First show this year with no Rano Pano Wouldn't mind if they keep that up for the next few shows. One of the VERY few mogwai tracks I don't overly care for. For people who have been to shows so far, how is balam acab? I'm going to detroit tomorrow but will be hard pressed to get there in time for their set (supposedly mogwai go on at 9:45).

I can't believe how early the stage times have been for some of the shows on the US tour - do US gigs always run this early? Mogwai on stage at 8pm at a couple of the shows.

I live in ohio and that certainly isn't typical for shows around here...which is why I specifically asked crofoot about their start time. If they were going on at 8 I wouldn't be able to make it in time from work (3.5 hour drive and get off work at 5). I do think some areas like boston tend to have earlier shows in general as mass transit shuts down relatively early.

(but i'm usually driving at least 2 hours each way to shows)

Well, it's true I have been fortunate enough to see them a bunch, but still - there are so many other great songs in the back catalog it's just unfortunate (to me) to have a quarter to a third of the show taken up by the same 3 or 4 songs every time out... Mostly I'm bummed we didn't hear Xmas steps or Glasgow megasnake Perhaps i'm a tad touchy after a fucking horrendous couple of weeks but i feel the need to point out that the last time we played Toronto we did not play Helicon 1 and we did play Glasgow Megasnake. We only played 3 songs in total that we played the last time. SB Don't know if the setlist tonight in Toronto was at all a reaction to my bitching from last year, but I must say it was fucking A1 10/10 tonight Stuart Setlist: Long Way (waiting sooo long to hear this again so thanks very much) Travel is Dangerous Rano Pano Jim Morrison Death Rays Flies Mexican Grand Prix (this song needs the seizure inducing light show from last year!) Auto Rock (I am thrilled with the arrangement of this song now, so good) Ex-Cowboy Werewolf Like Herod Glasgow Megasnake --- Ratts (also love the way this song transitions from the 2nd part to the 3rd part now, excellent) We're No Here extended noise outro Thanks again for a great show.... Next time I need to hear Xmas steps though

Just rolled back into town... and have spent the last little bit getting all the photos from Sunday night @ the Metropolis online for you all. Keep in mind, I wasn't expecting to end up with a photo pass, so I didn't bring all my gear with me, but I think they came out pretty well regardless. see them all here: www.flickr.com/photos/tnaugler/sets/72157630198783962/I have videos of MGP and 2 Rights as well... those should be uploaded by morning.

Next time I need to hear Xmas steps though PLEASE tell me you weren't the yob shouting for that song all night long. Couldn't make it to the Pontiac show tonight, unfortunately. A little bit sad about that now, but I have a feeling when I see the setlist it's going to really twist the knife in my proverbial groin area. Really wanted to see 'Stop Coming To My House' and 'Stanley Kubrick' in Toronto. But can't complain, the setlist was very good.

Next time I need to hear Xmas steps though PLEASE tell me you weren't the yob shouting for that song all night long. There was a guy screaming for MFMK at the Montreal show, for like the first 2 songs. Finally Stuart said they weren't gonna play it, so he might as well shut it - and he did. Which was great, cause it was REALLY agitating.

Tiff, do you remember which song or songs John uses his new Gibson Les Paul on? Thanks.

He used it quite a lot actually... All I can tell you for sure, is that the photos were taken during the first 3 songs only. So he used it for at least that much.
The sound in the Metropolis was amazing as well. Out of the 3 times I've seen them now, this was probably the best it's sounded. I actually attempted to enjoy some of the show without earplugs, but gave in half way through. It was glorious.

Well I'm back from detroit with very little sleep. Don't have a full setlist as I'm awful with song titles but the printed list for the encore is going to be wrong. I looked at it after the show and they were supposed to play Rano Pano/2 Rights/Batcat but when they came out, there was some kind of equipment problem (it looked like a laptop issue probably) so they conferred and ended up playing (i think) Like Herod/Batcat. They ended the regular set with mogwai fear satan.
Out of the 6 or 7 times I've seen them this was probably my least favorite and I really can't put my finger on why. The setlist was fine, and the crowd was decent (somewhat small but enthusiastic and relatively quiet) although this time we got an asshole yelling for glasgow megasnake after each song. There was just something about the sound that wasn't quite as massive as it usually is and I don't know what. I think maybe the bass wasn't loud enough. Or maybe it was just strange acoustics as the room was very tall with an upstairs balcony that was entirely empty. Anyway, sound wasn't awful by any means and they were still better than most other bands just not quite as good as in the past. Actually just looked at that video tnaugler posted of MGP and unfortunately last night the vocals were nearly inaudible in comparison so maybe it was just a less than ideal sound mix.

Yeah I just read that! Glad they enjoyed it so much. And one thing we can agree on was that version of mogwai fear satan was absolutely crushing.
Oh, another very strange thing about the venue. There were so many lights around that it wasn't even dark out on the floor. Like, light enough that I could read the time on my digital watch throughout the show.
Hopefully I didn't come across too harsh or anything...I still loved the show and was well worth the 7 hours of driving, just didn't live up to my past mogwai experiences.

Next time I need to hear Xmas steps though PLEASE tell me you weren't the yob shouting for that song all night long. Certainly not! People yelling shit in between songs/during quiet parts is surely one of the lowest forms of behavior at a Mogwai show (or at any show really)....

Loving all these reviews, Tiff your pictures are great Thanks! I was glad to steal a few photos with John & Dominic (and Barry giving Dom rabbit ears) before we all left the bar that night. We must have sat there and talked for an hour or so. Such lovely guys.
