Well ... Ally Pally - discuss. The first half was stellar (and a "blimey!" setlist), but was it just me that thought the sound got muddier throughout? It took me 20 seconds to work out what "Batcat" actually was!

Well they obviously had some technical gremlins, but I didn't think there was any big problem with the sound. Certainly knew it was Batcat as soon as the riff kicked in (and a bloody good Batcat too). Superb day. Codeine were my highlight, but that took nothing away from Mudhoney, Dirty Three or Mogwai. Enjoyed the Can DJ set too.

Perhaps it was because I moved half way through - I was on the barrier on the left for the first half but after going to get some water I ended up watching for further back on Stuart's side. Regardless, it was a great day and yes, Codeine had people in tears. I thought Mudhoney were great as well.

Codeine were completely wonderful. They seemed genuinely surprised by the affectionate reception they got. I wish they had played "Realize", but there we are. It was almost unbearably hot by the time Mogwai played - too damn hot an hour into their set.

Codeine's set from Primavera Sound Festival is scheduled to be broadcast on WFMU in the U.S. (http://wfmu.org/) next week-end. The streams will be archived on their website or the Free Music Archive (http://freemusicarchive.org/curator/Primavera_Sound/). RNE Radio3 (from Spain) might broadcast some of the festival highlights as well.

Sim - were you to the left of John as you looked at him? If so I took your place on the barrier . That's where I was - never been at the front for a gig ever what a treat. I wasn't sure about the sound at points but didn't know how much of it was to do with position and wearing my newly-purchased professional earplugs (checked which DB level to use with Kenny the lovely sound guy on twitter - he advised the full strength option). Must confess that I risked going without for Jim Morrison to feel the full force Missed the visuals for werewolf but loved a slightly more mixed up set. However it was the final two that finished me off - think I mentioned in the other thread that it was friend's funeral the day before, so for MFS I just sobbed through the final blasts and the security came to my aid - I assured them I was ok (!) Similarly batcat was bang on... The way I was feeling they could have followed with GMS and MFMK and Herod and Christmas steps ... Always left wanting more I suppose Bumped into Martin outside which was lovely, such a nice bloke, we were had a chat about the stone roses, twitter, funerals and his drum issues at the barrowlands gig last December. A bit later on the whole band were outside but felt wrong to barge in, however I did cross paths with Barry by the doors and got him to sign my new hoody. A bit daft but you don't often get the opportunity. So if you read this, thanks Mr Burns.

Yes that was probably me - I was suffering from serious dehydration at that point and as said above, the heat was stifling Incidentally, did I imagine a "tease" of MFMK (before Auto Rock?)... Anyway, for anyone interested I uploaded my video of Codeine's first song to YouTube. I didn't video any Mogwai as my phone was dying by that point!

Anyway, for anyone interested I uploaded my video of Codeine's first song to YouTube. Thanks! As I doubt I'll be able to make it to their Chicago show I really enjoyed seeing this. As far as the sound getting muddier throughout the show, I don't know if this was the reason in this case, but in the past I have noticed at mogwai shows the sound getting "muddier" as the show goes on was really caused by my ears ringing more and more so the sounds didn't come across as clearly.

Sounds like there were a lot of us standing very close to each other - why the heck did I forget to wear a "bl" badge? I was also on the barrier on the left hand side - the massive bloke wearing a Blur Are Shite shirt and a Milwaukee Brewers baseball cap. Aidan Moffat was stood just behind me to my right throughout Dirty Three and Mogwai. I was pretty dehydrated, but at least security kept up a fairly steady flow of glasses of water for those of us right at the front. And I too was wearing professional earplugs - Alpine Music Safe Pro - for the first time, and I'd highly recommend them (I went with the medium filters). Apart from anything else, if there was any audience chatter in the quiet bits, it was filtered right out.

Yelobeli- how funny, we must have been nearby, I don't think you were next to me though as neither fella was wearing a cap. I dont' have a BL badge, will get one for next tour (it makes me sad to think that this will be a long time off unless I somehow get to Europe in the summer). I took a sign to a the arctic monkeys gig I went to in sheffield last year as a way to find forum friends, it worked a treat though I did look like a loon of course. Mine are alpine earplugs too, the lack of tinnitus the next day is a wonderful thing well worth the £20. and you're right about the chatter.
Ooh guess what, whilst I'm posting on here - I have found out this morning that I'm going to be on Lauren Laverne's bbc6 programme tomorrow, on the biorythms feature, and one of my choices is How to be a Werewolf - it's my 'emotional' track, though to be frank I could have picked 3 mogwai songs to fit the the physical/ emotional /intellectual remit. In my email to the show I explained (as I said on here) that I was looking forward to at a good cry at IBYM.

I was stood in front of Dominic, about 3 rows back.
Managed to meet up with a Swiss guy who's contributed a lot to Brightlight over the years, that was good - very pleasant hour sat in the park over the road with a beer mid-afternoon.
Codeine were stunning. Bill Wells & Aidan Moffat were very enjoyable - quote of the afternoon was Aidan's "If I was curating the festival, I'd have asked Bananarama to reform" Mogwai were damn good.
I'll be interested to see a printed setlist - I got a glipse of one and I'm sure it had Ratts as an encore, but I may be wrong.
As several folks have said, a few degrees cooler would have been welcome. Security guards seemed to be doing a decent job of looking after people.
Good day out all told.
Good to hear a few of you investing in earplugs, I've been using something similar to those Alpine plugs for about 8 years now and they've defintely slowed the deterioration in my hearing.

I also saw Floor, Harvey Milk, the Can DJ set, some of Chavez, Codeine, Mudhoney (also brilliant), Balam Acab (just ordered the album), and the last of The Dirty Three's set (a lovely piano-led tune, don't know the title). I was in the Kylie Minoise "Die Yuppie Scum!" t-shirt, with a picture of an axe-wielding parrot-man.

and the last of The Dirty Three's set (a lovely piano-led tune, don't know the title) "Ashen Snow", I think. I was the shaven headed guy with glasses and the dark blue Jesus Lizard t-shirt. Some more of my dodgy videos Codeine "Cave In" - Chavez "New Room" - Mudhoney "In n Out Of Grace" (clip) -

'the instagram era' It also looks no worse then a photo of a slightly creased bit of paper taken at a slightly off angle in a dark flat at night. As a social network application, I like it. As a photographer I can get a quick dirty fix on something. You're also under no obligation to use it! I'd have offered to take a clean one so you didn't have to crop my bag out if you weren't so condescending about it! Anyway. Hello, I've been reading for ages but... I thought the gig was outstanding, one of the best times I've seen them. Batcat felt pretty brutal. I thought the sound was great from where I was as well (just in front of the PA on the right), even through the noise it was clear enough to hear wht was going on, and the lights were super. I know Chris, one of their techs, from elsewhere so thought I'd see if I could grab a setlist and he grabbed the picks as well, what a nice man. You should check his band, Elohymn, as well. Ace.

I like to think I'm providing a useful service still but maybe the site's had its day.

While there are long periods where I don't visit BL, I tend to check it quite a bit when there's a North American tour, looking at set lists and such. I always find the past gig history very useful. I'm really looking forward to seeing the posters from this upcoming tour and hopefully people attending the shows will submit pictures of them. I'm still debating between Detroit and Chicago or both. Will probably depend on how much they are mixing up the set lists each night.

Why don't you ask them if they could send the setlist for the concert to you before or after the concert in a e-mail?
