alright, ive been playing an acoustic guitar for a little while now and ive been meaning to get into the electric stuff now. i want to go for that mogwai-ish feel i guess, but i have no clue about electrics or pedals.
can anyone help me out here? what kind of guitar and what kind of "starter" pedals should i get without breaking the bank.
thanks in advance.

well, i recently got a Ibanez Flanger FL9, and i must say it sounds so damn good with some distortion. especially when playing some later mogwai stuff. i haven't tried any other flanger pedals, but i can definitely recommend this.
a boss digital delay is a must, also.
and of course, distortion. electro harmonix big muff pi isthe best distortion pedal ever. J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr swears on it.

i (who got into playing guitar because of mogwai) myself play on a yamaha pacifica 112 (it cost me about 300 euro's), and i must say it plays very well for a budget guitar- i plan on putting in other pickups, simply because i like playing on it. the neck isn't that smooth tho, but you can fix that yourself. if i was to buy a new guitar, i'd get a telecaster (i believe that's what stuart plays most of the time). a friend of mine got a fender telecaster thinline mex, and it sounds and plays really well. it cost him +- €900.. as for pedals; i got a boss metal zone distortion pedal (3d hand - boss pedals tend to stay good forever) and it's a lot of dizzy distortion - maybe even too much. it's nice as a more-distortion-and-loudness-when-you-thought-it-couldn't-get-any-louder pedal but you need to tweak it's settings alot in order to get the sound you want. (electro harmonix big muff? danelectro fab tone? haven't tried any of these yet but they are in mogwai's pedal-army). delay: i got myself a line6 tonecore echo park delay pedal (€149)(and not a boss dd-6) and i love it, it's got a massive amount of settings and it handles quite well once you figure out how it works-which isn't hard). i'm thinking of getting the dd-6 too though, cause you can't have enough delay, and i've tried both and i think they are superb to each other in several ways (f.e., you can't directly control the volume of echo's on the echo park). the dd-6 is more expensive if i'm not mistaken. overdrive: a boss overdrive pedal combined with delay gives a nice sound as well. you can get a danelectro overdrive pedal for around 20 dollars, so you can try that out (imagine sigur ros' bowed guitar parts - this is kinda how it sounds when you get the settings right). i use a boss OD-3 (borrowed )

if you could find a cheap fender tele or strat, you're good to go. even better a jaguar or jazzmaster, but i doubt you'll find one of those cheap.

like rageman said, you're best bet is to go for something not too pricey but at the same time is quality made, so a mexican strat or telecaster would be your best bet. and as for pedals, distortion and delay are definitetly a must if you wanna create that mogwai sound, but i would also recommend and good reverb pedal too.

guitar: get a cheap telecaster
pedals: distortion: proco rat II or big muff delay: any delay will do, look for one that self oscillates if you're into noise
amp: cheap tube amp, look into peavey classic series or fender hot rod series.

just want to cast another vote for a mexican tele. i play bass but i am thinking very seriously about buying a mexican tele to have around when i want to fiddle around with guitar parts to go with some of the stuff i'm writing on bass.

I've got a Mexican Tele too. A lot of money, but definatly worth it. As for effects, I've got a V-Amp2 multi-effect thing and it's pretty afwul. Sure, you get lots of effects for very little money. But if you want a bit of quality, go for the single Boss pedals. I've been looking for a DD-6 for ages now, always seem to miss out on the good deals, damn ebay.

Here's a couple of links for you to check out timothysmonster: www.mogwai.co.uk/faq.html (check the bottom of the page) guitargeek.com/rigview/327/ (a bit old but nevermind) I have to agree with the above posters, delay and distortion are absolute musts for this kind of music - and I will have to add Tremolo to that list cuz they are great for the cleantone stuff (check the main/underlying guitar line for the track "2 Rights" on Rock Action for a subtle yet warm tremolo sound). The Big Muff is an excellent distortion, but then again you guys haven't tried the Hotcake pedal have you? Interesting to note that Mogwai aren't gear-snobs, they use fairly common pedals (even cheapy Danelectro plastic-fantastic ones and the absolutely horrible Boss MetalZone pedal) but they do throw in some interesting ones for good measure... just check out the animated pic at the top of the screen! PS. if you become interested in a certain pedal, you really gotta goto www.harmony-central.com/Effects/Data/#man and read user reviews. It gives you a good overview of what people think of the pedals.. alot of them are surf-guitar/blues-wank off type musicians, but you'll atleast get an idea if that's the pedal you really want.

yeah, i forgot about tremolo... i still have to get a tremolo pedal. i've only recently gotten into pedals (the past three months), so i'm still building up my repotoire. i would also suggest a good flanger pedal too, cuz mr. beast "did for flangers, like interpol did for suits".

only is not lying about harmony-central. i've spent many hours on that site researching gear before purchasing.
