I would class the proper albums to be Young Team, CODY, Rock Action and HSFHP. I have the EPs individually and not as the album release so I don't include EP+6 or 10 Rapid for that matter as it is a compilation of the early singles.
I love so many tracks it is untrue. Mogwai Fear Satan is my favourite track of all time by anyone but I think the live version blows the studio version away now. Similarly the new live version of Yes, I am long way from home is far better than the recorded version. Second best I reckon.
CODY as I've said before has some great songs on it but just drags a bit and Fridmann's production still spoils it somewhat for me. Get rid of Waltz, the re-recorded Helps both Ways which is pants compared with the original, Oh! How the Dogs stack up and the version of Ex-Cowboy on it and it would be better. I was really disappointed by the version of Ex-Cowboy on it. The Peel session version is in my top 3 Peel session tracks ever and IMO it and the live version blows the CODY one out of the water.
Rock Action - awesome! Only weeker track is Take me Somewhere Nice, other than that I think it works great and the length suits the album really well.
HSFHP - just mind blowing. More variety, great songs, amazing production, perfect length = album of the year. And the songs work superbly live! I like the advent of aspects of electronica into the sound over the years. Gives them more directions to go in.
There, got it all off my chest. Oh and Dead Pig just that!

and IMO it and the live version blows the CODY one out of the water. in all fairness i think most live versions blow studio recordings out of the water

HSFHP There are much better songs on the other album's, but as a whole HSFHP is absolutly brilliant. Except for that fifth song, which is absolute shit.

"Rock Action - awesome! Only weeker track is Take me Somewhere Nice, other than that I think it works great and the length suits the album really well." What! what about 'IO Sleep', 'robot chant', 'secret pint', 'dial:revenge' ?? Are they awesome? With the length of RA being so short, could they afford to have these four songs on it? It should have been an EP..And it should no way be level on this Poll!!

Not amazing tracks that I would put on a compilation for example but make the album work IMO. Any way, Dial:Revenge is an amazing song. A really beauty, in the same way the Super Furries Mwng is a fucking great record...

too right Dial: Revenge is an amazing song.
HSFHP has some very good songs on it (hunted, ratts, i know you are, flies) but I find most of the rest of the tracks are a bit weak and let the album down, whereas I don't think there's a weak song on Rock Action.
Also, agreed that Mwng is a brilliant album

No, no, no. If only Fridmann produced HSFHP it would be perfect, but it doesn't really matter, it's still unbelievably great. Rock Action is definitely their best, so what if it has only 8 songs that doesn't mean anything. CODY comes in second but definitely not that far behind.

hmmm... I'd probably say: 1. Rock Action 2. MYT 3. HSFHP 4. Cody I don't really count the compilations as albums

each album has their positives but i think as a whole cody is far superior. its the sort of album you have to listen from start to end whereas the others i do find myself skipping the odd track now and then.

my opinion:
1. ten rapid (extremely underrated...) 2. rock action 3. young team or cody
I think both cody and hsfhp (a very disappointing album) could have turned out better if they were differently produced. next time they should get kevin shields...

Happy Songs For Happy People is the best one, very cohesive and mature, though I'll always have a soft spot for Rock Action, as that's the album that turned me onto the band.
I agree with Rob and several others about Fridmann's production on CODY, wouldn't it have been nice if it would've been Tony Doogan behind the board instead!
I also agree that Ten Rapid is very underrated, and like someone else who mentioned it, I'm just not into Young Team at all.

happy songs for me, no question. i still get a buzz off of it from every listen.
slightly off topic, but it's also the album with which i've been able to convert the most people to the glory of the 'gwai.

Got to be Young Team
Fear Satan is still their best ever track

Someone earlier said 'get rid of Waltz'. Are you serious? That's incredible. It's a perfect song. 'Waltz' and 'Happiness' next to each other is, for me, the centrepiece of the album and the highlight of Mogwai's studio recordings. Agree with the person who said CODY is their only great album as well. Young Team has incredible bursts, Rock Action and HSFHP are, I think, pretty average... But then most people seem to like those two albums more than the others, so what do I know

Hi
yesterday I would have said.. HSFHP. Today? I downloaded (legally guvnor, as you can't get any Mogwai in the cultural desert that is Bolton) EP+6 to complete my collection.
The verdict?. Awesome.."Small Children" and "Stereodee" are mighty but "Burn Girl"completely blew me away..
So after some 10 plays today... EP+6 it is then....(today).

i voted for young team simply because in this instance the sum of the parts if greater than the whole of happy songs. with songs like fear satan, tracy, yes i am & r u still into it, it is nigh impossible to beat. sure, radar maker is the most horrible song in the entire world and i hate it more than any song ever written, but thats the great thing about cd's - i can skip it.. so while happy songs is a more consistent album, it doesn't meet the birlliance of young team.
next i'd put ep+6 actually, even though technically it shouldn't count.
cody after that - great album, but i'd have cut out a few of the tracks to be honest - too long and boring in the 2nd half of the first half.
ten rapid next - is a collection of great songs, but certainly show they're still learning and all the rest.
rock action last for me - it's pretty dire. the worst 'gwai effort by a country mile. only redeeming feature is the great drum sound when they kick in on 2 rights make 1 wrong.

Cody boring? What?
I can maybe understand why some would say it is long, the puff daddy song at the end is a bind but I have always turned off by then. I am always bemused by the lack of love for CODY, it is a startling album and remains the greatest thing Mogwai have ever done, and I doubt they will be able to sustain a sound on an album as well as they did with it The songs on CODY belong on CODY, the sound is unmistakable. If you remove Puff Daddy, helps both ways, and oh how the dogs stack up, you are left with eight songs of such quality that no other Mogwai album comes close to. CODY sounds like no other record, it inhabits such beautiful extremes, the delicay of Walty for Aidan and May nothing, through to the unbearably intense ex cowboy and the stomping bass of XMas steps. It demands your full attention, like all great music should do. Withough doubt their best..Has any other Mogwai got eight songs as good as this on it??? CODY is the album that makes Mogwai great.
1.Punk rock 2. Cody 4. Year 2000 non compliant cardia 5. Kappa 6. Waltz for Aidan 7. May nothing but happiness come through your door 9. Ex cowboy 10. Chocky 11. Christmas steps

I've voted for Happy Songs. HSFHP is just an excellent experience every time i listen to the album! It works so good as an album.
2. Rock Action -- Very nice songs and happy songs. My favorite on the album is definately "Take Me Somewhere Nice", just damn great.
3. Young Team -- Lovely rocking!
4. Ten Rapid -- A collection of very catchy track!
5. Come On Die Young -- Too long and a little boring, though the track are very good!

Has to be Come on Die Young. Great art succeeds in capturing a feeling and sustaining it. Listen to CODY at 3am while driving along the Pennsylvania (where I believe the album was recorded) turnpike and you will know what I mean. Somewhere near the exit for "Cranberry" it will all set in.

I've only heard EP + 6, Ten Rapid, Happy Songs, and Young Team. Of these, I'd probably choose Young Team, but as I've said, I haven't heard everything they've done.

to my opinion, every mogwai album i own is great but i've noticed that whenever i go back home for the weekend, i always take young team and ep+2. i know that last one doesn't count, but it's got burn girl prom queen and stanley kubrick on it. and yt boasts summer, tracy, RU and mogwai fear satan. haven't got cody yet.
