You don't really have to prevent your song being used in an advert because the company always has to ask. If they don't ask they get sued so it's only a very stupid company that would do that. What about TV though. Do they have to ask? The BBC don't have to ask and neither does anyone using music for a trailer it seems. They need permission to use our music for any other TV use. I think someone earlier asked if we'd ever said no. Twice. 1st for a show about the greatest English footballers of all time (they used it anyway!) and for that show about Jodie Marsh that was on MTV. SB

What did you think of the MBV show at the Barras? How did it compare to the last one in the early 90s?

What's the story of Brendan O'Hare writing "With Portfolio" on a piano at the Colchester Arts Centre in 1997?

I was just wondering something... The precipice is the last song on the forthcoming album but you open your new gigs with it...Any reason for that?

Guys,
Around the time of 'Young Team', i remember reading a live review (can't recall whether NME or Melody Maker) and it said that you had included a cover of 'Twenty Four Hours' by Joy Division in the set. Having trawled through the BL gig history, i can't find any mention of it. Have i totally made this up in my over active mind or did i miss it???I only ask as it's my favourite JD song and would love to hear a Mogwai version.

re: the submitted video footage not being so great,
this isn't so bad, is it?
(obviously the compression from putting it on youtube has made it look not as good), but i feel like i've gotten some decent footage over the years!
(edited to add a direct link to view in 'high quality')

i've got two angles of footage from that show. my friends were on the level above the balcony (an area that in the winter used to be used for a coat check) with a much nicer camera than mine. the problem is that theirs was a better quality lens and also widescreen. mine is not. my angle was from the left side of the stage on the balcony. i'm not about to try to get up close with a hand-held camera at any show. but yeah, stuart's birthday. it was mentioned later in the show.
the main problem with the camera i've been using is that it's not terribly great in low-light settings. the video from the whirlyball shows is just green/red or whatever because there was basically no light in the venue, no 'light show' on the stage (not that that really bothers me) and there was no change in the lights. it was hard to really get a clear picture on anyone other than stuart at those shows.
i've gotta just try to hurry and get the rest of this stuff edited, at least before the next tour. i've been slacking too much/too long.
anyway, it is possible to get some decent audience video footage. people just have to be organized and motivated. i paid for 4 tickets for that show to get the help i needed to run 2 cameras + separate audio. most of the time i'm going solo and don't even have the option of finding people to help out.

Hey guys,
I don't know if you're still active in this thread, but I've got two things I'm wondering about
1) I always get a kick out of the song titles. Are there any that have any particularly good stories behind them?
2) Do you guys think with the new ways people are independently getting music out to the fans and seeing all of the profit for it (i.e. Radiohead, Nine Inch Nails) that you'll change the way you put your music out? I've read your rant on In Rainbows, Stuart, and you seemed to be supportive of that kind of distribution method, and given the fact that you guys pretty much run your own affairs with Rock Action, you have the luxury of being a little more executive in that kind of decision.
I'll be seeing you guys in New York this September and hopefully doing a live feature on it for Lost at Sea. Thanks for making music that has a little bit of heart in it.
- Dave

Tell me a few ones and i'll have a wee go explaining them. 2 I am a big fan of what Trent and to a lesser extent Radiohead have done (Radiohead having utilized a traditional label to distribute the physical release) as i think it really empowers musicians. It is a complex issue though as i still think that there is a role for labels to help artists get their music heard when they're starting out as this generally requires the type of investment that bands cannot afford. Most bands can barely afford crisps on their first tours. As far as we are concerned we are not in the same position as either of the bands you mentioned as we are up to the release of The Hawk Is Howling under contract to PIAS and how our records are released is not up to us as PIAS own the recordings. In the future however i'm sure we will consider alternative methods of releasing our records. We'll probably "do a Radiohead" in 2011. Always a wee bit behind the zeitgeist, i only just got into The Might Boosh for goodness sakes! SB

Hey, here's a not quite Mogwai related question. My younger brother is arriving in Glasgow in a few days, I haven't been there in a few years and I've searched around for some cool gigs etc. for him to check, but I'm obviously not up on what's going on (I hear James Blackshaw is playing next week...other than that I don't know much)...so any gigs or art openings or other intersting things happening in the next couple weeks taht you'd recommend to a wandering young man from the canadian prairies who's never been to Scotland before?
and that also reminds me, I really have to thank you fellas for coming to Calgary, me and a bunch of drove from Saskatoon to see you (and wire/tren brothers/etc.etc), but really you guys stole the show and I've been waiting for nearly a decade to see you and it was entirely as wonderful as I'd hoped, so thanks.

I'm curious about "The Sun Smells Too Loud", "You Don't Know Jesus", "Burn Girl Prom Queen", and "I Chose Horses". I've actually heard some pretty far-fetched rumors for "Horses". The Sun Smells Too Loud: this came from a conversation between Barry and me during one of (many) car rides to rehearsal. I think we were trying to come up with the most random sentence we could think of. You Don't Know Jesus: John said this to me during a very drunken conversation that had somehow to turned to religion. His point was that i was brought up in an atheist household. Burn Girl Prom Queen: This was a headline in the weekly word news. We got a lot of song names from that publication. I Chose Horses: This was a quote from Alan Rough who is an old goal keeper (Scotland, Celtic, Partick Thistle) on the frankly terrible Real Radio football phone in. He was asked why he hadn't gone in to coaching and he replied "some players turn to management, i chose horses". This amused us immensely. SB

Year 2K Non Compliant Cardia: This was us making mirth in highly poor taste of the media rumour that pacemakers would all stop at the turn of the last century. It was Martins idea. SB

Katrien: Name of the girl working at a festival who asked us to fill in the PRS form that the then unnamed song was being performed at (Pukkelpop?) Ithica 27/9: I think we stuck a pin in an encyclopedia. Twice. SB
