stuart wrote a little on their website that they've mastered a forthcoming bbc sessions album. does anyone have an idea of which songs are going to be included on it?

Stop Coming To My House, hopefully.

that depends on whether it's lifted purely from the pre-recorded sessions (Peel 97/98 and Lamacq) or the live-at-Maida-Vale sets (the more recent Peels and the two Mary-Anne Hobbs sets).
I can't remember anyone video-ing at Maida Vale last year, that'd have been great footage for the DVD.

What format do these things normally take? Presumable they can't fit on everyting they've done, so how does it work? These are the BBC sessions I remember them doing 11/1/97 Peel (4 songs) 28/10/97 Breezeblock (4 songs) 17/2/98 Peel (4 songs) 18/6/98 Breezeblock (3 songs) 1/9/98 Peel (4 songs) 29/3/99 Lamacq (4 songs) 16/4/01 Evening Session (4 songs) 17/10/01 Peel (5 songs) 21/5/03 Peel (8 songs)
So that's 40 songs, which I can't see fitting on a single CD...

It'll probably be just a best of in that sense surely.
I'd love it to be a 2CD, i'm really looking forward to its release

oh right I got that one off BL where it's listed as
like herod r u still in 2 it? [instrumental] helicon I [summer?]

the mention of 'summer' comes from a conversation i had a long time ago with someone who'd heard the original broadcast and seemed convinced that they'd finished with 'summer'
the recording of this set that's been in circulation for a number of years is, apparently, from the original studio master tapes, so perhaps i should remove 'summer' from the list

2/08/2004 BBC Album (some details) Our forthcoming BBC sessions album will be called Government Commisions: BBC Session 1996-2003 and will include selected recordings from our first to last sessions for John Peel and also songs recorded for Steve Lamaq. The track listing is Hunted By A Freak, R U Still In 2 It? (instrumental), Helicon 2, Kappa, Secret Pint, Like Herod, Superheroes Of BMX, Helicon 1, Stop Coming To My House. All songs are studio versions apart from the first and last songs which were broadcast live from Maida Vale. It will be released by PIAS sometime in the autumn." this was lifted from the mogwai site this morning - not as excited now!

hmmm some rather bizzare choices of songs there (kappa, secret pint)... should still be good though

Me likey the inclusion of Secret Pint I think the live version with cello is one of the best live moments the band has to offer. Shame they dont play it much anymore. Helicon 1 is probably from the 2003 session, in which they played pretty much everything from HSFHP. Too bad they didnt include that version of Ratts and Killing All The Flies. Amazing versions. Superheroes of BMX is a nice choice as well. All in all it looks like it will be a great release. I agree it could be a tad longer though...

Hel 1 is from the Lamacq 99 session, if Stuart's note on it being the studio version is correct. And it'll be plenty long enough - the version of Herod is 19 mins, for starters.

Ok, good to know. Is the 99 version of Helicon 1 as good as the one from 2003? The '03 version is the only one I've heard and its mindblowing. Can you comment on any of the other versions from this release?

i prefer the 1999 version because it's longer. if i'm not mistaken it's over 8 minutes long. if there would be a official live version i would think this is the one.

The '99 version of Helicon 1 is IMHO the best version ever of the song. Just absolutely beautiful.

Helicon 1 (99 radio version) is Mogwai's finest moment on record. Ooooooh yeah.
But I've just realised what they've missed from the CD. Get rid of 'stop coming to my house' (which nobody voted for in our recent poll) and put on the wonderful 12 minute '2 rights' from Steve Lamacq's show (voted #1 Mogwai song).

The '99 version of Helicon 1 is IMHO the best version ever of the song. Just absolutely beautiful. i seem to remember someone from the mogwai camp calling this version the definitive version of the long and IMO they are right. amazing. i think it's the best version of herod too. i would have loved 'chocky' to have found a place or 'country' just because the recordings i have of them are not as good as the others. but most of all the peel version of 'ex-cowboy' is the finest thing they have ever recorded - astonishing beauty. i just want the loud parts in it to go on forever and the piano adds to the joy. also any tracks from CODY that don't have the evil hand of fridmann on them if just fine with me. the peel version of kappa is also far superior to the album version. i wonder why the mary-anne hobbs ones were left out altogether? they did seem to be plagued with tech. problems i recall, dropping guitars and stuff

have Pitchfork ever heard Lamacq's show?
"the UK's most far-reaching indie radio show, Lamacq Live" is nothing short of wrong.

ok, final definitive word - 'like herod' and 'helicon 1' are the lamacq session versions, NOT the mary-anne hobbs versions. despite what the press release says.
