when did you first hear mogwai and what was the circumstances? i first heard them on a compilation cd that was only available on a copy of N.M.E. this was back in 1999 when the blur are ****e "campaign" started. i liked blur so i wondered what the fuzz was all about. i also had read some comments stuart had said in some other english music magazine (probably select). and i thought: "these guys has balls to say something like this". i realized later that all of this was a joke, of course. so i listened to this track which was a live recording of ex-cowboy which is great. and after listening to it a couple of times i was hooked and bought "come on die young" a couple of days later.

i first heard Mogwai when I bought the New Paths To Helicon 7" single at the Virgin Megastore in Hollywood back in 1997. I don't know exactly why bought it but I think it was purely for the name of the band. i kind of lost interest after CODY came out but regained interest when they played their first L.A. show during the CODY US tour and have been a faithful listener since.

I became aware of the band back when Mogwai Young Team came out, but I wasn't really a fan at the time as I didn't care for the album. A music store a friend of mine worked at received a bunch of promotional items for the album and I eventually got ahold of their store copy since they weren't going to play the album anymore, and they weren't allowed to sell it. I enjoyed Yes! I Am A Long Way From Home and Like Herod, but the rest of the album didn't catch fire with me. A few years later I saw the video for Christmas Steps on TV and really enjoyed it, so I decided to give Come On Die Young a purchase and I thought that album was excellent. They've stuck with me since. I'm still not a huge MYT fan for the record.

And now I'm quite definitely obsessed

early 1996, my usual (at that point) Friday afternoon visit to Plastic Factory record shop in Birmingham. Steve, the guy behind the counter, waves this 7" at me and says 'I think you might like this'. After playing 'Lower' to me, he says 'We've only got one copy and I'm having it'. Fortunately I picked up a copy in another shop later that afternoon. The start of a long road...

5yrs - sheesh. I was 19 then!
Prior to 'gwai, I listened to (and still have love for) Metallica (before '96) and early Verve (which makes sense to move to Mogwai) amongst others.

Heard them through the grape vine through a record store at Glasgow. Couple of people were talking about them at it sounded curious, so I bought Young Team...this must have been around 1999. So I then moved on to buying CODY and haven't stopped listening since.

Read a blurb about 'em in an insert that came inside The Jesus Lizard EP on Jet Set Records, back in 1998. Thought they sounded pretty cool from the description, so I went out and picked up "Young Team". Needless to say, I've been hooked ever since.

I first heard of Mogwai a few years ago when Trail of Dead played with them in England or was it Scotland or Ireland? Somewhere back home. Anyway, Conrad said they were great guys and so I checked their music out and liked them. Their music is intense and real and crazy, just like them! I met them at the bar at Coachella and they are great guys. Also being Irish and this may be strange but I love everything to do with Scotland. My mum used to live in Edinburgh. I hope to go there one day. But I am rambling so its back to work..... Peace, Eilis

total guitar magazine introduced me to mogwai when they had tracy on their coverdisc im pretty sure it was released around the time of young teams release so it would have been late 1997. i would put tracy on repeat and listen to it at night to help me get to sleep, i listened to it so much i knew the telephone conversation word by word, it wasnt until early 1998 when i got around to buying young team. since then ive been hooked!

A big thank you to whoever runs this!
I first heard about Mogwai from Ajay Sharma's old Swerverdriver website back in 1997. I was (and still am) a huge Swervedriver fan and I was on Ajay's fansite looking the BBS. Some one had made this comment, "I like the sparse bits of noise. They (Swervedriver) use noise in a musical way. Not like Mogwai wo make noise just to be noisy."
Well, the noisy parts of Swervedriver's music were the parts I loved best, so I thought I had better check Mogwai out.
I found Mogwai's website anf it had two 10 second sound clips of Like Herod and Mogwai Fear Satan. I was blown away. These 20 seconds of music were so amazing that I immediately ordered Young Team and 10 Rapid from a local record store. They actually had 4 Satin there, (in the dance section, thnx Jetset) and I bought that right away as well. I swear I listened to it a thousand times in a row.
Mogwai has since been my favorite band. Jebuz! 7 years is along time to have a favorite band! They were the first band I turned myself onto and I can't seem to get anyone I know to like them as much as me...

I downloaded happy songs (f)or happy people by some strange band i'd heard about as soon as it leaked on the internet. Put it on, nothing.
3 months later i put it on again, and for some reason something clicked, and i fell in love, listened to the album constantly and got more, then went and bought it all on cd and went to see them at the Manchester academy in October, One of my favorite bands ever since.

Yeah, go ahead and link it...
The site basically served the purpose of archiving all the Mogwai links, photos and articles I had on my computer at the time!
Apologies for the adverts.. I hate Angelfire!

Growing up in the eighties and holding the Cure's Faith & Seventeen Seconds as to of my favorite ablums because of the mood and the way they flow. In 1999 read a review on Mogwai and how they compared Mogwai to Seventeen Seconds era Cure, so I immediately went out and bought 4 Satin and EP. I loved them so then I bought Ten Rapid, Young Team and CODY. Though it is a different time then the early eighties Cure it deffinately has that mood I was looking for. Mogwai to me are making some of the best music in long time. I have now seen them 12 times including the 2 times they played with the Cure. London and Palm Springs

guys, please keep this through private messaging. i quote the f.a.q. from the official mogwai site:
Q: Do you mind fans taping your shows? A: No, unless they sell them to other people, which happens a lot. Sometimes the venue will not allow you to tape stuff anyway. We regularly check ebay for dodgy stuff also, and we get it taken down and sometimes the seller has their account suspended. So....don't sell illegal stuff!
further selling offers will be removed.

I assumed it was a trade offer, rather than uwe trying to sell it. I'd never buy live recordings. Anyway, I take your point about PMs.
