I thought the setlist was good, and I agree with the sentiments about people talking.
Just as they came on stage some huge bloke asked if he could go in front of me cos his mate was there and I just said "No way mate, you're fucking massive" and gave him a look and he backed down!

Well thats my last ever gig at Brixton Academy, Sonic Youth, Pavement and now Mogwai ruined by a handful of idiots and a venue that seemingly attracts them. I had a great vantage point for a change there, dead central about 12 feet infront of the mixing desk and chatting was minimal however you cannot avoid the yobs who feel that shouting dumb comments about Celtic or reminding the band of their name mid song is a great idea. Totally distracting and pointless. Wish every London Mogwai gig could be like the Royal Festival Hall one. I may have been mistaken but it appeared as though someone shouted a remark towards Luke Sutherland and possibly threw something at him after Christmas Steps. Barry did seem upset about something and made a gesture suggesting for security to keep an eye on the section of the crown infront of John. Given what I thought I had seen I was completely distracted and disgusted after this. Great to hear my holy trilogy though (helicon, 2 rights and satan) and Jim Morrison has evolved into a behemoth! Highlight of the new material is Grand Prix - at last a Mogwai tune you can dance to!!! The one thing I took away from the night was James from The Twilight Sad. The jury is still out on them, although I did enjoy their set but this man is a star, truly inspiring performance from a genuine frontman.

I was at the Brixton show and thought it was great. OK there was chatter but I've waited two years to see the boys and I reckon last night was worth waiting for. I'd love to go back to the small gigs and the blistering intensity of ten years ago but Mogwai are getting bigger and who can begrudge them Enjoyed the new tracks alot and the choices from the back catalogue were hard to fault Anyway I sneaked a few films, the visuals aren't great (it's a Mogwai gig FFS but the sound quality is not bad 2 Rights Helicon 1 Werewolf (part only)

Yeah someone throw (I think a bottle) and it hits Luke's violin and Barry seems pissed off man. I was standing at the first post at the front and when batcat started a mosh pit append, thats why Stuart came over to the middle to stop it, what were his bad words, I didn't hear any?

If I'd heard 'remarks' about Luke Sutherland, I'd quite happily have been thrown out for punching whoever said it full in the face. I think it's London gigs. I remember hearing a lot of derogatary comments about Aidan Moffat when he guested at Somerset House, things that I wouldn't repeat, and if I'd been near the people that were shouting them then I'd certainly have waded in. It is embarrassing how such a good band can attract such a selection of moronic fans. On the happier side, the Leeds crowd were perfect - check out the CODY video on youtube for how quiet everyone was.

In some ways, I'm glad to hear it's London crowds rather than the fact that twats turn up to all Mogwai gigs regularly. I stood behind three city boys (which makes it sound like I have something against everyone who works in the City...I don't - I'm just trying to convey their mentality) who felt the need to start smoking two songs in and talking through the quiet bits/the songs they didn't know (so quite a lot). One of them started bouncing up and down and saying to his chum on either side 'BEST SONG EVER WRITTEN! BEST SONG EVER WRITTEN!' about five times each throughout the song that he thought was the best ever written, which I found a little bemusing. By the time we got about half way through and they were still talking, I said 'sorry - will you be talking all the way through?' and was rewarded with a look that said I was like something they'd trodden in and then lots of hilARious jokes such as 'ssshh, ssshhh!' every two minutes and, when Stuart started speaking, 'LOOK! HE'S SPEAKING! TELL HIM TO BE QUIET!' as well as general intimidation and aggression - not particularly okay from three men to a woman.
Anyway, the band were awesome. I really liked the screen and the films, though I think the cartoon Batcat should be a staple. Thinking of Batcat, it was immense! I'm afraid I don't know most of the songs from Hardcore by name, but I enjoyed them a lot too. Also, 2 Rights is always more than welcome.
I enjoyed the Twilight Sad too; I don't normally turn up for supports, but someone put Cold Days from the Birdhouse on a mix for me a few years ago and I've been meaning to catch them since then. I'll definitely be investigating further.

As much as I love seeing Mogwai live, the Brixton show was not one of my favourite performances, although the new material was very good live. Can we have a several night performance at the QEH or RAH please? if only edit: after reading the next post, reminded me of Batcat @ brixton. Why was Stuart so pissed off with a member of the crowd during the song? I was further back so couldn't see what was going on really, just a flashlight n pointing.

I find it really depressing that you felt intimidated by blokes, and there seems to have been disgusting remarks made about Luke Sutherland at a Mogwai show. Makes me really sad to be honest that that sort of thing would happen at any concert, let alone one by a band such as Mogwai. Maybe it's time that bands such as Mogwai started being a bit more vocal from the stage about stuff like this, although from what I've read here it sounds that they were at the Bristol show.

It's crazy, isn't it? Fortunately, I think being a teacher has made me more able to withstand such intimidation, and I was with a friend, but what if I wasn't? I felt it was truly disgusting behaviour...they were using their physicality to try and literally belittle me, which is just not acceptable. I was at a gig about five years ago in which a group of men decided to manhandle me and I was on my own then, and though they stopped when I turned round and told them to, I was really nervous as to what I could do if they didn't, or if they waited for me outside the venue.
As you say, it's sad that such things happen, let alone at a Mogwai gig, where you really don't expect it. I didn't catch what happened in Bristol...I'll go back a page or two and have a look. The apparent abuse of Luke Sutherland is insane.
I wonder what made the QEH and RAH gigs so much nicer. A Friday crowd never helps, so perhaps that was another factor in the cuntiness at Brixton.

It's one of those things really, you will by the law of averages get a certain percentage of wankers at gigs, when it's a weekend (Fri/Sat) it's probably be greater, and at a huge venue like Brixton the number of wankers will obviously be even greater. The crowd at Brum were (bar a couple, mentioned above) superb and I'm sure it's the case for the majority of gigs. I'm a teacher too, so I'm used to such childish bollocks, but then it helps that I'm a shaven headed bloke who most of such tossers wouldn't argue with - doing it to a woman is fucking inexcusable.

Weird that Barry (moccasynth) thinks all this is the occasion for "LOLS" Barry was amused that the reaction to someone complaining about people shouting about Celtic was for someone to call the guy who moaned a Hun (Rangers fan). It was genuinely funny hence the lolisms. Sheesh. SB

It is but it's also very similar to the Brixton setlist which I also saw. Manchester's looks good with Hasenheide and MFMK, Fear Satan and Travel which I love. I've never been as big a fan of Helicon 1 as most. Give me Fear Satan and Helicon 2 any day.
I'll post a proper review of the Brixton and Gateshead shows shortly.

Thanks to those of you who have confirmed my prediction that the Brixton gig would be destroyed by braying city boys and Nathan Barleys. Greatly reduces my disappointment at not being able to make it. Seriously considering Berlin - great venue and only £53 on Easyjet from Luton. Maybe the prospect of an aftershow gathering at Barry's bar - then straight to the airport for the early flight home.

Mogwai just confirmed as headlining End of the Road in September. I was already strongly tempted by the lineup; now going for sure.
