I haven't seen this, and I'm not sure if I want to, really. I haven't heard many good reports of it, despite the usual gush on the promo - all new films are described as "brilliant" or "a modern masterpiece" by someone somewhere -- just take a look at what Jonathan Ross's dull brother Paul rated!
Anyway, I'm starting to get a bit tired of all this Kurt business, to be honest. Too much talk in lauded terms and re-issuing of the same music seems a bit desparate.

elephant is incredible, it's a simple story but it's very powerful.

"gerry" is great art... but not all that entertaining as far as movies go...
not that it has to be...

I had issues with Gerry but I agree Elephant is great although I'd like to throw my hat in the ring and say Drugstore Cowboy is not only his best work but alot more accessable than any of his recent output.
It amuses me that nobody ever mentions the Psycho remake when they talk about Van Sandt (I wonder why that could be?)

Is Elephant the Columbine film? Absolutely dreadful I thought. (Spoilers here) Incredibly slow moving (how very arty!) and full of media stupidity in showing the two being bummers and playing OMG violent computer games OMG! The whole film was completely pointless and lacked any kind of insight or depth.

Last Days isn't a "masterpiece" or anything, but definitely interesting. the movie moves along slow the whole time, but hey, this isn't an action movie. it feels more like a documentary, even though some of the things they aren't sure of on Kurt Cobain (yes, i know, his name is Blake in the film, but its BASED on Kurt).
and one of the songs he performs on his acoustic is really good. it might be a b-side or something...

Spot on, I had the same feeling. He even gave himself a Hitchcock-esque cameo!

The whole film was completely pointless and lacked any kind of insight or depth. Perhaps he should have put some elves in it or a giant ape. Each to their own I guess but before posting please think about what you are saying. The "slow moving" isn't just to be "arty" but a deliberate way to build tension & atmosphere (which it does, rather well) & the "media stupidity" you talk of is based on the facts that in the wake of columbine a lawsuit was filed against makers of a certain games blaming them for such incidents. The film isn't neccessarily blaming video games but merely highlighting that they do appear to have (or at least people believe) some part to play in incidents like columbine. Just to clarify Elephant is not Columbine The Movie.

I remember the controversy but there has never been any link found. The film just highlighted the idiocy purveyed by Daily Mail readers which is hardly something to be applauded and to me just showed the ignorance behind who made it. Showing the two killers as being gay was really horrid and unncessary too.
Anyway, ignoring my personal opinions about it, that's pretty much all that the film explored which is a pretty piss poor effort. Why not show more of the motivations or the killers relationships etc? We saw them playing Doom and kissing and that was about it, pathetic. You might be slagging off mainstream films in your first paragraph (which fair enough are 99% shite) but at least most of those don't take an hour and a half to build tension.
