post your thoughts surrounding the new album "mr. beast". it is due for release next february. the single "friend of the night" will be released on cd, 7 inch and as a digital download on january 30.
tracklist:
auto rock glasgow megasnake acid food travel is dangerous team handed friend of the night emergency trap folk death 95 i chose horses we're no' here
from matador records:
february signals the arrival of mogwai's new full length studio album, 'mr. beast.'
produced by longtime associate tony doogan and mogwai at castle of doom studio, it's nothing short of a monumental moment in mogwai's storied tenure. though there are still hints aplenty of the subtle beauty that adorned big chunks of 'rock action' and 'happy songs for happy people', there are an equal portion of headcrushers on this one that will leave you gasping for air. particularly if you've been wearing a plastic bag over your face (which we do not recommend, by the way).
their manager alan mcgee had this to say about the new album:
"the new mogwai record is being mixed at the moment. it is incredible. i think this is going to be a word of mouth record. i can't see how this is going to be played on radio one or radio two but you know what – it is probably the greatest art rock record that i've been involved in since my bloody valentine's loveless. its possibly better than loveless. it is the record that they have always threatened to make and unless something tragic goes on during the mixing process we will have an absolute masterpeice. for mogwai this is a creative career high ... sure other records might sell more – but they are going to be hard pressed to beat this record ... this is the record that they have always threatened to make.
it is a shockingly good record – fucking masterpiece."

It's getting quite rare that I get really excited about a new record coming out - which is pretty unusual given how many records I've bought recently. I've been chomping at the bit waiting for the debut album from Dialect for well over 12 months now. However, Mogwai's next album is definitely the one for 2006 for me.
I've read Alan McGee's comments before - is it the same guy who unleashed Oasis (spit!) on us? If it is, and the Mogwai record is as good as he says it is, I might just have to forgive him.
Do you think the band will let us suggest titles, like they did for "Happy Songs For Happy People"? I'm sure we can think of a few pearls!

i have to say i'm quite excited about the new album and tour. last year's shows (on curiosa off-nights) rekindled my interest in the band (not that i wasn't listening to them or whatever anyway). after those shows i wanted to see them again/hear some new material, but after that it was just nothing. so now it's been well over a year now and i'm still waiting. i'm going to be all over the next tour.

I'm probably gonna hold my breath until this record comes out. I will see to it that my family holds the members of Mogwai personally accountable for my death.

but i like "glower of a cat", can't they find a throwaway song and call it that? i like "glasgow megasnake", i bet there's five thousand layers of sick distorted guitars dipped in acid on it. which i love.

To be honest, my interest in Mogwai has been dwindling over the past two albums. I'll still rush to get a copy of the new album, but I think I've accepted I'm an "early Mogwai" fan. The first three albums (Ten Rapid, Young Team, Cody) stand out for me, whereas I rarely listen to Rock Action or Happy Songs thesedays. The quality of their EP/b-sides/remixes since 'my father..' has been weak, as well.
Hopefully they'll surprise me with the new album, but I've begun to wonder have I heard everything Mogwai has to offer? Can Mogwai take me anywhere new, musically?
All in my opinion, of course. Mogwai are still in the top 5% of bands I've ever ever heard, but they've been losing my interest recently.
(Edited to add: I think there's only been four bands I've been utterly devoted to - bands I had to have everything they've recorded, track down live recordings etc. The first was Crowded House, then Spiritualized, I then switched to Mogwai, but my current allegiance is with Low).

Its funny that. I was losing interest around Rock Action. That record just seemed so desperate to me and the shows were getting a bit samey. So when HSFHP came out I didnt know whether to get it or not as was worried it would further sully my feelings on the band.
Luckily I did buy it and it is def by far my favourite album of theirs, and the show I saw supporting it was one of their best (have seen them lots of times).
So interst is back to fever pitch, and cant wait for the new one.

I think that, apart from a few very notable songs ('Sine Wave', '2 Rights...', 'Killing All...' and 'I Know...') that I'm more of an old Mogwai fan too. and while I find Ten Rapid and Young Team very patchy, Come On Die Young is probably my favourite record, with EP+6 not all that far behind. that said, I think the best time I've ever seen them live was the most recent (the Slint ATP), so I think I'm probably more excited for a tour than I am for an album. since they're already coming to Dublin to play a small venue before the album release, they may well do what they did in 2003 (Village pre-release, Olympia post-release) and come back afterwards and play a bigger one a few months later as well. I can only hope.
that said, 'Glower of a Cat' was monstrously good, and the other new song I've heard live was pretty solid too, so my expectations of the new record have risen a little recently.

Surely Ratts of the Capital deserves to be on your list of newer songs. I reckon its the best thing they have done by a mile.

199.249.170.183/bbcom/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1001478393Scottish rock outfit Mogwai will unveil a new studio album, "Mr. Beast," March 6 via Matador. It's the follow-up to 2003's "Happy Songs for Happy People," which debuted at No. 9 on Billboard's Heatseekers chart and No. 13 on the Top Independent Albums tally. The band has sporadic shows on its schedule for the next few months, including Nov. 28-29 benefits in Edinburgh and Glasgow, respectively. Mogwai will also overtake London's ICA for a Jan. 10-14 run, with each night featuring as-yet-unannounced opening acts, DJs and films selected by the band.

www.tatapoum.net/info/?A=34A few sites (like the one above) seem to think 'Friend of the Night' EP and the album will be released on Chemikal Underground in Europe (or perhaps just France?). Is this right? The site above also thinks the release date for the EP is 31/01/06.

mr. beast... great title for an album. calm down, you don't have to be so enthusiastic! to me, it sounds like a manowar or iron maiden (mostly manowar) reference. here's a pic of dominic at mogwai.co.uk where he shows "the claw". correct me if i'm wrong but isn't that a manowar reference? as you might can see he's pictured wearing a 80's esque manowar t-shirt. so i figure "the claw" is something the members of manowar does as a ritual before every gig. i'm wondering what "the beast" looks like but on second thoughts i don't think i want to. there, i ruined another thread.

I think they should of gone with Glasgow Mega Snake as the album title. Best title ever.
I really didnt know the Alan McGee thing. A man who, after the dire Hurricane #1 split up, kept their singer on as a solo artist. He was unspeakably bad. And he REALLY loved Heavy Stereo. A lot.
But then he fluked it with a few others I guess.
Maybe he is a better manager than record label guy.

think the album title's alright. 'Mr Beast', silly at first but then it could be quite clever - intellectual, civilized adornings on an animal etc

I imagine the title will almost certainly change between now and release I doubt it, since isn't it now an "official" title, via press release and all that? Matador's saying it's official. I like the title. Sounds like a typical Mogwai-esque title. ;D

I think I'm the other way round to most of the people here! To my ears, the albums are progressively more to my taste (I won't say better) - I loved Happy Songs and yes, Ratts Of The Capital is maybe the best thing in the world ever. I know McGee's a one for hype, but it does sound exciting. He doesn't do everything right, but Loveless is good so he's not a complete write-off! He does a good indie club as well, so maybe label-supremo is lowest on his list of talents...

I heard "Travel is Dangerous" on some French radio stream online. It was totally badass. It was short though, so I'm thinking it may have been an edit.

thank you!
I'd like to say this sounds great, but it's hard to tell given the quality. the guitars/vocals are lovely, but everything below them is all slushy.
