Records released in 2009 then. I'd consider myself to be pretty much out of touch with what the world at large is listening to, but 2009 seems to be spectacularly lacking in musical highlights so far?
Obvious exceptions would be the three albums released on Chemikal Underground so far this year (Phantom Band, Aidan Moffat, De Rosa), all of which I'd recommend anyone to seek out.
I've seen reems of praise for the Animal Collective record but I haven't heard it.
Any other thoughts?

Some good things I've been hearing this year, that may appeal to folks:
HUNTER’S LOAF – We Buy Gold (semi-acoustic post-rock, a bit same-y but still good) LAND OF KUSH – Against The Day (very interesting Middle Eastern flavoured rock and pop on Constellation fronted by Sam Shalabi) LOCRIAN – Drenched Lands (superb drone/doom on keyboards and guitar only) OUR LOVE WILL DESTROY THE WORLD – Stillborn Plague Angels (ace new project from Campbell Kneale of Birchville Cat Motel)

The forthcoming Bardo Pond record on Threelobed sounds great too. www.threelobed.com/tlr/tlr067.htmlVinyl + bonus CD edition, pre-order only, available until until next weekend. Am I wrong to assume people still buy records?

Probably broadly wrong. I can't remember the last time I bought a record without having heard it first, which is quite sad really isn't it. For my part, I do a lot of downloading, work out a list of what I've loved most from the year, and then buy from that in bulk come December.
That said, I spent quite a bit last week getting some Constantines 7"s and other bits and pieces shipped to me direct from Arts&Crafts.

I suppose my music buying habits come from a different generation now. Recently, the only records I can recall buying having already heard them would be The Hawk Is Howling and the Remember Remember record, both of which I got on promo. I really don't download very much at all, and the vast majority of what I do download is stuff from outside the released catalogue of the artist concerned.

Not heard much new this year (released this year anyway).. Seems to be a bit of a dearth..
One thing my friends and I have remarked on is the lack of good gigs passing through glasgow - seems to be a quiet patch at the moment?
Would also consider myself to be completely out of touch with what the general listening public likes!

Am I wrong to assume people still buy records? \ i don't buy much, but that's mainly becuase mogwai is one of the only bands I listen to that still puts out records. The bands I loved in High School and College are what I listen to now, and most of them are dead and gone. Pelican is the one of the only bands I can think of that I've "discovered" in the past 5 years and listen to regularly. i fear change.

I never really answered the question, but mostly I've been listening to dubstep (hyperdub are running away with the year already, and none of their promised LPs are even out yet). Techno: Ben Klock's One is really good. R&B: The-Dream's record is really, really fun, but I doubt it would get much play around here.

I've been playing the new Mono album all week. It's amazing. I also saw them play in London on Thursday, and they blew me away. Steve Albini has captured them perfectly on the albums.

is probably the best album I've heard so far this year. Hmmm...maybe De Rosa is better. Two very different records, anyway.

The Crippled Black Phoenix two-disc boxed set is superb. Indeed so. I have received my 2-CD from Cargo records but I still have to wait for the second pressing of the LP version. Invada/Cargo have accepted too many advance bookings.

I didn't realise the vinyl pressing had even been released yet. There's been no mention of it on the Invada blog.

I didn't realise the vinyl pressing had even been released yet. There's been no mention of it on the Invada blog. Well, Justin mentioned it on the CBP blog: Well, the albums are out and the boxset is already hard to find, apparently they're all gone but ye may find a few still dotted around if ye can be bothered tracking them down. There are still a few copies of the "200 Tons..." version, although i am informed that there are more to be pressed. I hope those of you that wanted to get hold of the proper two-album version have managed to get it, it's all a bit strange for us, we didn't expect the response it's had, if ye didn't get the box, ye should harrass Invada so they have to make more. Oh, and if ye do find where still has it, let me know, i want a copy! Cargo records have sent me a mail stating that the shipping date for the second pressing of the LP will be May 28th 2009. Unfortunatley, due to stocking problems the following item(s) will be delayed:
Order No : XXXXXXXX Catalog Code : INV076LP Description : 200 Tons Of Bad Luck Quantity : 1
The new shipping date will be 28 May 2009, alternatively if you would rather cancel your order for this item, please contact costas@cargorecords.co.uk .

Bike For Three! - More Heart Than Brains (http://www.myspace.com/bikeforthree) Buck 65 collaborates with a Belgian beat-master chanteuse Greetings from Tuskan. Best stuff Buck's done in years and a solid listen all the way through to the last couple of tracks. He's in proper story telling mood, with someone else focusing on getting the beats out really helping it to strike a tight groove.

Great record. There's a couple of tracks I reckon he did live last time I saw him. I can't think we'll be hearing too much from Buck now he's working for CBC. James - presume you've grabbed the Dirtbike album from Buck's website? Oh, and I need your new address.

I am so far out the loop, but loving Horrors and the new Dino Jnr. Both superb.
Cheers for the Buck link, love that guy, and knew nothing of this. If I wasn't such a technotwat I would have that Dirtbike stuff to listen to anywhere but on my computer too.

The best album for me this year is (unless Guns N Roses manages to release another masterpiece before this year ends...)
Mew - No more stories...
Close on second place is
Animal Collective - Merriweather post pavilion
There's probably more on my list but I reckon I've listened the most to both said records.
Who's next? (not the album, but Neil? Rob? Tifanny?)

My top 3 from 2009: Crippled Black Phoenix: The Resurrectionists / Night Raider Built To Spill: There Is No Enemy Giardini di Mirò: Il Fuoco (The CD is already out, LP+CD package to be released around Xmas) ===== And in no particular order: Part Chimp: Thriller Acetate Zero: Hesitation Blues Soap And Skin: Lovetune For Vacuum Sonic Youth: The Eternal Fuck Buttons: Tarot Sport Sophia: There Are No Goodbyes Dinosaur Jr.: Farm Mono: Hymn To The immortal Wind

The Built To Spill album is proving very hard for me to get into. I was greatly looking forward to hearing it but after every listen so far I've been a bit...er...'meh' about the whole thing. This pains me greatly, as it's had good press and lots of decent comment around. It also pains me greatly to say that I was underwhelmed by the Sophia album (but not by the live set which accompanied it, which was great). I've persisted with both of these records beyond the call of duty as both bands have released some of my favourite records ever, but they're really not doing it for me at the moment.
'Thriller' is fucking great, though. I'll have a think about what others I'd include before Neil hits us with his usual 50-item list.

Right, I have thought. I'm sure I've missed something.
In no particular order:
The Mountain Goats - The Life Of The World To Come Bike For Three - More Heart Than Brains The Longcut - Open Hearts Part Chimp - Thriller De Rosa - Prevention Eat Skull - Wild & Inside
Very close behind: Phantom Band/Aidan Moffat/Lord Cut Glass British Sea Power - Man of Aran Alasdair Roberts - Spoils The output of the Threelobed label has been consistently great
Been listening to Envy a lot this year too.
Worthy of mention - I've only very recently heard Maserati for the first time. The 12+ live shows I've picked up are fantastic, and so are some of the tracks on the only record of theirs I've bought so far (Passages, released this year by Temporary Residence). Unfortunately some of the other tracks on there are dubious remixes and it's not a strong enough set overall to make it worth me recommending it to anyone who hasn't heard them. It does, however, contain some of my favourite tracks of the year.
Mostly white men with guitars then. Ah well.

my turn: 2009 has been a fantastic year for new music for me. I have not enjoyed more new music since probly 1997. in the previous 5 years i'd be lucky to have got 1 album released that year, whereas this year i've got 7...is unheard of, especially with a top 4 i hadn't even heard of before this year.
anyways, down to my list: 1. Part Chimp - Thriller 2. Jenny Lewis - Acid Tongue 3. The Felice Brothers - Yonder Is The Clock 4. De Rosa - Prevention 5. Grand Duchy - Petits Fours 6. Micah P. Hinson - All Dressed Up And Smelling Of Strangers 7. Black Heart Procession - Six
