gosh there have so many this year
Jesu's astonishing debut was looking like it had it for so long this year, but then Nadja's "Truth Becomes Death" has come up along the rails and just about sneaked it -- it's an amazing drone (doom) metal album 3 long tracks by a duo playing all manner of instruments. the harmonies are jaw-dropping and the recording quality is absolutely mesmerising if you like Earth or Sunn O))), then this is definitely worth checking out, as Nadja are easily better

Number 1 in this or any other year: Sufjan Stevens - Illinoise such a beautiful record
The rest of the top 10 (although this is pretty fluid with some of the others mentioned below, particularly the King Creosote albums - Rocket DIY could easily swap places with Rules OK):
Arab Strap - The Last Romance Bronnt Industries Kapital - Virtute et Industria Electrelane - Axes Field Music - s/t Gangplank - Balloons King Creosote - KC Rules OK Magnetophone - The Man Who Ate The Man Alasdair Roberts - No Earthly Man Tunng - Mothers Daughter...
Bubbling under: Malcolm Middleton - Into The Woods Jose Gonzalez - Veneer Broadcast - Tender Buttons Autolux - Future Perfect KC - Rocket DIY Buck 65 - Secret House Against the World Lucky Luke - Patrick The Survivor Mogwai - Government Commissions (not in the Top 10 purely because they're familiar versions of the songs that I've been listening to for a long time) Hood - Outside Closer Neenor - s/t Reporter - Hiko Marissa Nadler - The Saga of Mayflower May The Mountain Goats - The Sunset Tree Fence Collective Welcomes The Hummingbeans
Arcade Fire and Espers miss out by virtue of having been in my 2004 list. Devendra Banhart is getting better with repeated plays but I haven't yet managed to get through the whole thing in one sitting.
Things I still need to hear - Smog, Part Chimp
Most disappointing record of the year - Broken Social Scene
I don't get the fuss, their best song is a complete rip-off of 'The Kids Are Alright' - Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
