I'm probably the only one here who's not seen them live yet Trust me, it is an awesome experience! When you get a chance to see them grab it, you won't regret it

That's a great set. Did you see Barry said he really enjoyed it on twitter (and I got a daft reply when I asked why )

It was a great gig. So very loud. The loudest I have ever experienced. Was great seeing them in such a small venue. Will write better report later on. And I get to do it all again tonight!

My Review: I thought I'd do 2 separate reviews because I'm a nerd. First off is gig #1 - James Cabaret, Wellington (2015-03-06). The was the bands first trip to New Zealand since 1999 when they played in Auckland only and set a noise record at that venue (same venue as gig #2) of 131 db. I was expecting great things. I was quite excited to find out 2 hours beforehand that Mick Turner was supporting. This set the time in stone for heading to the gig as I have followed The Dirty Three for longer than I have followed Mogwai, but have never managed to see them live. Therefore I wasn't going to miss this opportunity to see 1/3 of the band. So headed in just before 8:30 with my mate who'd also traveled from our small town. The James Cabaret is a small venue, capacity of 750. It has a low ceiling which then raises up a little allowing a small mezzanine level. We perched ourselves right near the front, 3 people back from where Stuart and Dominic would be standing. As the ceiling was low, the PA essentially sits at head height. This becomes especially relevant as the gig starts. So right on time, Mick walks on stage with his drummer. I know it'll be instrumental, but he doesn't even have a microphone to say anything to the crowd with. Mick Turners set was spellbinding. His work on the D3 is understated, leaving Warren Ellis and Jim White the room to take over the stage. Solo, it's Mick's turn to shine. The number of loops he had going at various stages was amazing. I'm not a musician, but my buddy is and he was just obsessed with what Mick was doing and how he was doing it. I honestly felt I'd got my moneys worth from his set alone. So off Mick goes after a lengthy support slot - it was close to 50mins. As the Mogwai roadies get their stuff set up and start tuning the guitars and bass, one particularly loud tuning made my buddy lean over and say "They're not even going through the PA yet." Yet another prophetic statement. So Mogwai come on just before 10pm and launch into Heard About You Last Night. It's always slightly misleading, but sensible starting off with this track as comparatively, it's a lullaby. They then launch into Jim Morrison. This song was one of the highlights of seeing them last in 2009 as on the record it's quite subdued, but live it's utterly ferocious. It was also during this song that I decided that if I wanted to be able to hear for the rest of my life, I'd better put in my ear plugs. It was just unbelievably loud. I've already mentioned the low ceiling and how the PA is situated quite low, and being about 3m from the speakers, there was just no escaping this incredible volume. I've had to put my fingers in my ears during the feedback at the end of My Father My King before, but this was something at an entirely different level. I could feel the inner parts of my ears vibrating ferociously and it was quite a disconcerting feeling. So popped earplugs in and I felt much happier. Next up was Ex-Cowboy which seemed faster and shorter than the album version certainly. It's one of my all-time favourites but I would have liked it slowed down and drawn out - this is a live setting after all. Rano Pano and then The Lord Is Out Of Control followed it which are both solid songs. Rano Pano especially seems like great fun to play. The song that came on next was one of the highlights for me - Ithica. Why bother playing for 10+ mins, when you can create this amount of noise and destruction in under 3. I could have listened to it all night. Werewolf and White Noise up next, followed by Mexican Grand Prix. I'm not really a fan of this last song on the record, but I must admit it worked very well live. Next up, Deesh was the greatest surprise for me. My buddy said to me after this one that he was glad he didn't have tummy troubles or he might have had an accident. My whole body just shook during this song, with it generating the strangest sensations - not unpleasant, but I wouldn't have wanted it to have gone on for much longer either. I was excited that Remurdered was next - great song and it didn't disappoint. We're No Here as the last song of the main set was everything I expected, with the feedback outro being more subdued than I have heard them play before. So off the band trot for a short break before coming back. Stuart seemed in good spirits, but didn't say alot as expected. The loudest cheer of the night was reserved for the start of Hunted By A Freak, but I knew this meant it was likely we'd get Mogwai Fear Satan next, and that was what I waited for. And yes, as the segue was completed, I knew it'd be a great closer as always, especially with the volume and the smallness of the room. The kicker did not disappoint. Quite a few people around me jumped back when it hit. Not so much in surprise, but just because of the ferocity of it. The band wandered off after that with it taking ages for the house lights and music to start up which kept some of us interested for a wee while. It was only after the end that I realised that I was about a metre further back from the stage than when the gig had started. There hadn't been anyone go in front of us - the sheer volume of the gig had forced people to retreat ever so slightly from the speakers. Yep, it was a good gig. Here are some I've ripped off the web: www.offthetracks.co.nz/gig-review-mogwai-march-6-wgtn/willnotfade.wordpress.com/2015/03/07/mogwai-wellington-live-review/www.riotradio.co.nz/2015/03/sonic-mass-mogwai-give-wellington-a-glaswegian-kick-to-the-bollocks/This last one is the best and has a pic that shows the relative size of the stage nicely.

Looking at the list I wrote in February of my wishlist, I did ok over the weekend. I got 7 of the 15 songs. Gotta be happy with that!
here was my list..... Songs which would get me rather excited would be: Yes! I Am A Long Way From Home You Don't Know Jesus My Father My King Helicon 1 - DONE Ratts of the Capital Death Rays Ithica - DONE Fear Satan - DONE Ex-Cowboy - DONE Helicon 2 I Know You Are But What Am I Batcat - DONE Remurdered - DONE Like Herod We're No Here - DONE so those 15 songs spread over the 2 gigs with a smattering of the other regulars should be sufficient.

I haven't done a review for Auckland yet as I've been sick, but my buddy reminded me that about a third of the way through the Wellington show Stuart mouthed to his sound dude to make it "louder." Impressive considering one of the reviewers I linked to above had already left because it was just too loud, so while he was obviously a little bit of a girls blouse, Stuart asking for it to be turned up was just awesome! Same buddy is still experiencing ear issues a week after the gig has finished! He thinks it'll pass, but he doesn't care if it doesn't. He's been to hundreds of gigs, mostly in Birmingham in the 80's and 90's, and it was the loudest he'd been too. Beat Sonic Youth at The Hummingbird apparently. He's still buzzing - it was his first live Mogwai experience and he can't wait for the next tour!

Hee hee - I was at that Sonic Youth at the Hummingbird gig - the one in 1992 when Pavement supported?
Stuart's probably got worse hearing than most of us though, so maybe he needs it louder? ;-)

I booked tickets for the first Glasgow date (more in hope than anything else) but it turns out a Ryanair flight from Dublin to Glasgow is about €20 return which made it a no-brainer.
Since then I've booked Television in the Academy on June 12th and obviously I also have to go to the Olympia gig on the 18th. Could be a busy week...

Would love to see Loop too, not seen them (apart from festivals) since a show at Brum Irish Centre which was also a good advertisement for earplugs.
