Amazon.co.uk are now listing the Friend Of The Night single. It gives the tracklisting as: 1. Friend Of The Night 2. Fresh Crown 3. 1% Of Monster 4. Friend Of The Night I'm guessing the 4th track will be the video.

I've just noticed that it's also available as a 7" single...don't remember seeing any announcements about that, but still - a nice surprise.

The Forward Russia single that charted at no.36 last weekend sold less than 3000 copies. SURELY Mogwai can manage that?! Hopefully everyone here will make sure to buy a copy from a chart return outlet of some sort?

...Has the song being getting played on daytime radio 1? I never listen to the radio anymore so i would never know. It's pure speculation on my part again, I'm afraid I haven't listened to daytime Radio 1 for years, mainly because (a) it sucks, and (b) it sucks some more. I doubt it's getting any airplay anyway, given that (a) it's instrumental, and (b) it's rather good. Post-Xmas was always seen as a fallow time for chart-friendly pop, so maybe there's an outside chance. Not that I'm suggesting Mogwai would contrive to put a single out at this time of year just to see if it would chart. And in any case, it's been years since they had a single out (2001's "My Father My King").

I have no idea what this russia band sound like they are prob pretty weak and very piss poor. I remember when BIS were on top of the pops, that was funny.

I have some distant memory that MFMK was too long to be eligible for the UK singles charts. Is that right?
I'm sure Friend Of The Night should make a dent somewhere in the Top 40. Surely it's about time???

For a while in the 90s, the qualification for a single was maximum 4 tracks, maximum 40 minutes! (I know it's weird) - which was the only way some Orb singles got to the Top 40.
I'm guessing the time limit has been reduced since then, which probably gave rise to the numerous CD editions with different b-sides, thereby bumping up the sales and chart position.

Friend Of The Night is now available TODAY (Sun 29th Jan) to download on Napster together with 1% of Monster and Fresh Crown. For anyone remotely interested ...Napster downloads count towards the chart.

Can someone confirm that Fresh Crown is 4:44 and cuts out right at the end? I purchased from 7digital.com and thats what they have. It dont sound right though. If thats the real song its a shame - its just getting good when it cuts out!

Is this single a UK only single? I was under the impression (apparently the wrong one) that it was being released in the US as well...

the rules: The maximum running time for any format is 20 minutes if more than one different song is featured, or 40 minutes if only one song is featured in multiple versions/mixes.
so the 'gwai could have cut 12s off mfmk and qualified, or it seems, also included a remix of mfmk up to 19:48 long to have qualified, but, suprisingly, didn't.

So, Rob you say that the video for Friend of the Night was abandoned and the official site states that no posters were produced to advertise the single - a oversight I think Barry stated? Hmm. In ensuring that Mogwai's only chance for years to get a chart single, is it fair to think that Alan McGhee, as manager, has royally fucked up?? Or is it not his responsibility?

I don't think it's anything to do with McGee? I'm sure it'd be pretty difficult (and pointless) to start apportioning blame.

Got my mum to grab me the single (I live abroad) and the virgin in Shrewsbury had sold out. Shrewsbury isn't exactly London, but it suggests the single's doing alright (or that virgin didn't bother stocking many copies).

If thats the real song its a shame - its just getting good when it cuts out! The version I have also seems to cut out abruptly, at about the same time. Not sure though if this is intentional or what. Still, really good b-sides. Any new Mogwai is great to hear, especially when it's damn good music like this.
