Saw Mogwai last night at the Save The Children Concert at The Glasgow Armadillo....
John was conspicuous by his absence onstage, he was replaced by I think Scott Paterson, ex of Sons & Daughters. on guitar..... Few rumours circulating say John is no longer in the band.... Wondering if anyone else has heard anything or was last night just a one off.....

Rumours where? I would doubt it...say he just couldn't make it since it was a fairly recent addition

Damn! I hope not, I hadn't seen anything written anywhere and I kind of doubt they'd be in the studio right now if that were the case

Completely, too rubbish to contemplate. Hopefully it's just gossip

Completely, too rubbish to contemplate. Hopefully it's just gossip Maybe he'll do a Peter Hook and tour relentlessly with a pick-up band playing the darkest recesses of Mogwai's back catalogue. Or maybe it'll turn out to be totally unfounded gossip.

Also worth recalling that the band have occasionally played with a substitute drummer, when Martin was unwell.

Also worth recalling that the band have occasionally played with a substitute drummer, when Martin was unwell. And with a substitute John - David Jack, who was their guitar tech at the time, played a chunk of the Curiosa shows in 2004 after John got ill.

I'm guessing it's much ado about nothing, over on Facebook the Mogwai Fan page saw a bit of tension when someone didn't like a post suggesting / asking if John may have left the band, and asked for it to be deleted.
I thought I recognised the name, Kiko Loiacono, and I think he is the guy who speaks italian at the start of You're Lionel Ritchie, and is obviously a friend of the band - if he says it's not true, it would be fair to say that it's not.....

Ah bugger, have to say the absence of any reply from Stuart on here had me worried. Hope you're all OK fellas, and all the best for the future.
Me and the husband would usually opt to stand in front of John at gigs when we could. As I said up thread, can't imagine live shows without him but I'm happy to be proved wrong. :-(

Their silence the last week had me spooked... Sad news but he put in 20 amazing years. Very happy they are continuing on and am looking forward to hearing what John gets up to. Twenty more years

A sad day, but also a beginning.
Best wishes to both John and the rest of the guys, I'm confident that there will be lots of great music to come from both Mogwai and John's future projects.

Really sad to hear this. I hope it's all amicable.
I struggle to imagine Mogwai going forward from this, John is/was such an integral member and contributor, both on record and live.

This just destroyed my day! I was wondering why there was no follow up to all of the questions on here, I guess now we know why.
Makes me wonder if this was something that was discussed a while back and why the 20-year box set was released, maybe it was a sort of way for John to leave and have the band try to continue onward in a new chapter...don't know.

Good luck John with whatever you do in the future. I have always been a "Stuart's side" gig-goer but you have been an integral part of how our band actually sounds. Thank you.

Yeah I'm wondering just how different the next album will sound without him! Hoping it's not too different.

Most upsetting news…we just found out tonight and are still trying to wrap our heads around what seeing the boys minus John will be like. We've seen shows with David on guitar and James on drums and they did stellar jobs, but it was not the same as having the fab five up there. John will be sadly missed but we wish him every success in his future projects.

Yeah I'm wondering just how different the next album will sound without him! Hoping it's not too different. why? I'm hoping for something that is quite different - with or without John. Rave Tapes for me (and I could well be in the minority) was lacking in ideas and sounded like a band stuck in a rut. At the very least I'd like a change in producer. I agree with Stuart that the tracks on Rave Tapes sound a lot better and more fully formed live: noisey.vice.com/en_uk/blog/rank-your-records-mogwai-stuart-braithwaiteDoes anyone have a list of Mogwai songs that were predominantly written by John? I think San Pedro is for someone reason.
