it's obvious that mogwai come up with some of the best fucking basslines ever, so which is your favorite? i'm gonna have to go with the one from 2 Rights... it totally makes the song once the drums drop out and it's just the banjo, guitars, and vocals going. love it!

I've always had a soft spot for "Ex-Cowboy", as well as "Helicon 1" (which would probably be the obvious choice).

mine would be ex-cowboy as well. though it's very repeating, it has this 'cool' about it, while it's also quite melancholic; i love it. you can actually keep on playing this and people will start to like it (as i've noticed)

I'm keen on Killing All The Flies in all its rolling driving glory, but I think Helicon 1 and Xmas Steps would probably be the main/obvious choices

isn't xmas steps just playing one of the guitar riffs? i think he's talking about that metal-sounding bassline that comes in half-way through the song...

the ONLY correct answer to this question is StereoDee, there is no better bassline on the planet

When I read the topic subject, I instantly thought "2 Rights" aswell! You have good taste in basslines Yeah I love that last 4 minutes at the end too when the bass descends into that chorus effect.... f'kin brilliant. The Tracy bassline is a no-brainer really, since it's really the meat+veg/backbone of the song (and many others) while the E-bow shimmers overhead. It's a really evocative melody though, which brings me to another point. I don't know if this has been discussed here (excuse my newb-ness) but has anyone else noticed that the first opening track on Sigur Ros' "Takk" album blatantly copies the Tracy bass melody?

i haven't noticed this at all, the track "Takk..." doesn't really have a melody... it probably uses a similar chord progression though, which is maybe how a sounds a little bit similar. maybe that's just me though...
