Has anyone ever come across any online discussion about issues with Sony's own-brand minidiscs?
At the end of 2003, I had a couple of Sony minidiscs fail on me in epic fashion whilst attempting to make a live recording (einzack, you know what this was).
At the moment, I'm in the middle of archiving a stack of minidisc recordings of radio sessions and live shows to wav and then to FLAC so that I can put the minidiscs in a box in the loft and forget about them. There have been very few issues so far, but every time I have come upon a problem (mysterious dropouts, for example), it's been a Sony minidisc with recordings I made around 2003/2004. I wonder whether there's some sort of manufacturing problem , or a degradation issue? Every other brand has been fine so far.

After a while, read or format errors started to appear. Strangely, some of these MDs were playable on my Sony MD deck while they wouldn't play on my mobile MD recorder (Sharp) anymore.

Thanks Markus, good to hear it's not just me with this problem. It's to be hoped no-one has any recordings of significance on Sony minidiscs of this era then.

A few tricks for recovering data from damaged MDs. Not sure, if this works with your deck, though. www.borus.de/minidisc/
