Does anyone else agree? For some reason I just think it surpasses the other 3 in terms of sound and scope. But not by much. Why did it get such shit-middling/average reviews when it came out? Because it sounds like Mogwai? I don't get it...

I actually sort of lost interest in Mogwai when CODY came out. I'd been listening to them since the Helicon 1 single was released and liked both Ten Rapid and Young Team. But when CODY was released, I just thought it was more of the same. It wasn't until I saw them live (when they played in L.A. for the first time) that I appreciated their music beyond their recorded output.
Can't say CODY is my favorite album though. That award goes to Rock Action.

one of the issues i think people have with CODY is that it's too long. i can't think of any other reasons why it's bad. maybe some people don't like the production which i can agree on. if tony doogan produced it then maybe he'd tell the band to shorten some of the songs. maybe???

I listened to it non stop when it came out but it's not my fave (Young Team is). It's very bleak and trancelike but when it gets its claws in you it's hard to stop listening to.

my favourite is cody too. i remember listening to it when it came out with a friend, and not being able to "label" it. see post-rock here in greece sounds as strange to most people as ipods to afghans. second choice is my father my king.

CODY gets my vote as well, but it's a tight race all round, really. The triple whammy of Ex-Cowboy | Chocky | Christmas Steps is still their best half-hour to date, IMO. Not that I don't love all the other records, of course.

I started with CODY and it's an amazing album, not a bad song on there either which is more than can be said for some of the earlier albums. Don't know if it's my favourite, but I agree about the Ex-Cowboy/Chocky/Xmas Steps combo.

I saw the CODY album cover before I knew much about the band. With a title and a cover like that, I knew I had to have it. I already had, and loved, Young Team, but I do think that CODY is what really made me into the obsessive fan I am today. It does seem too long to me at times. But if I'm home doing things, it's great to put on in the background. You just sort of get lost in it... Some mix of Young Team's experimentalism and Cody's overall tone is what I continue to hope for from the band today.

Wow, what the hell do I need to do to like this album? I'm a huge Mogwai fan and i'm embarrsed to say I don't really enjoy this album.

Not that I don't love all the other records, of course. it's funny that you mention that. i feel that punk rock / cody / helps both ways is a great long tune if you combine those three. i suppose the album could be divided in three or four parts. the triple whammy as you put it sounds like a really long godspeed you! black emperor song.

its not like i hate the album. i like some of them, Xmas Steps, the beautiful Chocky, Help Both Ways, Punk Rock, but then there's songs like Ex-Cowboy and May Happiness... where it gets extremely repetitive.
and Cody is beautiful, though I like it better when played live.

May Nothing But Happiness... is probably my favourite Mogwai song (along with 2 Rights, both Helicons, Xmas Steps and so on).
Overall, I think Cody has alot of atmosphere. The songs are deliberately repetitive, and alot of the guitar work is purposely heldback, some of the guitar intros sound as if they were made up on the spot strumming on a couch in the studio in the middle of the night. They have that twee kind of light/subtleness to them.... I really love it. And with the presence of the american football commentary in the background and the very country-rockified "Cody" (which incidentaly sounds like a very American name in itself) kinda lends to the fact that it was recorded in the States. Cody has fucking BALLS that's for sure. I mean, Mogwai-fans lulled into a certain groove on Young Team probably got quite a shock to hear Mogwai go country-music.
I think Cody was such an important step in Mogwai's direction - and anyone who was initially disappointed in the album should go back and try to digest it in a new light.
But, by far the most underated Mogwai album is Rock Action, it's a flippin' musical masterpiece!
