Hello everyone
Has anybody noticed any problems with sound quality of the new album? It's a cracking good album, but it sounds slightly dull. It's as if it has been badly mastered, or I am listening to a leaked bootleg copy.
It's the UK CD&DVD version I have, and it's not just my ears failing me. My girlfriend agrees with me, and so do the few people I have pointed it out too. Non of my friends are clever enough to be Mogwai fans, so I can't compare their copies.
The difference is most noticeable when switching straight to another CD after The Hawk Is Howling. Have there been any reports of bad batches?
Cheers, mental.

it does seem to be mastered quite quietly compared to other albums. is that what you're meaning?

it does seem to be mastered quite quietly compared to other albums. ooh, is it? I'd assumed it'd be all loud like Mr Beast and haven't got round to buying it yet. I might pick up a copy tomorrow and report back with my thoughts.

I just downloaded a copy of both the UK and Japanese version of the album (is it illegal if I have already bought it?). Having mp3'd my own original, I can't hear any difference in quality between the different versions. This would indicate to me that all copies of the album sound like this, and that it was something at the mastering stage rather than some bad pressings. Who knows? I am glad it is not just me that has noticed it though. Looking forward to hearing other people's views.

huh... so i'm not crazy. I noticed this when i played the album in the car... at first i thought it was the car stereo being a crap heap. Then i thought that maybe it was because it was a downloaded version. When i got my hands on the disk, i still noticed it but never gave it too much thought.
Good to know i'm not out of my mind:)
Anyone here own the album on vinyl? I'm wondering if the sound quality is any better...

I bought the CD + DVD version, and it sounds great. What are you listening to it on? Computer speakers/mp3 players and mp3's in general seem to take a lot of quality off of a recording.
Remember in the past everyone tried to get the biggest, coolest, best and loudest sound systems? Have you noticed these days sound systems are getting smaller and smaller (and therefore crudder) and that's what's getting cool to own? Good for storage space, shi*e for sound.
In short, the best sound you'll get is from the original CD, and on a decent stereo.

Agreed the sound is a little flat. For mine Rock Action and EP+6 are the best sounding Mogwai records here at home.

I don't think it sounds flat at all, it's just mastered a bit lower and therefore not as compressed than Mr. Beast for example.

Well the midrange seems a little dull to me. Not as bad as some other recordings out there (I'm thinking of Loveless by My Bloody Valentine and Lift your skinny fists by Godspeed) but EP+6 in particular sounds far more dynamic. Despite this the album itself is great.

How does the 2013 repress sound compared to the original 2008 2xLP version? Anyone have both?
