35 mins and utterly, utterly fantastic "The Go! Team's sound could be described as somewhere between Sonic Youth, The Shangri-Las, Roxanne Shante and The French Connection going Double Dutch, or St Etienne meets The Avalanches - but that hardly covers the genre defying delights on "Thunder, Lightning, Strike". There's the trash punk northern soul of intro track "Panther Dash", New York lo-fi block party of "Bottle Rocket", lens flare TV movie epics of "Friendship Update" and "Everyone's A VIP To Someone". Recent single "The Power Is On" is a middle ground between the blazing trumpets of "Junior Kickstart" and the cheerleader cut and paste of "Ladyflash"."

1994 then - just dragged my Phoenix and Reading Festival programmes off the shelf to refresh my memory.
Sunday at Phoenix boasted a pretty incredible Melody Maker stage line-up - Shellac, Girls Against Boys, The Pastels, Bailterspace for starters. Other bands I can remember seeing that weekend include Drive Like Jehu, Stereolab, The Fall, The Wonder Stuff, Half Man Half Biscuit, The Blue Aeroplanes, Buzzcocks, Therapy? etc etc.
Reading the same year - Lemonheads, Pavement, Hole, Wedding Present, Sebadoh, Superchunk, Madder Rose, Tindersticks.
I'm guessing I was into lo-fi pretty heavily at that point...

thinking about getting it... worth it? what period lemonheads does it compare to(if any)? lemonheads favourites were lick & lovey - in particular their version of different drum by mike nesmith which i just adore. lost interest after "...shame about ray" but liked the couple of songs i've heard on the radio.

Yeah I like it a lot. I'm no Lemonheads expert, so I wouldn't trust myself to compare it to a particular album.

no, not really. the last track goes on a bit - not much singing either. l reckon a verse chorus verse structure is the way to go

forgotten how good this is! Fyfe Ewing - one of the best drummers I've ever seen play. They just were/are not the same after he left! A previous fave band...

Iain, if you're still wondering about Evan Dando, you should get this album: It's a live one he did before releasing his solo album, so is him performing Lemonheads songs (except for one or two, which are his new) but in the style of his solo album.
