What would constitute a "Bold Step Forward" for a band making music continuously for almost 20 years? Can you give me some examples of other bands that have achieved something similar? Swans, Radiohead, Autechre, The Flaming Lips, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, MBV (Not continuous I appreciate!), Coil... Radio head made a quantum leap with Kid A - thier 4th album (thier 3rd if you don't count the first one, which even the band doesnt :-) )Since then they have been iterating the same way Mogwai has. I can't tell one Autechre album from another - no progression at all IMO. The new MBV album, while awesome, is hardly different than previous albums. Flaming Lips are a pretty good example - cant speak to the others.

Personally I find Radiohead dull beyond belief. It distresses me greatly that their name is being dragged into a discussion here - so far we've managed to keep this board a pretty much Radiohead-free zone. If this sort of poor behaviour continues, I shall have to start banning people.

I dunno- I think had Mogwai gone on an extended hiatus we'd be without some really fantastic records. Rave tapes might not be everyone's cup of tea (I myself think its great) but they are exploring new territories with the instruments that suit them best...Remurdered/Repelish/Deesh are (in my opinion) clear signs of a band moving forwards and not looking back. I've read most of the reviews and the few negative ones all seem to want them to make a 'young team' again- that'd be shite!

Contacted Sandbag about my box which according to my account page was still processing. This is the response... Ok, your order has not shipped as yet. I'm concerned there may be an issue with stock availability - I will need to speak with our warehouse team.. How could there be a stock problem when i ordered in October?

I ordered mine from a certain UK online retailer back in October, got a message on Friday evening that they hadnt calculated the shipping correctly and I'd have to pay 10 pounds more to get it shipped. Still waiting for it...

I've just noticed the back of the box says that it includes the cassette version - did anybody else receive it? just PM'd you but yes, if it's the Rock Action one you've bought then you should have got a cassette. Received! Thanks.

Got an emailed response saying that it has been dispatched today. I was a bit concerned, cos i'd also managed to get a reasonable p&p cost & was afraid they'd try to bump it up...I won't get too excited until it arrives safely!

On my first play now. "Heard About You Last Night" and "Remurdered" hit the spot right away. Not so taken with "Simon Ferocious" yet, though.
Will be sending my scratched LP back for a replacement.

Liking "Blues Hour" and "No Medicine For Regret", and "The Lord Is Out Of Control" ends the album nicely. The other tracks will need a few more listens.

Sandbag have sent me 22 identical emails today thanking me for my custom in ordering the box set. Seriously, one would have been fine.

I got a message from Sub Pop today telling me that mine was on the way. I tracked it and it's still sitting in Washington, so I won't be getting it till most likely, the end of next week.
Kinda bummed about not getting the cassette version in the NA set, but... I'll live. The photo book is what I'm after!

I reckon I'm around my 20th play of the album and the individual tracks are really starting to cut through now. Upgrading from 320 mp3s to the CD, the difference is striking - brighter/clearer, individual instruments stand out more. Very glad to hear this, I stopped listening to the leak after a few times. Mogwai are a band that to me absolutely needs good sound.... listening to it on my iPod wasn't quite cutting it. And I found that 'Hardcore...' was actually a pretty good sounding record, which wasn't always the case in the past. The only question is whether to just grab the regular LP when I'm downtown next, or to hold out for the box later on when I go see it in a shop or at a show. The crux is what exactly is contained in the photo book. Can anyone describe it for me? Photos of a band in the studio aren't something that immediately appeals to me, but everyone here seems to like it a lot, so I'm curious. I guess I'd like to be convinced it's worth the extra outlay.

My box set just arrived the 20 january. The package is amazing...MONSTER BOX. I don't like the Lp art so much...it's litlle bit kitsch...the Box art is better. Unfortunately i could hear the cd on my Hi-Fi only one time. I need others quality listening but I feel that it is a delicious nocturnal album, It seems very close to "Valtari" by Sigur Ros. Apart "Heard About.." and "Simon Ferocius" i'm not involved with the first 6 tracks instead the last 4, from "Deesh" to "The Lord is out of control" are VERY good (8+). It's not aN epic album but it has very good steps in others ways and shoes. The extra songs are quietly nice...though i was hoping for another great bonus track like "Music for a Forgotten Future". The Photo Book is good....fine photos and amazing Stuart's Big Smile.

I agree that Stuart's big smile is brilliant!!
The box set is very nice. For some reason the CD doesn't have track names on my car stereo like most other CDs which is a very minor irritation.
I'm definitely warming to the album though, and I'm looking forward to Remurdered, Haxon and MasterCard live.

Played the vinyls this morning. Really enjoyed "Tell Everybody That I Love Them" - reminds me of "Black Spider". "Bad Magician 3" is very good, too. "Die 1 Dislike!" needs another few chances.

I think it's all about the last 3 tracks (and Remurdered) to be honest. They should stop putting the best tracks at the end cause a lot of reviewers for the ADD generation have dozed off at that point. Same thing happened to Hawk.

I was wondering about the white board list too. I'm guessing Hymnal = The Lord is Out of Control but other than that...
ETA: "Hymnal" - I meant Chapel

Anyone else's cassette sounding odd? Tried it on my player and only one side was coming out and it skowly warps every rotation... Tried other tapes on the system and they are grand. Hrmmm

A Mogwai record in the top 10 album chart, never thought I'd see that if I'm honest.
