Barry's shared a couple of photos on Twitter from the studios where Mogwai started recording a new album this week. Tony Doogan and Dave Fridmann appear to be involved. www.vadarecordingstudios.com/

Me too, reminds me of some of the stuff Stanley Donwood's done for Radiohead. Can't wait for Thursday!

Just played it a couple of times. Really like it. Me too, nice catchy refrain. Some belting song titles on the album, wish it was out sooner!

Ritchie must be someone misremembering Richie Sambora?! Really like the single- took a couple of plays but it's lovely (as is the production and artwork). Pre-ordered

Have gone for the Deluxe CD pre-order. The Deluxe Vinyl Boxset doesn't appear to include a digital version of the demos.
Need to spend some more time with the new track. Love the New Order bass.

Sorry to be the lone voice of dissent, but what a disappointingly bland track. It's 'White Noise' part 2, which is to say instrumental Coldplay. It is destined to soundtrack any number of BBC4 documentaries - if they're lucky, it'll pop up on the next David Attenborough doc. I understand the band think it is 'mature' to slather their music in generic (and embarrassingly basic) synths and programming, but they end up sounding like any number of other bands who also have a rudimentary synth set up and a lack of ideas. I know they don't want to make another Come On Die Young, and good on them for evolving, but this has been their wheelhouse for at least a decade now.
It's a rigid template. We'll get an instrumental Coldplay song or two (White Noise, Coolverine, Dry Fantasy), we'll get the 5 minute rager (Glasgow Mega Snake, Batcat, Old Poisons), we'll get one or two vocal songs that plod along, and the rest will be mood pieces indistinguishable from their soundtrack work.
I'm not saying we need more quiet/loud rock stuff - in fact, they never recorded many songs in that mode in the first place, I suspect because it only really works live, and even then there are diminishing returns. But go back and listen to their early EPs, especially the quieter ones - there's a commitment there to negative space, to not crowding everything with over-production and gimmicks. I'll give this new album a listen, but I fully expect it to be essentially indistinguishable from the last few. Maybe time to call it a day.

I would say if you are looking at things that way then maybe it's best to walk away from them. I really like the new track (took a few listens but then again they always do). They can't be expected to reinvent the wheel each time and personally the fact that they released 9 studio albums (?!) and pretty much all of them are solid is pretty rare. ECS was the first album of theirs that didn't fully do it for me but once again that's 9 albums in and my personal taste. If they walked away it would be a huge loss. I remember hearing Remurdered for the first time and being shocked it was the same band. There will be surprises on this new album for sure

If I'm honest I was a bit underwhelmed when I first heard 'Dry Fantasy' but it's really grown on me. They seem to put out their more 'palatable' songs as lead singles which I can understand although to this day I still find 'Coolverine' bland. Loved ECS though and can't wait for this one. I guess they're just doing what they love and we're all along for the ride Sorry to be the lone voice of dissent, but what a disappointingly bland track. Track previews are up on iTunes, at least in the US, and I have to say it sounds tremendous. Some of these songs are going to be incredible live. So that's me looking a bit silly then...
