haha! I do find it interesting though, how as fans of the band we can both come away with such different views. Out of interest, what would you class as the best Mogwai show you've seen?

The RAH gig was incredible, as was the Birmingham Sanctuary gig in 2003: www.youngteam.co.uk/brightlight/eng/gig211003.php

A couple of posts in the 'Manchester gig' thread which I thought looked like a good idea of a new thread - see above

I can't decide between RAH or QEH; I remember Glasgow Mega-Snake at the Albert Hall being immense, and the end of QEH was particularly awesome.
Apart from that, I remember enjoying the Astoria, but I don't remember much about it...

I think it was the 24th...twas a Friday, as far as I recall. It was my first Mogwai gig and I remember stoically withstanding the noise while my friend cowered with her hands over her ears...

Sept 20, 1999 www.youngteam.co.uk/brightlight/eng/gig200999.phpMy very first Mogwai show. I'd been waiting forever to see them live. I think it was their first gig in L.A. I had no idea what to expect or how loud they were going to. Mogwai Fear Satan was amazing. I love when they brought the music down so quietly. I almost had a heart attack when they kicked back in. I hadn't heard anything about their live shows so I didn't know they were going to kick back in so suddenly. That's one show that me and my friends still reminisce about. Ha ha ha ha.

Always hard to chose but if I had to, I would go for Ostia Antica in Rome in 2006. The beauty of the antique theatre, a warm night with a thick fog falling as the show was getting more and more intense; lights trying to pierce through it; close encounters impression. Magic. And then very recently, the Picture House in Edinburgh. Really nice videos going along with the songs (they put on some nice visuals after the horrible batcat animation). Long set made of beasts songs, enormous bass, immense sound. PHENOMENAL gig. What about opening another thread 'worst Mogwai gig you've ever seen'? if anybody here experienced that? or maybe disappointment or bad memories? Rob?

Anybody think last weeks Edinburgh show was one of the best.? Sounded pretty awesome to me, the sound was spot on. Nice touch with Luke playing also. It was my daughters first Mogwai gig, so that made it extra special. At 14, a fan for life!

Queen Elizabeth Hall, easy. First Mogwai gig I took my brother too, he's loved them ever since.
I also liked being sat down in comfy chairs, sipping a pint, rather than being surrounded by talking cunts all the way through barging past with 18 pints in their hands.

It's an amazing place. Honestly, I've never seen Mogwai play a truly awful show. I've seen them play on a number of occasions when they weren't as together as they might have been, particularly in mid-1997, but they were good enough that we kept going back. The shows I haven't enjoyed as much have mostly been down to issues not connected to the band's performance (e.g. Hammersmith Apollo 2008 - huge venue, rammed in like cattle, having to leave before the encore to get back to Euston) At the time, I made a number of public comments about having not enjoyed the Glastonbury 1999 show, which seem pretty petty in retrospect - I've certainly revised my opinion over the years.

Interesting, I would say there's only one horrible memory. It was back in 2001 in Toulouse, France at La Mounede. Hood was supporting. The sound was absolutely unbearable. Quite a lot of people left and I remember the bar staff wearing earmuffs which is ridiculous when it comes to this point. I was sitting just behind the sound guy (who did the sound for MUM at the time as well) and remember that I was very close to ask him gently to f*** off; feelings shared by a lot of people around us. I'd have been really happy to shove his glasses deep inside his throat at the time (even now actually) . And despite the absolutely amazing set the guys played at Le cafe de la danse in Paris in 2001, the stupid fight at the end doesn't remind like a nice memory. It's always been perfect since then though.

I saw the boys at the Roadhouse in Manchester in 98, which probs was the best single gig I've ever seen. Saying that, the 26/2 gig at the Academy was fantastic I thought. Had to register to say that

Well, I have currently only ever seen the band live once - at The Metropolis on May 3rd 2009. We drove up to Montreal from Halifax, Nova Scotia (12 hr. drive) and I had myself so worked up and so excited I felt like I was going to vomit up until the second song of their set. After that, I cried a little. The boyfriend stood behind me the entire time *as I'm almost midget short* and held my hand. Probably the most exciting and romantic night of my life! The only thing I was a little sad about was that I didn't get to hear them play Summer or Cody. But that was small potatoes considering... ha! Cannot wait to see the show in April!

Best gig: The Plug in Sheffield in 2007. Small venue, low ceiling, great atmosphere, really intense MFS to close the encore

For me the Whirlyball shows in Atlanta were the best overall experience - I flew in, checked into my hotel 10 minutes away from the venue (which seemed to be about 200 capacity, maybe even less!), and made my way over to the venue just in time for the show to start. Surprisingly the sound wasn't the greatest - I think the space was actually too small for a mogwai show Got to hang out with the band a little bit after the show even. Then, got to do it all over again the next afternoon! A truely awesome weekend.

QEH gig would top the list, with RAH a close second.

The Sheffield Plug one was good actually. I remember a moron near me (who talked through out, obviously) was shouting "You can't call music. This is fucking shit. I don't care what you say, this isn't real music" during Fear Satan. He then left! Really strange outburst, especially as it came at the end of the show, but I still laugh to think of him shouting "this isn't real music."

Mine is actually the first time I saw them in Copenhagen, Denmark (date 25th nov 2001). Not that the other times was bad or so. It was on the same day Celtic had beaten Rangers so 3 out 5 members in the band wore Celtic jerseys. And this was the only time I didn't wore earplugs. Everything was very loud and you can't really describe how loud MFMK was in words. The venue was half full, mostly because of it was on a sunday and the gig ended about 10:20 pm (a curfew thingie perhaps).

another vote for the 24th October 2003 Astoria, London gig. www.youngteam.co.uk/brightlight/eng/gig241003.phpwas the 2nd time i'd seen them (after the night before) and it was absolutely epic. I stood in front of the sound board - they had this little lip running all the way along the front of the booth about 5-10cm above the ground, so stannding on that you had an uninterrupted view of the entire stage. i'm 6"3 so not short, but that extra bit made all the difference. the sound of the band that night was immense. had to put my finger in my ears at the end of mfmk cause it was just so loud. the astoria was such a good venue, and the band seemed to really enjoy it as well. stuart said shortly afterwards that the band considered it one of their best shows for several years, so i could understand it. if only rob's minidisc's hadn't self destructed. as for 2nd place on my list, the trivoli, brisbane, australia 3rd march 2009. shouted myself a trip to aus for 2 gigs for my 30th birthday. www.youngteam.co.uk/brightlight/eng/gig030309.phpthis gig made it all worth it. pity the 2nd show i went too (melbourne march 5th 2009) was terrible. band great, crowd atrocious. to all those people complaining about london crowds, just be glad you don't live in melbourne.

Tough question. Of the 17 times i've seen them a few really stand out - Oxford 2003, Cambridge Junction 2006, Reading festivals 1998/2001, RAH 2006 and Manchester 2008. However the one which will stay with me to the grave has to be Brixton 2001. Unreal volume, people passing out left right and centre and a classic setlist. It was all a bit clockwork orange -http://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTHOCB6hBueDMF4UaZQjjcMExKqWeUdRIkuaXgCXjfbL5IJkA4xeg

I'd have to go for the Astoria gigs in 2003 as well. I used to go clubbing there 10+ years before (bit of an old raver I'm afraid) & remembered the sound used to be amazing in there (no, it wasn't the chemicals) & this was by far the best experience I'd ever had there. They blew me away that night! Walking out I had the image of the guy in the old Maxell tapes advert in my head! The first night was immense but I remember the 2nd night being a little quieter (people wise) which made it feel a bit more selective. 2nd to that would be a draw between RAH (loved the lighting rig) & QEH. I really liked the ICA gigs too!
