What is everybody's opinion on Mogwai in concert? I personally believe that they are a better band live than their studio output. The two best examples are Summer and Helicon 1. They are far better live than their studio counterparts. I ask because I keep coming across people who aren't keen on seeing/hearing them live.

I think that they are excellent live but some of their songs just aren't as good without all the production (i.e. 2 Rights, Sine Wave, etc.) but like you said, some are much better live than the recorded versions.

it's definitely a different experience when they play live. it's louder and probably more intense. ex-cowboy is a favorite because it gets all apocalyptic nosiy.

I've only gotten to see them live once, with the amazing Part Chimp, and while it was an excellent show, the rest of the audience was really dead. Most of them had earplugs in, and cheered minimally for the band. I was also quite irritated with this thingy in a Radiohead t-shirt next to me complaining about how Part Chimp were too loud. Hopefully the next time Mogwai come around their fans that aren't girl thingys show up.

I personaly never heard "Mogwai fear Satan" live, but according to private recording, it's definitely not as powerful as the studio version. But I think it's nearly the only exception : almost every track gets a new personal sound when played live. The only time I saw Mogwai live, I was highly impressed by the religious silence in the audience at the beginning of "Xmas Steps", something you can never feel with any other band playing for 1000 persons. I was close to tears at that moment and I think I will keep that in mind for long...

Seen them 3 or 4 times now in Glasgow. Saying their better live shouldnt even be up for discussion. 2 rights make 1 wrong is far better live, last time I heard it was at ATP which was amazing because if I remember they had a flute for it this time.
Last show they played at Glasgow they ended with, Mogwai Fear Satan and My Father, My King with Christmas steps not too long before that. So much more hard hitting live, and the end of My father, my king was just white sound. Hearing the album versions dont do any song justice. Even Cody live sounds good coz of his wee reedy voice.

it was hard to tell how many people were enjoying mogwai as i was right at the front but they got a generous applause. I think shocked was the best way to describe the reaction of most of the crowed especially when satan kicked in, im sure two girls stood next to me shat themselves.
its funny you should ask about ratts as it seemed as there were a few sound issues,(it may have been due to earlier problems that occured during 2 rights) johns guitar appeared to drown out the rest of the band which wouldnt normally be much of an issue but seeing that most of the song he's playing the same few notes it was a shame to end the set this way.
it was still an amzing set though and just when i thought things couldnt get any better i met martin during the pixies set......which was nice!

Hellow, folks! Shoot, I just lost my whole post now I have to start all over and try and remember what I said! I was blessed to see Mogwai live recently at the Coachella Music and Arts Festival in Indio, near Palm Springs. They absolutely rocked. I had a backstage pass for ALL the bands that weekend (yes, I'm showing off, ha ha) and I got to watch them up on the stage; I could practically touch them! They put on quite a show, very intense. Plus we had a few drinks together at the bar and they truly are delightful fellows. Now, are they coming to play in Seattle, Washington, or am I merely dreaming? ;DTEXT

Not sure without going through the gigs again how many times I've seen them, easily into the 30s, but they just get better and better live. The sets are more varied and their musicianship has obviously improved as they've got older.

They're better live, the lights and the atmosphere just make them very unique and they always play the right songs it seems and the only ever band i've seen that are better are Oceansize (who oddly i spoke to after the Mogwai show, great minds and all that)

They surely are untouchable live...Watching Mogwai whilst on a pill is as good as music gets... Apparently.

Hi there,
Apologies if this ends up as a long post.....
Interesting to read other's views and of course, everyone is entitled to their opinion. I'd say that Mogwai's music is better live than in the studio although I personally believe that the venue and therefore atmosphere is critical to the experience.
I only really got into Mogwai last summer when I saw them at Strasbourg. That truly was a lifechanging experience and if you are interested you can read my review on bright light ! [Hi Rob!]
Having written this, I had earlier seen a short three track set at Chemikal Underground's 5th birthday party where they were competent, if nothing spectacular.
I've since seen Mogwai twice at Manchester & Treviso and neither has reached the same intensity as Strasbourg- the former suffering from that aircraft hangar that is the Academy and the latter, well just that the guys seemed a bit bored.
Also the fact that the sets and arrangements change nightly make them a 'must see' band if they happen to pass nearby.
Anyway, these are my views.
