(I wonder why Matador objected? - one track on a fairly obscure record doesn't seem a big threat to Mogwai's American record sales) www.canada.com/cityguides/montreal/story.html?id=10b46826-1211-410b-8f55-e392987fd8b8&k=8040One album defies classification: Act 1: Goodbye Friends of the Heavenly Bodies by Neverending White Lights, a dreamy, downcast project featuring 16 vocalists, including Our Lady Peace's Raine Maida and Finger Eleven's Scott Anderson. .... One singer wanted $5,000 (U.S.) just to look at a song. Needless to say, he isn't on the album. (Victor couldn't afford to pay his guests, but offered them a share of the royalties from sales and airplay.) Neither are the members of Mogwai, a group of Scottish noise-rockers who recorded with Victor in his basement studio. Their record label, Matador, blocked the use of the song on Act 1.

Replying to myself twice now (a sure sign of madness), but checking brightlight, "John dies at 56" was a song title suggested for 'Happy Songs'.

I'd heard they were supposed to be on it, and then found out that they weren't.... I'd assumed the band found out who else is on it (some really really lame bands) and backed out for sort of that reason. It wouldn't surprise me if that's why Matador didn't want them on there.
