I first heard Mono only a couple of years back, and think they're magnificent. "One Step More And You Die" is a fantastic album. Might be worth your while checking the older threads in this section for other bands to get acquainted with - I'd heartily recommend Moly.

they can play and create some really beautiful songs, but they severely lack from creativity. Couldn't have said it any better. Almost all of their songs are way too long and way too repetitive. But there are a few beauties as well, Halo and A Speeding Car (which could have been made by GY!BE) are definately my favourites.

mono are good. i remember seeing them in some crappy venue in london a few years ago in front of a crowd of 4 people (including me) - but grand they were. haven't kept up with them - only have their first 2 records, but one more step...is a fantastic record. was the soundtrack to my train journeys to work for quite a while.
but the mogwai comparison is obvious to me. 'halo' to me sounds exactly the same as helicon 1.

Have you guys woken up to Saxon Shore yet? Seriously check them out! Mono are great, that One More Step album complements Mogwai's CODY really well. Can't blame them for being influenced by great music

All their songs are practically identical and they are heavily influenced by a select few other bands but they're quite nice. Wouldn't buy their CDs and wouldn't see them live again but they're ok if you're in the right mood.

The new mono album ("You are there") is magnificent. It is similar to their last album, but it is better. Anyway my favorite mono album is the first one, "Under the pipal tree" although their music is very similar to mogwai or GY!BE in the next albums.

Under the Pipal Tree is my favourite as well, even if only for Karelia (Opus 2) as the opener. I only listened to the new album once but it seemed ok. More of the same but if that's what you're after then I think you'll enjoy.

heartily agree about "You Are There" - astonishing
I've posted somewhere else (myspace I think) that I think the Mogwai comparisons count for nothing these days...Mogwai's sound has definitely moved on, whereas Mono are refining their style with each album, which is fine by me if the latest album if anything to go by
Mono are the best at what they do, and "You Are There" is their best yet

i caught mono playing with pelican saturday night at nuemo's in seattle, wa, usa...
mono was quite good... for some reason (even after having read this thread) i was expecting something like an instrumental version of "low" (having never heard any material before)... obviously, i was way off... they had a ton of energy on stage, and were quite loud... of couse the usual heckling during quiet parts was present... i will now search out an album to pick up...
pelican was also very good, as expected... as is usually the case, i'm enjoying the new album much more now after seeing some of the songs live... after the show, the band members were selling merch, and mingling with the crowd, which was pretty cool, as i was able to get a closer look at one of the guitar player's tatoos of the old hydra-head logo...
uh, yeah... -Rob F.

I've seen Mono a few times. I think they've got more individual over time (the first album does sound a lot like Mogwai, but the last two albums have been completely different). 'You Are There' is possibly their best - the final track kills me every time. They're great live, and Taka is a really cool guy if you talk to him.
There's a Mono collaboration album with world's end girlfriend out now in Japan. It's basically string music with occasional guitar and drums, quite different from both artists' solo work. Some of it reminds me a little of the track 'Are You There?' It's worth checking out if it gets released outside Japan.

I agree Oroshi. There's alot of stigma around Mono being little more than quiet-loud Mogwai rip-offs... which could definitely apply to alot of their previous material, but Mono AND Mogwai have both progressed in quite different directions, that there is very little direct comparison now. I think the most blatant 'Mogwai-esque' stuff Mono have ever done is "Op Beach" on 'Under the Pipal' Tree, which is a direct Come on Die Young influnced track complete with off-beat snares and sombre pick harmonics, and some moments on 'One More Step and you Die'. The main heavy riff on 'COM' off One More Step is almost an exact copy of a Perfect Cirle riff.. can't remember the track name though. Mono also take alot of cues from Godspeed you Black Emperor, especially nowadays with their more orchestrial stuff. Anyway, mono are fuckin awesome. Come to New Zealand please

I love Mono. I can't believe no one's mentioned "Halcyon (Beautiful Days)" from Walking Cloud yet! That song gets me every time. "You Are There" is extremely well done. I agree that Mono seems to take some que's from Godspeed. "You Are There" seems to have a similar way of slowly progressing into the peak of each song; especially in " The Flames Beyond the Cold Mountain." Just got back from the Radiohead concert here in San Diego, CA. Almost touched Thom Yorke's foot. They've got some amazing new stuff as well. Too bad their label dropped them.

"Trailer 5" is THE most beautiful song I've ever heard in my life, it surely beats any other Mono' songs (and any Mogwai's, sorry guys). It starts quietly with piano then grows slowly with guitar and drums adding, and takes your tripes for 19 minutes, a true beauty ! "Trailer 3" is also a masterpiece but a little below "Trailer 5". Nice pictures narlus, professional ?

Yeah, great pictures, good job. Mono have just announced a European tour, which is quite exciting, as I find them a great live band. Remember seeing mono & mogwai in the same week one time, and being much more impressed with mono on that particular occasion.
