philophobia pisses over all of them IMO. A master work in all respects. In order I would say (studio albums only and not compilations): philophobia the week never starts round here the red thread elephant shoe monday at the hug and pint Again always better live than on record. Seen them many, many times and they've always been great. Particularly fond memories of 2 gigs in particular - one when the first showing of the Guiness advert that The First Big Weekend was in was shown and there was a TV on stage with them and also one where they wore Sooty masks!!!

..whereas I'd plump for The Red Thread every time. Philophobia would be a close second, mind.

But Mr Strong, you're oh so wrong! But seriously, I think philophobia the week never starts round here the red thread are great albums, and the others are just ok...

yep, i'd have agreed with you, but repeated exposure to some of the elephant shoe tracks via live recordings has convinced me that it's probably better than 'the week...'

yep, I would have to say that 'the red thread' is their best, 'mad for sadness' is pretty great also.....Elephant Shoe benefits from repeated listens more than any other album I have heard... Hug and pint has bagpipes!!

yep, I would have to say that 'the red thread' is their best someone with taste and discernment then! Hug & Pint is, I think, their patchiest effort to date. It has some great tracks (mostyl in the first half of the record) but i doesn't hang together well. no-one's mentioned possibly their finest release - the FUKD ID ep - both tracks wonderful.

im pretty sure i got into arab starp before mogwai. steve lamacq played 'first big weekend' on the evening session (does anyone else miss lamacq and whiley?) went out searching for the ltd 7" couldnt find it anywhere so i bought the lp, absolutely brilliant. thanks to whoever started this thread cos i havent listened to them in ages think im gonna stick them on. subsequently picked upi the other albums - havent seen them live yet, theyre on my list!
after years of searching and many miles travelled searching for the elusive first big weekend 7" i managed to find it in my home towns local (and very very very very shite) recor fair!
1. week never starts 2. elephant shoe 3. philophobia

I got into arab strap before mogwai, thanks to Mark and Lard making the shy retirer single of the week which was the first time i heard them (good job i get into bands a lot quicker now)
I'd say the week never starts round here is far superior to the rest of the albums, it has anthems and classics on and every songs a winner (apart from the 2 annoying monologues by that other guy)
1. the week never starts round here 2. The Red Thread 3. philophobia 4. Elephant Shoe 5. Monday at the hug and pint (i bought it and played it about three times, disappointing)

i saw the video to "soaps" today and loved it. compared to mogwai, where do arab strap stand musically?

compared to mogwai, where do arab strap stand musically? aside from the obvious presence of vocals? not quite sure what you mean?

that's what i thought you meant.
i think 'r u still in 2 it' and 'now you're taken' act as a pretty good guide to their mid-period sound. 'the week never starts round here' doesn't have so much of the loud guitar, and they lost their long-term drummer and bassist prior to the last record, so it has a lighter, more acoustic edge.
