some of the live selections on the appendix disc to the young team remaster left me scratching my head a wee bit... why did you guys select an audience recording of katrien? it is a good version, but with the drops-outs and such, it seemed a little strange. i dare say that there is a paucity of good versions of katrien from back then.

Why live in the past Chocky? Classical music gets re-recorded by different orchestras and philharmonics from the originals. This would mean the Dandy Warhols would have to record Come On Die Young and I just don't see it sounding so hot. The Zidane OST doesn't have the same song re-recorded, it has a similar theme or motif or "bit" if you want. Completely different from what you have misunderstood here. Thanks. OK, so the Zidane stuff was a bad example. I really just want Summer and Helicon 2 (with the flute backing) redone . They regularly sound and sounded great live but the studio versions are relatively less impressive in my opinion. Go on, you could do it next time you're in the studio and stick them on a ltd ed 7". I have it all worked out.

That's a bit of a nosey/rude question though. I wouldn't even ask some of my closest friends what they make in a year so why would you ask someone that you don't even know? maybe it was a little nosey, but you could always chose not to answer it. just with it being something that i don't understand at all, i was curious tis'all. if you're interested barry, i could tell you what i earn as a mine geologist in a gold mine in new zealand? yeah, thought not.

On the way to the show our van broke down and we got a lift in a police car and in a truck with a guy with loads of guns. I got really drunk at the show and had alcohol poisoning and puked in every state we drove through on the 20 hour journey, especially after seeing a poster for new burger king product called a "big cheesey". Barry missed this the lucky bastard. The version of Satan is pretty good and i liked Herod too as its almost funky (by our standards). BTW i AM rich, seriously rich. Just don't tell the other 4 as i have thus far hidden my jewel encrusted lavish lifestyle from them for fear of them inspecting the books and realizing that 95% of our income goes to me. SB

The netherlands are a monster team this year for sure. That third goal against france is still one of the greatest I have seen in my life. Barry, if you're getting into the seated-venue vibe , have you ever considered going on the road with a more mellow set list? I for one would love (nay, kill!) to hear the rest of EP live, for example.

Netherlands are crap. And winning against France was nothing more than easy as france was and is painfully bad! Would be great guys to think of a soundtrack for the french team's funerals...We are no here? Domenech will be skeleton? Yes I am a long way from the goalkeeper, Footballer I'm not, mogwai fear Thierry Henry...

Listening to this live recording at the Gothic Theater is making me wonder, have you guys ever considered doing a live DVD? thom, not answering your question, which i obviously can't, but just in case you were curious....... there's a few snippets of different live shows out there, with a track or so, most notably from festivals such as Fuji Rock, but the only full set pro-shot one that i know of is from Route Du Rock Festival in 2001. set is: 1. Sine Wave 4.08 2. Christmas Steps 8.48 3. You Don't Know Jesus 6.09 4. New Paths to Helicon 1 7.57 5. Two Rights Make One Wrong 10.03 6. My Father My King 18.50 a few tracks have been uploaded to youtube: tho all the videos there are out of synch cause the original uploaded video had a bad synch problem. forensic did a fantastic job of synching up the audio with the video and made it available on dimeadozen.org here: www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=166240

You seem to have taken to answering questions with gusto, Stuart! I was wondering what the story behind the Ithica tuning was? Who wrote it? Has it been used for any other songs before/since Ithica? I'd love to hear the answer to this one ;D I've noticed that you seem to play Ithica in different tunings at different times. Also, i'm wondering if you guys had any creative input on the Fountain soundtrack or were you just adding to Mansell's songs?

Is this turning into the new Q and A? I fancy a bit of that for a while. I think we can all be quite mature about it these days. Am I right dickheads? As long as those backwoods charmers the Chunklickin' Boys are kept under control this time. Then again - let 'em loose, we can reply this time.

This would mean the Dandy Warhols would have to record Come On Die Young and I just don't see it sounding so hot. I can't see Mogwai pulling off Bohemian Like You either. I'd pay good money to see you try though.

i liked Herod too as its almost funky (by our standards). Yes! The first time I put it on, I had a little dance round the kitchen, then did a double take at what I was dancing to.

It's a loaded question or maybe just a loaded answer. I have no idea if that's me playing on that tune. Was not fun.

How much you guys are involved in any other forms of art?? I mean apart music is there any other art you really love ou would love to do? Paintings, engraving? printmaking?...Visual art... I think that there are a lot of connections between your music and printmaking for example. The idea of layers...You play and add then so many layers of sound, delay, distortion etc...As you do in printmaking when you combine techniques: digital base, then, screenprinting, etching... You will see as you will come to see my work in king street for the opening! Have you ever thought of working with images and music?

It was on purpose. Its not something we do now but i don't regret it. Our booking agent said during the Rock Action tour that he was worried about whether people would come back and see us after we inflicted them with noise and i remember saying that it didn't do MBV any harm (he books them too). We asked the guy doing our sound on that tour to make it as loud as possible and even though it was really irresponsible it was what we were about at the time. For the record the loudest 2 bands i've ever seen were Throbbing Gristle and Pan Sonic. I love loud music! SB this is good to know. i actually have a couple friends that kind of got a little less interested because of the loudness (after going to shows in 99/01), so maybe i can convince them to show up again. the 2002 tour was also really loud (well, at least that baltimore show @ the ottobar was). i noticed also that the shows didn't seem as loud, but i was also starting to question a bit how much i might have already damaged my hearing. the whirlyball shows were really loud, but i think a lot of that was related to the size of the room. i think the loudest show i ever experienced was atari teenage riot. i think my ears rang for three days? re: the loud 01 tour, i ended up running into ajay a few years back doing sound for dinosaur jr. i'm not sure why that surprised me, but he was really nice and we talked about mogwai and he hooked me up with one of the setlists ... then a couple nights later when i saw him again at another dinosaur jr show, he made copies of the setlist and gave them out to the 4-5 of us that were taping the show. and in response to another post later in the thread re: dvd submitted footage: sorry if my footage was not so great. my camera kind of sucked and it was my first time really filming any shows. i think i did better with the 06 shows and such. i still need to finish editing all that stuff. i am entirely to slack and unmotivated these days. and now an actual question: did you guys enjoy the whirlyball shows? would you guys want to do any shows in that kind of atmosphere again? as someone in the audience it was cool to see shows that small again and also to see some bands in a slightly different atmosphere. oh, and one more question: stuart, i was talking to you at the pittsburgh show in 04 and some guy came up and started talking to you about doing a joy division cover for some sort of soundtrack or compilation or something? did anything ever come of that?

What is being said during the MYT version of Katrien? It's one of my favourite tracks and it's superbly balanced to tease and let the odd word or sentence through. Who is it talking? What about? All I get is: "see and hear everything simultaneously" and " how did you know?" Go on, spill. According to Martin Bulloch: "the bit in katrien is brendan o'hare talking shite about yeti's or something like that, don't ask me why." Anything else? It sounds more interesting than yetis. Also, the live version on the reissue appendix disc is awesome. I hope you play it live at the Hammersmith Apollo seeing as you'll be getting practice with the MYT gigs. Oh, that reminds me, any plans to do some non festival MYT performances, say in London maybe? I'm sorry Barry if my questions are nearly always about the early stuff. I just think Mogwai were better before you joined.

Oh that's nice, thanks very much dad. Just remember before I joined Mogwai were playing places like Colchester and Chelmsford and now we're not getting out of bed for less than £60,000. Be-Otch. ;-P Imagine what I'm going to look like when we do that MYT show in Spain. Probably very drunk looking and sad. Maybe crying. Every tear worth a small fortune though. x

Hello chaps, cheers for doing a bit of Q&A again. After seeing you 3 times in 2006 (ICA, Cambs Junction, RAH) it seemed that at every gig, the volume seemed to increase fairly dramatically towards the end of the set. I especially remember MFMK at the Albert Hall being almost twice as loud as Xmas steps opening was. Was that a conscious decision by yourselves or maybe your soundman just doing it for sheer 'what the hell' Either way, I still maintain Brixton 2001 to be the Loudest fucking thing I ever did see. Congrats!
