Given that I'm on a continous search for new bands worth listening to, I thought I'd start this thread on bands with an obviously similar sound to Mogwai. I offer four to begin with, and I'd be interested to hear any more recommendations, particularly more obscure bands:
1. Mono - of course, any of their albums or EPs.
2. Stafraenn Hakon - 'I Astandi Rjúpunnar' album for the 'Helicon 1' drone sound.
3. Maserari - a new band to me - try 'The Language of Cities' album for a Cody-like mix of guitars and drums.
4. Larmousse - s/t ep - early Mogwai sound-a-like.

I would agree on Mono. Fucking excellent band all around and really great people as well. I dont hear it so much with Maserati to be honest but they're still a tight, polished act. They have a more jazz inflected sound and they are certainly a tighter, more precise instrumental band than Mogwai but their songs are nowhere near as moving or earth shaking as Mogwai's. Havent heard the other bands you mentioned. I would probably add the following bands to the list: Bardo Pond -Huge influences on Mogwai and you can see why. They arent really as heavy or nasty as Mogwai but their experimentation/psychedelic tinges have influenced the band greatly. They're a great band. I recomend their record "Dilate". Amazing band. M83 -If you havent heard them, you should immediately. They're like Mogwai with two keyboards only. They share the same overwhelming emotional intensity that Mogwai has and man, they're just too much to handle sometimes. By far the best new band I've heard in a long, long time. Some of their shit moves me to tears, some of it makes me feel like I am incredibly high, and some of it makes me want to dance forever. Awesome. Explosions In The Sky -Another great, great band. They are somewhere in between Mogwai and Maserati in terms of overall density and force. They can really play and they write incredible songs. I highly recomend this band to anyone who wants to be blown away right off the bat. The Atlas Ladder - . This is a shameless plug for my band, a band that blatantly rips off Mogwai and the above mentioned bands in a terrible but beautiful way! Haha. Sorry, just had to put it in there.

I agree about Stafraenn Hakon - excellent stuff. Also on Resonant, and well worth a listen, is Dialect - electronica with a definite Mogwai feel.
Plus, try Moly - they're signed to Tenor Vossa.

Just remembered - EMPIRE-BUILDER - their "Waters of The Orient" single is fantastic. They're soon to have a new song out -- at long last -- one side of a Gringo Singles Club 7".
