A Mogwai record in the top 10 album chart, never thought I'd see that if I'm honest. That's fantastic news. Congratulations all.

I'm very happy for them...good musicians and they seem very good guys.Congratulations!!! Anyway , their sound came to "mainstream" listeners and i have to admit that i'm little bit jealous.

I finally received my box set yesterday! It's so lovely! Definitely worth the wait.
The coloured vinyl is perfect and the bonus tracks are great. The photo book is everything I thought it would be.
It's like I'm having Christmas all over again:)

Anybody else got a "noisy" vinyl? I bought the £30 t-shirt/vinyl combo from the Sandbag site, so it's not coloured vinyl. Just seems so crackly, compared to other new vinyls I've received in the last few months. Wondered if I got a defective one??

I think my replacement copy of the LP is waiting for me at the local Royal Mail depot. I'll check that one just as closely, I think.

I'm in the process of compiling Rave Tapes info for Brightlight www.youngteam.co.uk/brightlight/eng/ravetapes.phpIt's a long way from finished at the moment. That Steve Gullick photo of the working titles whiteboard in the studio - Stuart's ID'd some of them - thank you Stuart. There are several which are bleedin' obvious but I've included them anyway. Hexon Bogon - Hexon Bogon Chapel - The Lord Is Out Of Control Blang - unreleased Mod 11 Mod 8 Ding - Die 1 Dislike! Lady Assassin - Blues Hour Come Back Two Bad Magician 3 - Bad Magician 3 Bad Magician 4 Shaun Ryder Prison - unreleased Master Card - Master Card Security Wound - scrapped? Juno Song - No Medicine For Regret Mbika Jay Z - Remurdered Mod 3 Mod 4 I think it says Security Wound, could be Security Would? So that leaves the following not yet identified: Heard About You Last Night Simon Ferocious Repelish Deesh Tell Everybody That I Love Them And the following possible working titles: Mod 11 Mod 8 Come Back Two Bad Magician 4 Mbika Mod 3 Mod 4 Presumably meaning there's something like four songs from the Rave Tapes sessions unreleased. Anyone want to play 'match the working title to the song?'. I can feel a competition coming on here.

Bad Magician 3 is pretty great! I can see why it was left off the album, it doesn't really fit and its pretty retro Mogwai. But I hope it finds its way onto the setlists at some point.

So is the charting of the album due to it doing better than previous records or due to depressed record industry sales meaning it doesn't take many records being sold to get into the charts?
I guess I'm just surprised if it's entirely the former. While I think it is a great album, not sure I would have picked it as the one to make the band "rich and famous."

January is generally a quiet month for new releases, but I'm pleased that it's a good showing. Perhaps shops will place Mogwai records on prominent display now.

There's definitely a pattern of US reviews being worse than UK reviews. Here's another stinker: www.undertheradarmag.com/reviews/rave_tapes/"Sadly, post-rock heroes Mogwai continue to plod along by either replicating their former triumphs in a less effective, less effecting, and generally sheeny-shinier manner or by loafing around with the cack-handed utilization of "progressive" electronic elements." "half-heartedly fumbling for a new direction down the back of Errors' couch" "Stuart Braithwaite's cheerless vocals" "Rave Tapes makes a compelling case for Mogwai to abandon studio albums altogether"

Seriously? Have these people listened to the record more than once before writing this drivel?
Bah.

There is a 24 bit/96 kHz version of 'Rave Tapes' available at hdtracks.com. I'll be getting this, if only just to support the initiative.....even though I only have the means to listen to it via computer for now. Comes at an opportune time for me as well, seeing as I haven't yet managed to get out of the house to a record store to grab the LP. Still might get it later anyway. Not sure how much 24/96 appeals to most 'gwai fans, though. I'm very interested to hear it, to see if it makes an audible difference.

After 2 months i have to admit that rave tapes is disapperead from my listening... this album is the really less good of whole Mogwai's discography, there isn't the epic one and there are 2 songs very flat (Repelish...Master Card).

I know it's a bit harsh but "half-heartedly fumbling for a new direction down the back of Errors' couch" is right on the money, IMO.

I disagree! bloomin love No Medicine for Regret, Deesh, Hexon Bogon, Remurdered... I've not taken the CD out of the player in my car yet. I think it does need to be listened to loud, but that's probably no different to any Mogwai album.

In my opinion they do. Remurdered particularly is amazing live I thought Deesh was great live too. The last four songs in particular are very much still 'doing it for me'. Remurdered is also great.

I know it's a bit harsh but "half-heartedly fumbling for a new direction down the back of Errors' couch" is right on the money, IMO. Do you refer to the individual songs on "Rave Tapes" or to the songs in the context of the album? From my point of view, "Rave Tapes" works extremely well as an album (with the exception of "Repelish" as the deliberate odd man out). It continues the development that Mogwai have taken since the release of HWNDBYW. Yes, it's definitely more electronic than any of its predecessors, the songs are quite short compared to earlier Mogwai songs and the quiet / loud contrast is not as striking as it used to be. But there's something like a common thread or vibe running through the new album. I wouldn't necessarily say that Mogwai sound a lot like Errors on "Rave Tapes". I assume they have just integrated more of their various musical influences on this album than ever before (the krautrock influences in particular are quite obvious and Rob had already outlined the similarities to Telstar Ponies in "Blues Hour"). If I had to draw some parallels to the recent musical development of any other of my favourite bands, it would be this one: The other thing is how the new songs work individually when played back to back with the songs from Mogwai's extensive back catalogue (e.g. in the context of the live show). So far, I've only seen one show on this tour. My personal impression is that, now, there's rather some quiet / loud contrast between the old stuff and the new songs. And that might not always work in favour of the new off "Rave Tapes". The crowd did appreciate many of the new songs - but in fact they were keen on hearing the old 10+ minutes long classics. (Let's face the truth: Nowadays it's highly unlikely that one gets to hear MFS, Xmas Steps, Like Herod, Ex-Cowboy and MFMK all within just one set. And, no, shouting one's requests at the band during the quiet parts of the songs doesn't really help either as many seasoned Mogwai fans can affirm.)
