Howdy chaps,
I read on Myspace that there is a 3 dayer at the 12 Bar, Preston (near the Bus Station and Guild Hall) on the 27/28/29TH OCTOBER 2005. I have nothing really to say except for it's going to be top bosh from the looks. No need to big it up really, but if you fancy listening to a LOT of music over a 3 day period for pretty bloody cheap, check out the line up!
Thursday 27th October
Mugstar
Liverpudlian 'Peel Favourites' (LOOK! I'm cashing in!) who recently did a session for Huw Stephens also. Think noisy poppy guitar music which brings to mind agit-punk bands like Arab On Radar, Minutemen, etc.. www.mugstar.com/
Capulet
The return of Capulet! They haven't played for a while and have pretty much perfected the evil undertone of their sound they've been trying to master for the past year. Not just one of the best local bands, but best UK bands...www.houseofcapulet.com/
I AM MIKE
I AM MIKE are also a band from Liverpool who have the meaty riffs of Refused, the choppy raucous of Zappa and the no holds-barredness of Shellac. They have no website but they are surely rocking.
ITBS
SHATTERING death-pop. 3 unfortunate chaps lost their guitarist to A Little Death a couple o' months ago but some would say they have even got better. They rock in a FALL-sort of way. www.myspace.com/insidetheblacksquare/
£3 on door. Turn up at say 8?
Friday 28th October
Theoretical Girl
Theoretical Girl is..a girl from London that plays no wave-ey music with just a drum machine and a guitar. Shes on Fast Product Records. www.myspace.com/iamtheoreticalgirl/
"I found her mesmerising, the music was so jaunty and energetic, yet she had this elegance and subtlety that I have never seen before. Go and see Theoretical Girl for yourself to understand what it is all about, because the music is amazing and the stage presence is unlike anything else. - NO MORE HEROES MAGAZINE"
Y'r Impossible
The hype surrounding Y'r Impossible is clearly deserved and their catchy popp/art/punk music is damn impressive. What can I say? Listen-- www.myspace.com/yrimpossible
Corinthians
As heard on Preston FM on Wednesday night, the leaders of the inevitable Wigan Pieskronk(TM) scene, Corinthians make instantly funky & dancable rock music, ala DEVO. 7" out with chaps from Leeds called Cowtown in time for this gig!www.myspace.com/versusrome/
Nancy Elizabeth Cunliffe
Nancy Cunliffe is great! Her songs are beautiful, sort of like Bob Dylan but less angry and jittery. "I couldn't be bothered to stick around for Regina Spektor afterwards: I was happy with what her support had delivered." is what them chaps from HIGH VOLTAGE (who did the KBC 7"!) said. www.nancycunliffe.co.uk/
Oh, and did I forget to mention that ABORTED FILMS shall be putting on some of their sick sick films inbetween bands? One of their dark humour stories has a chap in that was in CORONATION STREET(!). A few inbetween bands, and a few after bands.
Come at 8...£3.
SATURDAY 29TH OF OCTOBER
the last day of the 3 days!
CHARLOTTEFIELD are the one of the best bands in the UK right now. Euphoric My Bloody Valentine-esque guitars over a shouty, bass-led lead. Prepare yourself, this band shall ruin your night and urinate in your drink. Their new record on FatCat Records, "How Long Are You Staying?" is easily one of the best of 2005. www.charlottefield.com/ and download 'Low Clouds' or 'Nine tails' live at the Hobgoblin.
The Phlegm Fatales are also one of the best bands around that make quite a racket for four chaps that are straight outta Preston. Think Magazine, Wire, The Fire Engines and you're nearly there. www.myspace.com/phlegmfatales/
PROJECTIONS are 2 members of Cat On Form (Southern Records) and 1 member of Tonkl. Together they play a disjointed racket of songs with cowbells, keyboards, singing, and sometimes without all of those things. Their guitarist STEVE is also in Blood Red Shoes, who loads of people enjoyed in July. Rumour has it WARP RECORDS are interested in them, but we shall have to see. www.catonform.co.uk/projections/
ARMRUG are a right beast of a band. So much so that they're pretty hard to describe. There's sort of a loud guitar, a quiet twankly guitar and drums that are hit really hard. Seriously, they're awesome. www.armrug.co.uk/
Heavy Fluid Addicts are veterans of the old Preston scene and have recently reformed - This will be their FIRST GIG BACK. Don't be a dick and miss this ace reunion. Check out their forum for more info.
Grand Prix 86 are a very special band indeed. Comprising of a member of MAGOO (WHO DID THAT SPLIT WITH MOGWAI ON FIERCE PANDA!!! OMFG), an ex-member of EVADER and some Norwich loon, they come from said place and play a twee-indie-pop bunch of songs using 2 casio keyboards and a drumkit. Lovely Beach Boys-y chords over triple-harmony vocals (aww yeah) and lots of clicky odd bits on the drumkit. The day before, they're playing Nottingham, and 2 days after that they play at Londons 93 Feet East for the Fantastic Plastic Records' Bearsuit launch. www.myspace.com/grandprix86/
THEE NEERLYMEN also are very special and some of the chaps in the 3 piece do the Bad Apple Club who do awesome gigs at the Adelphi. Also, one of the members was indeed in CORNERSHOP! Anybody who shouts 'Brimful Of Asha' through a song gets stabbed, just you watch.
SECRETS ATE OUR HIGHWAY are a nowave 2 piece who feature the Guitar & Drums section of Acid Test Radio (R.I.P) and are basically gtr/drums/melodica/vocals. This should be dead cool, loike.
Chris from Sleepercells effects pedals/Noise project JEREMIAHS BIG PURPLE DICTAPHONE shall be somewhat interesting too. Sorry I can't write much about this one!
Eddie from Lee Malvo/Putting on gigs in Lancaster fame is hopefully going to set up his distro there, so bring some cash to fill his pockets...!!
Well firstly, ACTION RECORDS have decided to put Brighton youth team EPIDEME on a bit before the gig starts at 1:30pm. They got an utterly ace response for their sweaty performance in July at the Mitre and definitely deserve an audience. Plus, this one's free...! 1:30.
Phew...So tickets are £6 for all 3 days, otherwise it's £3 for Thur, £3 Fri, £5 Sat...Buy a ticket. I'll try and put some in Action Records tomorrow!
