Im pretty fond of the soundtrack to the duff remake of 'Solaris' by Cliff Martinez. I also think the Warren Ellis/ Nick Cave soundtracks for 'The Proposition' and 'The Assasination of Jessie James' are pretty good too.

My vote would go to "Control", though as it has a rock music theme, it maybe doesn't count.
Otherwise it would be "The Wicker Man"; original of course. The remake didn't last more than 10 minutes in my machine.
Cheers

I was quite taken by the soundtrack album for "Ghosts of the Civil Dead" by Nick Cave and others, but I haven't heard it in a while.
And "Zidane" is mighty fine, of course!
Otherwise, I'm not really one for V/A soundtracks, I'm afraid.
I also recall hearing a couple of the original recordings of the Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies music (without the voice-overs and other effects), which were composed by Carl Stalling. I think John Zorn released an album of some of them a few years ago. It was incredibly compliacted music, what with all the sudden changes in key and time signatures, and it must have been hell for the orchestra to play. A fascinating experience, though.

I only heard them when I saw the two films, but brokeback mountain and the assasination of jesse james are two I remember quite fondly.

as far as V/A ones go, i think Pi is great. a few mansell originals and some great tunes from aphex and autechre.
just happened to have finished watching Ghost Dog - Way Of The Samurai and think the score by RZA is very good also.

I think Out of Sight is the pick of David Holmes soundtrack work. Works well as a standalone album, as well as adding to the film. I would have to say the Blues Brothers too - and not just the album; introduced me to a heck of a lot of classic soul and blues at a time when motown was producing radio friendly synthesised dross.

Watched Let The Right One In the other day and that had a great soundtrack by Johan Soderqvist. It worked so well with the film, which was also great. Tracking down other works by him too, which seems to be a lot of OST's.
