Quite possibly the scariest thing I've ever seen.
Really hope that anyone who could be affected is okay - everyone on the Pacific coastlines, basically.

I agree with everything you said. This reminds me of the Tsunami of 2004. I hope it doesn't reach that height and the amount of losses though. I just saw the explosion of the nuclear factory on BBC.

Iron Maiden were due to play a couple of shows in Japan when the quake hit. So the band are offering the special tour t-shirt to all and donating proceeds to the relief effort. Well done them! Shirts are out of stock at the moment, but I'll be getting one when they're available. www.ironmaiden.com/shop/web/index.php#

Relying entirely on what I've read around over the last few days - why is the music industry going Japan relief mental? The Japanese Goverment and the Japanese Red Cross have clearly stated that they have enough funds to deal with the devastating consequences of the earthquake and tsunami.
I don't remember Indonesia Aid concerts at Wembley Arena after the tsunami in 2004? Or an unending stream of junk-level compilations? Did ATP organise a Concert For Sri Lanka? Something very. very odd going on at the moment. Does Japan have a very large community of legal download buyers (the music industry's equivalent of oil)?
It'll be VERY interesting to see what happens the next time Peru gets hit by a massive earthquake.

I guess John Lennon wanted to push his long lost solo career...
I guess The Black Eyed Peas are not rich enough.

big Japanese fanbases, maybe? I don't know but whatever the reason, still doesn't escape the fact this was the fifth or sixth largest earthquake on record

The instinct to help is entirely understandable, but the music industry seems to have chosen to get into a feeding frenzy on this in a way that it wouldn't (and didn't) for more destructive disasters in other countries. Odd.
