Seeing as how I cannot stop listening to them at all, I think that Mogwai have slowly but surely become my favourite band on the planet. I know that we all love Mogwai, but are they your tops?
GY!BE, Radiohead, Sigur Ros and Led Zeppelin have occupied this spot prior but nobody seems to do it for me like Mogwai.
-They obtain a perfect balance between making incredible music and not taking themselves too seriously.
-They sing only when they need to or feel like it.
-Their guitar work is incredible.
-They have weird song titles.
-They have consistently grown with each record and somehow re-created their sound every time they put out a new album.
-Unlike most other bands, they actually seem to have gotten "heavier" with age (Ratts of the Capital, for example). Age seems to mean nothing to them.
-They want nothing to do with the mainstream and seem content to be in their own little world of their own creation.
-They put on an amazing live show.
-They have strong, quality b sides/unreleased material.

Right now they are, and have been since "Young Team".
They head a current obsession list which includes Bark Psychosis, Mono, Envy, James Orr Complex, Noxagt, Aereogramme, Pan Sonic, and Godspeed You! Black Emperor and their many side-projects, especially Silver Mt. Zion and Hrsta.
There are quite a few arttists who have been my personal Number One over the last 25 years or so, including Cocteau Twins, Cindytalk, The Associates, The Human League, Kitchens Of Distinction, Thomas Koner and The Cure.

No joke about The Human League, I'm afraid -- I was only 11!! Anyway, the original version of "Being Boiled" still does it for me.

Mogwai are my fourth favorite band below Manic Street Preachers, Mansun, and The Wildhearts. do mansun still exist? only i haven't heard of them for ages, not that it particularly bothers me. stripper vicar, was that one of their 'songs'? cause for me it wins the prize of the worst song title of all time...

Mansun split about a year and a half ago just as they were finishing the recording of their 4th album. Paul Draper (singer) has put together a 3-CD box set of songs from the recording sessions, as well as a best of non-album tracks (b-sides and non album singles), and unreleased material. it's coming out this fall.
and yes, i like The Wildhearts.

I think Mogwai are currently third behind Tool and Radiohead. , though I'm very much listening to Mogwai the most recently and some of the stuff I wasn't hugely into before is hitting me on a whole new level

Its a tough call between mogwai and built to spill, doug marsh is a great musician man, I love that band. fantastic. Perfect From Now On is, pretty much, perfect. Starting an album with: "every thousand years this metal sphere ten times the size of jupiter floats just a few yards past the Earth" ...i'd welcome other suggestions for better opening lines. I'd imagine NMH's 'In The Aeroplane Over The Sea' starts with something great too. 'There's Nothing Wrong With Love' is pretty cool too. One of the very few currently active bands I really wish I could get to see live.

"i had skin like leather and the diamond hard look of a cobra. I was born blue and weathered and burst just like a supernova. I could walk like Brando into the sun and dance like a cassanova..."
my fave opening lines of all time. Any guesses as to album & by whom Rob? Or anyone else for that matter...

biffy clyro? jesus christ yeah, you're right. but we all can't be as cool as you, can we? god forbid we stray from the typical post-rock-i'm-so-indie-it-hurts-bullshit you restrict yourself to listening to.

If you had a look at the 'Now Playing' thread in the general forum, you'd see that most of the people on this board, including me, have quite varied music taste, and that post-rock rarely pops up on there. I love it when message boards start descending into an atmosphere where you feel you can't express your opinion without fear of getting a hostile reply...

can we play nice, please folks? expressing an opinion on anything is fine, but I think (hope) we're all beyond the playground spat stage?

I love it when message boards start descending into an atmosphere where you feel you can't express your opinion without fear of getting a hostile reply... fair enough. but at the same time, if you don't agree with someone else's taste in music, it would be more constructive to express "your opinion" in a non-condescending way. but despite all that, let's just agree to disagree then.

To be fair: you set the disparaging ball rolling, as it were.
