Can anyone explain to me the pro's/con's of getting locking tuners? I have a standard Mexican Tele with all stock equipment. I have been kicking around the idea of both upgrading the bridge pickup and putting in stock tuners. My only problem is that I really don't know what the costs/benefits are for the tuners.
Also does anyone know around how much it would cost to have a guitar shop put them in?

Stock MIM Telecasters come with Ping-made (Korean company) tuners. Upgrading them to the ones used on US models, which look nearly identical (made for Fender by Schaller) or the locking ones (also by Schaller) isn't a horrible idea but they'll not likely make that much difference. My experience with the Ping-made ones has been quite positive. Most people who have tuning issues (don't know if that's your problem or not) should look at their nut more than the tuners. If you don't have specific problems with the tuners themselves, it's probably not too worthwhile. There is also some confusion about the word "locking" when it comes to tuners. This is because there are also "locking nuts" like many Floyd-Rose tremolos use, which lock the strings in place behind the nut so that string tension is maintained during whammy bar dives. Tuners are different - they are called "locking" because there is a mechanism in the top part which "locks" the end of the string into place, as opposed to traditional tuners which depend on the end of the string being looped around multiple winds of the string on the string post. Do your tuners look like these? If so, you could buy the Fender-branded tuners or the locking versions - they should be a straight drop-in replacement. You just unscrew the bolt on the top of the headstock and the tuner will pop out - there are two little "teeth" that hold them in place. The replacements ones have the same setup. Take a look here: www.guitarpartsresource.com/tuners_genuinefender.htmThese are the higher-end non-locking ones: And the locking ones come in chrome & brushed-chrome finishes: Good luck! Hi forum, I just saw mogwai at the Trocadero Theater, in Philadelphia, on April 25th. I noticed that Barry was playing a Gibson SG with a 'zebra' humbucker pickup in the tail position. Since zebra humbuckers are a generic term for all sorts of different brands/models, I was wondering if anyone, or if Barry sees this, knows what brand/model this pickup is, as it sounded quite wonderful at the concert.
Thanks, Nick

Ive been looking for a DD-20 for a while. Anyone know any decent second hand websites for this kind of gear? I have been looking dolphin and those sort of sites and I can seem to find anything for less than say 190? Even better is anyone looking to sell one?!

someone said recently to me that a lot of come on die young was recorded with a Zoom 505, any truth in that? That would be insane, a total "NO-NO" in terms of studio recording! But you know what... if that were true, then it might explain why alot of the guitar tracks on CODY sound very very dry and clean. I would say "a bit dull" but that sounds negative - as I think they sound fantastic in that context. Just like... there's very little chime to the main guitar on Helps Both Ways, it's a really dry signal... and sounds possibly direct from something like a Zoom box to the mixing desk (ie: not mic'ed through a guitar amp). It's certainly part of the mystique of that album. It has a really restrained feel to it. Who knows maybe there's a story behind it all, like Stuart blew a tube in his amp on some other song and since they were on the clock ($$,$$$) they decided to do some direct-to-desk recordings while the amp got fixed... or something. I dunno, I'm making shit up now ^__^

PS I *LOVE* Pro Co Rat pedals. I have an old one from the 80s. Brilliant stuff. It's great to now see that the Mog boys have upgraded their pedal boards with proper 'Pedal Power' supplies and high-qual patch cables between the effects etc. Maybe the guitar techs cottoned them onto it. You just can't tour the world with "5 for $8" multi colour patch cables anymore!

anyone know what settings their using on the Memory man? My guess, would be either, the loop setting or the 1 second Echo setting or the 1 second tap tempo setting because Stuart has the delay time turned all the way up and the feedback knob almost all the way up, and the decay knob all the way up. Withe the delay knob all the way up in the 3 second settings its not even musical how far apart the delays are from what you are playing, and I don't see that being useful at all in a live setting. In the 1 second echo setting, he could use the pedal for huge reverbed out run away delays, and in the 1 Sec Tap tempo setting with the decay knob all the way up the delays start soft and get progressively louder which i could see stuart liking. And in the loop setting those knobs just decide the volume/speed and direction of what you are playing, and he has it plugged in after his DD-20 so he could loop the delays off that, but the SMMWH can loop in any setting my guess based purely on owning one and listening to mogwai is he either uses, the 1 Sec Echo or 1 Sec Tap Tempo settings.

yeah, i tested out that setting on my Hazarai. Pretty interesting to use, but really a kinda noise drone sound. nothing comparable to the Boss DD-20. Though saying thati have achieved similar delays with the pedal. i still want to know more settings to be honest. specifically the dealy sounds from Scotlands shame. awesome! and no im not a noob, just been listeing to that album alot .

Also something I recently noticed while watching Burning clips: Stuart always has his Telecaster guitar set to the 'middle' position, which appears to be a Seymour Duncan "Lil' 59" single coil sized humbucker pickup. No stock Telecasters come with that configuration so it's definitely aftermarket installed (as already speculated). www.seymourduncan.com/products/electric/telecaster/cutting-edge/little_59_for_t/

Very cool clip, thanks!
Prob could have been a good 5 mins shorter if not for the awkward silent bits. John always strikes me as being quite shy, and this furthers that inclination. But that's ok, he's not shy while playing the guitar, that's for sure!
Very cool to see, and definitely answered some questions/suspicions I had about their gear and setup. Too bad he didn't go over the pedals, though that could be a whole other clip of it's own!

There seem to be a lot of MXR and Way Huge pedals scattered about... Dunlop sponsorship/ gift perhaps?
John and Stuart's pedalboards are both making me very jealous... very intrigued to try out the Way Huge stuff in person now given that John was so enthusiastic about how good it all sounds.
