Hi There,
No leak again on the net... it's a little bit strange!

Ryan - the whole thing, taxes and shipping in, came to $118.65. <Gulp> Well, thanks for the info, I'll probably have to hope the packaging on the regular LP release (for 80% less) is somewhat comparable. Or if the photos in the book are really exceptional I can grab a box later, I usually see them show up in stores, but well after the release. I can see how the book would appeal to those who are into photography, though. The LP packaging from 'Hardcore...' remains one of my favourites ever, love those NYC/Hudson River photos, total class.

Yea it's a bit steep, but considering all that's in it, I think its more than worth it:)
I actually convinced the other half that he should get it for me as my Xmas & birthday presents. Considering I'm taking him to Montreal to see Godspeed & Neurosis in January, I think it's a decent trade. Lol.

"The Lord is Out of Control" is a an excellent track, just wanted to put that out there! Would love to see that one being played live.

So, what's the deal with the cassette version? I really like it and can't afford the box set! Is it available somewhere? Is it even in the box set?

Blues Hour reminds me more of Quiet Stereo Dee than Cody as slacker345 claimed it was a spitting image of, in fact i'm not hearing Cody in it at all.

Blue Hour reminds me of Hugh Dallas if anything...

So Blues Hour sounds like Mogwai used to sound 15 years ago. They haven't done that for a while?

Already after 4 listens I really like it...really strong songs throughout with only a couple that need a little more time (but thats always the way)- looking forward to my boxset arriving
'Repelish' is one of the best things they done in years and the studio version of 'Blues Hour' is epic (agree with the Hugh Dallas thing- love that song). 'Deesh' and 'No Medicine' are growing on me fast... 8 albums in and still delivering the goods...

i found a rare leak on soul seek, very poor quality (160kbps). After 5 listens:
Epic: Blues Hour and Deesh
Very good: Heard About you last night, Hexon Bogon, Master Card, Lord is out of control.
In my opinion this is a very good album, there is a good mix of analog synth and guitars. It sounds a little bit different then their previous works....i'm waiting for the box to play it on my Hi-Fi!!!

The person who leaked it through Soulseek in the first place was using the handle "xxoxxooxoo" and was only sharing this album and nothing else which was kinda weird.
I like the overall sound and feel of the album, i agree about Repelish aswell - cool tune. Also 'No Medicine For Regret' is really beautiful. I'm gonna try not listening to the rip anymore though because of the low quality and i want to fully enjoy spinning the vinyl when the box arrives.

Wow - a very very nice album. It feels like the band has a ton of new ideas these days. I think this might be the least dynamic album they have put out - other than the the burst in blues hour, no real noisy bits. Even Hexon Bogon is relatively restrained.
Speaking of blues hour, wow it's so much better than the live recordings. Same with Heard about you last night. MasterCard, on the other hand, feels a bit muddy on the album - I think I prefer the live recording.
No medicine for regret - excellent. Not sure i feel the same about repelish as everyone else - it feels like a bit of a throw away track to me.
Can't wait to heard these songs live!

All good observations. I agree with the thoughts on Master Card - I love how in the live bootleg and Dingle version that distorted piano is a more prominent element. Repelish cracks me up every time. I love the music, but the samples are just rediculous (as in I appreciate the band's dark humor at play here). I think this is going to be a Mogwai album that doesn't show all of its cards at once, and that over time different things will start to come out if it. And then, as I think we're already hearing, the live versions will take on a form if their own.
I too can't wait to get my box set, to a: hear this in hi-fidelity and b: pour over the beautiful packaging. This might be one of the best LOOKING Mogwai records ever.

Yeah MasterCard seems to be missing the piano melody in parts compared to live versions- sounds like Barry burns was a busy man on this record- 'synth action' (or 'mr burns') I'll get my coat

Just finished listening to it for the first time (thank you for sleeping on my shift, Miyako chan!!). What a great record. Very happy, looking forward to picking up the LP. Actually hearing the song with the Zeppelin-Satan tape really brings home just how out to lunch early review guy is. He laments that they don`t use background samples the way they used to, but it couldn`t be more obvious that they`re trying to do something a bit different with it this time (the higher volume, putting some of it in time with the music). Like it or don`t, but don`t complain that they`re not doing the same thing they`ve done before many times. But of course, I am a bit of a fanboy, admittedly. soulseek still exists?!?!?!? I always laugh when I see things like this. Slsk hasn`t changed a bit in maybe 10 years or so. I guess lots of people moved on to other things for whatever reason, but it`s still exactly the same, still very useful. Not sure if you can get full-length Hollywood blockbusters on it or anything, but it fills my needs more than adequately.

"Blues hour" reminds me a little bit of Telstar Ponies, such an amazing song, one of my favourites of all time from mogwai

Haven't done a download yet, can't decide whether to or not, Are there some decent quality copies around yet? Can I hold out til our box set arrives given that I want to be familiar with new stuff prior to the RFH on 24th jan... (A month!)
Anyway, was just listening to The Lord is out of control whilst making the nut roast for tomorrow and thought Stuart would approve :-)

Not sure if you can get full-length Hollywood blockbusters on it or anything, but it fills my needs more than adequately. Indeed - I switched to torrents. By the way there is a 320kbps leak on torrents. (Disclaimer - my copy of the album is already pre-ordered! ) I really love the first two and last two songs on this album, and to be honest it's hard to fault a single song here, although I keep hoping for something more from Hexon Bogon. (speed? intensity?) It really seems like the band worked very hard on this one banging together a lot of new ideas. And is it just me or is Martin's drumming really cranked up about three notches in terms of complexity? I had a thought that two songs from Hawk is Howling (Sun Smells Too Loud and Danphe and the Brain) would fit very well on this album. For whatever reason they were never played live, so I'm wondering (all right, hoping) if we might see either of them on upcoming setlists. If pitchfork doesn't like this one they can go fuck themselves

Pitchfork will call it "boring" and give it a 4.7 or something. They usually give higher ratings for more direct and "fun" Mogwai albums (doing that since Young Team and Cody) and Rave Tapes ain't that.
About the album: I don't like the opening duo that much tbh. The opening track reminds me a bit too much of Jim Morrison and the second track is kinda there, same thing for Hexon Bogon that doesn't leave any lasting impression so far. Digging everything else though, just like Hawk the back half seems to be stronger. Especially digging the last 2 tracks, No Medicine for Regret may be my favorite but I reckon that's also the kind of track that will "a bit boring" for everyone expecting a lot of big, obvious climaxes. I dunno how it'll hold up but I like what I'm hearing so far and it seems they're trying to make a statement again after Hardcore which was well made but a bit too predictable and all over the place "so yeah, here's 10 more Mogwai songs!" for me.

Heard About you last night is a little bit different then J.M. It is a slow dreaming synth melody with a bit of jazzy guitar.... I heard J.m as a epic song with a muscolar telecaster at its end. In my opinion Hexon Bogon is the best guitar work on the album...unfurtunately is too short. Pitchfork.....ahhhhh.... pitchfork loves hipsters and pop music anda culture... Marco

well im not a regular in this board, but here's my 2 cents. after lots of plays since friday night that i found the leak, i must say i love it. i didnt care much for hwndbyw, and remurdered left me with mixed feelings. im glad to find out that it works so well in context. im a big fan of the soundtrack works of mogwai, and to my ears rave tapes sounds very close with that albums. i also get a cody feeling with all these low-to-mid tempo songs. i really cant pick favorites. this albums sounds to me extremely well composed and written. anyway, now i have to wait for the box to blast the vinyls.
