hey, just pulled this recording out for a listen and was amazed all over again by how good it is. so went to find some info about it and everyone seems to list it as an audience recording (including rob)... but it can't be. sounds very soundboard to me. all the instruments are very high in the mix and the crowd is very much in the distance. does anyone have anymore info about this recording...
here's the setlist: Mogwai - 08/19/97 Edinburgh, UK Jaffa Cake 45m 1. radar maker 2. katrien 3. summer 4. honey 5. a place for parks 6. like herod 7. helicon 1 8. mogwai fear satan
just a pity that there's a few cuts in helicon 1, which is a version like i have never heard before...someone going crazy with the synthesizer on that night!

Unless there are two versions circulating? I got mine from the guy who audience-taped. The person going crazy would have been Brendan O'Hare?

well i have momentarily misplaced the info i got with the cd, but from memory it didn't actually mention any lineage... but rob, if you could listen to your recording and see if it has got the cuts in helicon 1, that should solve it.
also, i'll upload a mp3 sample tonight for people to listen too and see if they think that it's soundboard or audience...
i looked on etree, but it's not listed there at all.
if it is an audience recording - it has to be one of the best out there....

well from having a listen again - this time not on headphones, i can see how it could be an audience recording, and found my info, and it says came from the audience minidisc master. but wonder where he recorded it from for the crowd to be so far in the background - the stage perhaps??? anyways, here's a sample of the last minute of summer - i've left the crowd in at the end so you can hear how far away they are...... s15.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0UZLBJ0KH48JW0ZF53BXEN0Z57and yes, i could upload it to archive.org.

I have to agree that sounds really soundboard-like in style. Not in a "it's a great audience tape so it must be soundboard" way, but in that you can hear the reverb on the snare really clearly, and that yes the audience is really distant. The stereo imbalance makes me think it could be an audience tape though, either from stage lip on the left or RIGHT up against the right speakers.
Anyone else?

Very nice recording - thanks for this. The electronic effects at the start of Helicon were a surprise. Did you hear Stuart say "This next one is of our next album 'Mogwai Young Team'". I wonder if they originally were planning to include 'Mogwai' in the album title.

it is called mogwai young team and not just young team! Oh lordy, you're right. All the years I've been listening to that album, and I never realised - how foolish do I feel...
