Following James' suggestion last week, he and I have started work on updating the 'bootlegs' page of Brightlight. The intention is to put together as complete a list of known live recordings (with source info where it's available) as we can. brightlight.youngteam.co.uk/eng/bootlegs.phpCurrent state of play - I've updated the list as far as the end of 2002. Source info has been included for 1996 and 1997 shows, as far as we've been able to find it so far. How can you help? For starters, with shows you think we've missed up to and including 2002, so we can add them on. I'll post again in this thread when we've completed further stages - I don't want a deluge of info on shows post-2002, for example, because we haven't even begun working on those yet.

Thanks for the offer, Josh - I'll post here when we're moving beyond 2002. ever thought about moving this stuff to more of a db-type forM? heh. the main barriers to this happening (ever?) are: i have no idea how to do it i have no time to do it I can't see the former changing any time soon, and the latter became more the case than ever before on 5th Oct 2006, and will remain that way. What time I get to spend on BL is always going to be spent publishing 'new' content rather than regurgitating old content, as far as possible.

fair enough.. but yeah, i think that most of the info i could help you with would be post 2001/2002 or so, so yeah definitely shoot me a PM or an email or something.. sometimes i read this board a bit infrequently.

i thought i posted this, but apparently i didn't...
i didn't realize there were ~70 mogwai recordings up on archive.org!

I think including links to archive.org and probably db.etree.org would be worthwhile. Should help the page serve as a resource rather than as a tease from those in the know. e.g. 18/10/03 | [etree] | academy, manchester | | | [source 1 - ecm-717 > mz-r900] [archive] | | | [source 2 - aud > ? > mp3 only?] | | | [source 3 - ahem ] |
etree link probably wouldn't have to be quite that blatant, could just be on the date text, or after the venue, but you get the idea.

Aye, definitely like. It's worth including the link to the archive, so people know where to get this stuff. It's good that mogwai have an open taping policy, so it helps if people know that and where to find some shows freely available. Once they've bought the albums of course.
As for the database idea, great idea, but do you want to be the one who goes through and codes it, makes it and updates it? I don't think it's worth it for all the use it will get; better to have something simple and effective.
As for continuing, my computer's broken at the moment, I'm writing this on a friend's computer. In mid-late April, I will have time to get back to this and get this finished with all the source info, if it's not done. I had a list of source info for 98-99 ready to go, so hopefully I can recover that. Until then tho.

not so sure about the etree link. i personally feel (or at least felt this way in the past) that db.etree.org is just a haven for misinformation when it comes to setlists/dates/recording info. i've seen so much wrong stuff on there that i can't stand even consider using it as any sort of reference. but the archive thing is a good thing, i think. i was planning on putting archive links for my site and it would also help people who might be ignorant of the whole deal to be able to get the recordings without thinking they have to go to some shop or show and drop $30 on a cd from some scumbag. i definitely support putting archive links with the recording info.

update - the link above is now dead. the basic info, and links to the lists, is now here: brightlight.youngteam.co.uk/eng/trading.phpI've included links to archive etc here. I have no intention of embedding hundreds of links in the list pages, only for them to become obsolete within weeks - i just checked the link to archive that i was using from the media page, for example, and that was already out of date. if people can't be bothered to follow the links, their hard luck. and josh - i agree entirely on the etree thing - the 2001 listings, for example, have numerous mistakes in them.

09/09/03 - schoeps ccm4 -> sonosax sx-m2 -> m1
05/23+24+25+27/02 - ss dsm6s->pa6lc3->m1 05/22/02 - microtech gefell 200s->ps2->ad20->d8 -- myself and the person for the above four shows patched out of this person so we didn't have to run our gear and it turned out terribly. it's a basically unlistenable recording. there is a better version that's out there. i think it's like csb (or csc) -> d8 or something. the sbd source for the chicago show was recorded to an m1
06/21/01 - csb -> d8 and also ss dsm6s->pa6lc->m1 06/22/01 - sound professionals binaurals -> sharp md-ms722 11/25/01 - schoeps mk4->kc5->cmc6->mp2->hhb mdp500 06/19/01 - SP SPSM1->sharp ms702 06/16/01 - ss dsm6s->pa-6lc3->m1 06/17/01 - sbd->m1 06/10/01 - csb->m1 06/09/01 - oade mics->m1 06/07/01 - sp binaural->sharp md-mt831 05/26/01 - ecm-ds70p->mz-r55 -- i think there was also a video of this show on ebay at one point 05/25/01 - csb->d8 04/24+25/01 - schoeps mk3+cmbi->sbm-1->m1 (these are really nice) 03/21/01 - csb->d7
i'll dig up more info for you.
i wish random, relatively 'useless' knowledge was actually worth something.

Further contributions welcome from anyone with a bit of spare time.

damn i'll have to search out those 4022 and mk41 tapes.
IMO, the gear is worth the investment if you use it. if i had a spare $10k, i would drop another $10k on recording gear for sure.
i haven't bought any gear since 2003, but when i have the money, i think i'm going to upgrade first to an edirol r09 so i can do 24bit/48khz recordings until i can afford to get like a SD702 for 24/96 stuff later. i don't know if i would upgrade my preamp or not. i would like to get a second pair of mics, but i am not sure what i would pick up if i got a pair.

It´s a hell of a lot of money. Saying that, I´m probably going to get an R-09 soon. Then after that, I´ll probably start saving for some new mics. Then I´ll need a new pre-amp.... ;D
Let me know if you get a copy of those tapes, would be quite cool. I´ll probably contact that dude sometime myself anyway, so I´ll let you know if I get a copy anytime soon.

i was skeptical about going to flash media, but honestly i'm tired of / too lazy to keep buying dats. my deck is still going strong, though, after 7 years. i'd really prefer to get the 702 (i've used the 722 before). the 702, while still about $700 cheaper than the 722, is still way out of my price range, so the r09 looks good. the r1 is cheaper, but i've seen it before and i didn't really like the display and all that...
to me the mics are more important than anything as far as gear goes (to me), but also from everything i've read, stepping up to 24bit is a big difference (and a lot bigger of a difference than going from 48khz->96khz)

Any shot of anyone trying to put those 2001 & 2003 pro-shot/tv vid's together on a DVD? I'll be more than happy to do a b&p with 3 or 4 blanks for it! I'm unfortunately unable to get to see any of these things because the US TV stations suck and never show live music!

Right, I've emailed Rob with all the details remaining to be updated. I took all the details from db.etree.org, phishhook.com, tapetrader.com and random traders' lists that I know. If you know of something not on the list, or see something that's in error, please let someone know.
There were a couple of sources I couldn't find/remember info about - 25/5/02 or 27/5/02 - was there a webcast for one of these? Would like to put that in so people don't get it confused with the dat source.
toy's factory 2003 video - clip of my father my king. Saw this on pure live gigs a while ago - anyone know what show it came from? Pro-shot?
PS - I'm open for trades for mogwai if you've got some high quality stuff, like dats, sbds etc. Just no "sony ecm mic > md", unless it's old. See my list in the signature.

all of those with schoeps ccm4->sx-m2->m1 i also shot video at all six of those. the full show for 03/08 and 03/12. only various parts of the other 4.
also video for 5/10 (2 different cameras) and a 24/96 audio source (4-channel) -- schoeps mk4v and mbho (i'll dig up the mic model info) both to edirol r4

This is perhaps a bit naive in light of the amount of recordings there are listed but - what's people's favourites?
I've only two or three Mogwai shows ( ATP 2000 + 2004) I downloaded but the Denver Gothic Theatre two disc soundboard set from 03.05.06 is astonishing.
I've got gazillions of other bands live shows cos I use to collect them if anyone can do me swap on some similar quality Mog stuff I'd be well chuffed.

riverside 1998 is fantastic for the best, most brutal version of mogwai fear satan...it is astonishing. also, nita's hideaway 2001 (i think it's 2001) and lee's palace, toronto 2001 are fab. as is wedgewood rooms, portsmouth 2003. the first one's a radio broadcast, but the others are fantastic audience tapes.
