it all sounds. In the credits for Hardcore, it says that Mogwai plays Jim Dunlop, which would suggest an endorsement deal indeed. Nice to see them branching out beyond athletic gear...

I'd like to learn the intro to "Rano Pano" on my guitar. Can anyone help me what the chords are? Thanks.

those are great photos. I am quite impressed they were able to fit all their stuff in there. hah! Good thing they aren't exactly the most energetic performers, that probably helps a bit.

Something of interest that I have noticed on this leg of the tour is that Dom seems to be favouring his Electrical Guitar Co., and Travis Bean basses almost exclusively. I first noticed in Montreal, and recent live photos seem to confirm this. His blonde Jazz bass only made a brief appearance that night. Besides Stuart playing it, Dom may have only used it for one song. I saw them on the UK leg of the tour, and didn't notice the same trend.
What's notable is that these aluminum neck guitars have a very unique tonality - round, dark, and smooth. An interesting contrast to his usual preference for EMG-equipped Fender basses.

I'd like to learn the intro to "Rano Pano" on my guitar. Can anyone help me what the chords are? Thanks. Listen to Rano Pano at the Metro, Chicago show on the archive. Stuart accidentally starts in conventional tuning and then you can here him tune his 3rd string down from D to B. Strum 2nd and 3rd strings together, keeping 2nd string open and walking the melody on the 3rd string up and down like this; 2, 4, 5, 4, 2, 4, 5, 7, 5, 7, 5, 4, 0, 4, 2, 5, 4, 0, 2, 4, 5, 7, 9, 2, 5, 7, 9, 10, 12, 10, 9, 9, 7, 5, 5, 7, 5, 4, 2 (repeat indefinitely) It's probably best if you've listened to the song hundreds of times like I have so you can just play it by ear, cause I would't be able to follow that nonsense otherwise.

I'm pretty sure John uses his Musicman guitar with the A, B, C, D, E, F (!!) tuning on Rano, so prob best to stick to learning Stuart and Dom's parts for this one!

A while ago, John from Mogwai made patched for the GTR software by waves. One of the presets is for that Fear Satan style of delay. In the program he uses TWO delay pedals. The settings for the 1st are as follows Mix(Dry/Wet Mix) 56% Feedback 70% Time 310ms
Then fed straight into another delay pedal with the following Mix 52% Feedback 90% Time 390ms
Personally I find the feedback on the second pedal a bit too much so I turn that down to 75. Hope this helps.

I was wondering what kind of effect is used during one of their performance of "Ex-Cowboy". The gig in particular is a show in London in 1999. I guess the crowd was too noisy (talkative) that they decided to amp up the distortion. It sounds a wee bit like the effect Godspeed uses, the screwdriver one. Don't know if this is relevant but I'm guessing it's John who's doing the noise. I've attached a link to the show so if anyone could download the song and hear for themselves. Cheers. archive.org/details/mogwai1999-10-16.flac16

Hm, Simon Braithwaite! Anyway, Stuart and John's guitar gear list seems incomplete. They didn't add his Gibson guitar and there's probably more there.

Hey Superfuzz, let me fill in the bass pedal board blanks for you. The unmarked box in the middle is an LFD Bass Distortion pedal made by Sleeping Dog. It's a fantastic pedal, it's incredibly versatile. The black box below the micro synth is a Jim Dunlop boost/ line driver pedal. The unmarked pedal next to it is a switcher that our good friend Ozzy built for me. The boost pedal and the Micro Synth are in a separate loop so the switcher pedal is used to bring it in and out of the mix. I hope this is of some help.

I had meant to post this when I first came across it, but forgot and rediscovered it in my camera roll tonight. This is a screen cap of an instagram post from Gav Maxwell who is one of the guitar techs for the band. It shows the guitar selections, and tunings for all their songs for the players on stage right, being Alex and Barry. Interesting to see the variety of tunings. I knew they used altered tunings—especially John, but didn't realize how many there were. Pretty cool insight into the inner-workings of the production, and especially compelling as a guitarist.
