As many/all of you will be aware already, both Aidan Moffat and Malcolm Middleton have albums out in the next few weeks. Aidan's is 'spoken word' tales of sexual exploits (although most of it does have some musical backing), Malcolm's is more stripped-back than his last album.
Malcolm sounds like a man approaching middle age and comfortable with that. Aidan sounds like a man who still thinks there's a bit of mileage in past glories. The latter might be more rock 'n' roll but the former makes for a much more enjoyable record.
As an Arab Strap fan, I'm finding it quite disturbing how tired and tawdry Aidan's lyrics sound on this, particularly after the relative restraint of 'The Last Romance'. By contrast, Malcolm is develping into a lyricist who regularly makes me smile and occasionally laugh out loud.

As brilliant as Arab Strap were, the prospect of Aidan's LP doesn't grab me immediately, and I didn't enjoy Malcolm's last LP as much as I thought I would. It is good, though. I've enjoyed the Lucky Pierre singles more than those albums, too - the "Humbug"/"Darth Bastard" 12-inch is total genius. Still, I'm always up for a challenge, and I'm bound to get them anyways.

The solo releases of Arab Strap members prove once again what we have all seen numerous times. Bands are bigger than their musicians together. We cant expect something different from Malcolm and Aidan. They split because they didnt want any more Arab Strap music, what we loved in them is lost. Someone should find something new to love in their solo releases. I cant! I hope for one more Arab Strap release though... They have so many great radio sessions that could be easily released form Chemikal or someone else. If you know anyone in Chemikal, please force them to do it. And finally I want to write my now favourite Arab Strap song. Their cover in Black Sabbath's "Changes". It grabs me every time.
