heavy rotation on MTV2 means I've probably had my fill, although they're perhaps one of the best of a lot of same-y sounding bands i quite like System Of A Down, but not enough to buy their records I enjoyed the last Mastodon album, but haven't played it for quite a while

Slipknot, System of a Down?.... Jesus... Is this a Mogwai board?
Hate to sound like a real elitist prat, but you should really dig deeper than MTV bands if you want a metal fix.
Try some of these:
At the Gates The Haunted (personal favourite) HateSphere Arch Enemy

Well, absolutely I love Boris, Earth, Sunn, of course - I just wanted something a little faster, more clean, as Slipknot are - but as my "elitist prat" friend above (he he, i'm just the same) I was looking for something different. Isis? heh, I'll have to look into it, I have heard they have a terrible vocalist, which shouldn't have but has put me off previously. I'll look into them....

So how do The Haunted sound?

So how do The Haunted sound? The Haunted are modern thrash metal, ie: fast as hell, heavy as fook, extremely tight and well produced with seething lyrics of hatred and disgust of fellow mankind (no dungeons and dragons stuff don't worry). No resemblance to nu-metal, black-metal or any other cheesey metal offshoot. Just straight up with a hint of hardcore breakdowns, raw punk attitude and death metal melodics. Ex-members of At the Gates. Good stuff! www.the-haunted.com/

most of hydrahead's bands are extremely good (that is, if you are into heavier things). isis, pelican, knut, jesu etc.

Jesu are astonishing - the debut album (esp. "Friends Are Evil") is brilliant.
&& I know I've said it before, but I reckon it's worth repeating: if you like Earth and Sunn O))), then give Nadja a try -- their "Truth Becomes Death" album for Alien8 is one of the best albums I've heard in the last few years.

if you like jesu, give final a try. its broadricks ambient project. if you are into 20 minutes/two chords songs... ambient stretched to its limits. it makes philip glass sound too complex!

I've heard just the one Final track ["Hide", which is on the Isolationalism compilation from 94] - it's quite tricky getting hold of those albums these days. I'll probably try to find some soon, but at the moment I'm hooked onto Acid Mothers Temple. Justin Broadrick worked on several projects with Kevin Martin (of the amazing band God). Best of the lot is Techno Animal's "Re-Entry" -- a stunning double CD - well worth hunting down. For other brilliant gloomy/dark ambient music, you can't go wrong with Thomas Köner, who's an absolute genius. "Permafrost" and especially "Aubrite" are devastating.
