any fans here? i've been recently listening like crazy to all the records i have of them. trent reznor is definitely a talented musician that never ceases to amaze me. i became a fan back in 94 when i saw march of the pigs on mtv. i bought the downward spiral directly after and that was weird record at the moment. it stands out as one of the best records of the 90's to me. i'd just want to share some good news. first, there's a dvd compilation released this fall called "closure". it was released on vhs back in 97 and features live perfomances, backstage stuff and videos. the dvd version is updated with stuff from "the fragile" era (1999-2000). i'm very excited about this release. watch the teaser for the closure dvd here (quicktime only) there's also a "the downward spiral" deluxe edition coming out in the fall, a two disc package, remastered, remixed in 5.1 and more. there's a lot information about the new album over at www.nin.com, there's a f.a.q. section, videos etc.

i used to like nin a long time ago. i did a lot of tape trading and had 50+ shows (all analog, though) back by 1995 (subsequently gave them all away eventually), but i must say i got really bored with them quickly.
my thoughts: 1) better live (mostly) than in studio (some songs just did NOT translate well live, as is the case with many bands) 2) i couldn't get over trents whiny lyrics and singing 3) song structures were quite formulaic 4) musically i find them interesting, though they're definitely not even close to groundbreaking.
i got rid of everything except the further down the spiral cds (because of the aphex twin tracks -- once i buy 26 mixes for cash i can get rid of those too) and broken/pretty hate machine (still sealed) on vinyl.
i'd never buy another nin album or go see them (unless they happened to be at a festival i was going to or something). though if trent put out an instrumental album, i would probably be interested in checking it out/buying it -- a normal nin album, no way.
i also think that 5 years (or more) between albums is a ridiculous amount of time considering what you're getting on those albums.
there's way worse music out there that has been made in the time that nin has been around, but i feel like nin (trent) gets too much credit.

loved pretty hate machine at the time it came out - still love 'sin' and not much else. always thought that they stole, somewhat undeservedly, ministry's thunder. rob & myself saw them at goldwyn's, a tiny little venue in birmingham (now gone) on the PHM tour when Mr Reznor was famed for throwing water of electrical equipment & electrocuting the band! a good show but a downward spiral since... they played a fine queen cover if my memory serves me correctly and i also seem to remember the queue for tickets outside being one of the longest i have ever seen.

Mr Reznor was famed for throwing water of electrical equipment & electrocuting the band! you and rob have seen a lot of concerts! have you even seen nirvana by any chance? yes, that's probably his way of punishing the band members if they played badly. i remember watching their performance from woodstock 94 on tv when he smashed three synthesizers, one guitar and a hell a lot of other stuff. sorry, i have a fetish for that kind of stuff. ;D

you and rob have seen a lot of concerts! have you even seen nirvana by any chance? yeah, twice. once when bleach came out & then on the day that they did top of the pops... great first time, shite the next as mr cobain was so hammered he kept lying down and they didn't play long enough. i must admit i preferred mudhoney when they were at the peak of their powers as a live band. seen them about a dozen times...
