It was weird not being up front, but it did sound amazing from up there. We were in the balcony as well, and it sounded wonderful. A bit boomy in the bottom end, but I think that was a general symptom of the room, and would have occurred nearly everywhere. One thing I've really learned to appreciate - especially after the past 3 times seeing them, is that the front of house mix is ideal, and definitive. I used to always want to be in the middle, toward the front to really feel the onslaught, but I noticed that the definition was almost lacking, and keyboard stuff was way too low, or almost inaudible. The past two shows I've been to this year have really illustrated this. In Edinburgh we started on the floor, near the sound desk, and after Rano Pano it was evident to me that the keys were being buried by the direct blast of the amps. We ended up on the balcony, and I was amazed at the clarity of the mix, not to mention the volume being perfectly loud and resonant. In Montreal, we viewed the whole show from the balcony, and it was loud, clear, and glorious! So yeah, my lesson is that front of house mix makes the difference with Mogwai today!

Provided the soundperson is any good, the best mix will always be on the line directly between the sounddesk and the stage, and usually closer to the desk than the stage.
Presumably the balcony in Montreal was above the sounddesk. If you were fairly central on the balcony, I'm not surprised it sounded good.

Hit the nail on the head with that one, Rob. the balcony in L Olypmia is pretty much directly over the sound board, which is why we chose to sit there. We would have been on the floor, in the same general spot, but my standing under 5 feet tall would not have made for shitty visual experience. haha!

Sorry Vancouver fans. Looks like you are missing Mogwai on this tour. Hopefully their visa issues are sorted out for the fall. From what Stuart says on the KEXP show, it sounds like the US is giving them Visa problems, not Canada. Apparently their work Visa only allow them to come into the US one time. So they can't cross back and forth from Canada to US, back to Canada and then back to US again. I bet that is something their tour manager should have worked out beforehand, unless the security was recently stepped up with the recent events in Pakistan. My bet is Dom's beard. If they shaved and put on some weight this probably wouldn't have happened (Ha Ha). I'm looking forward to the Dallas show this Sunday! I'll miss you Martin!

From piecing together various sources, I'd guess the problem stems from slow work by US immigration.
It would never have happened if Mogwai's tour manager had been in charge, believe me.

Liam Finn had a problem that was kind of similar. He lost his passport, got a new one but due to the immense slowness of US immigration there was no way he could get a visa and be in Canada on time. So he also had to cancel. This also happened just a month ago.

Soooo.. just wondering if there's a speck of a chance that an Australian side show will be announced. Otherwise I will have to fork out $500 to go to Splendour in the Grass, which I am crazy enough to do just for Mogwai but for obvious reasons would prefer not to.

I hate shift work, you never know what's going on in the world. Alright, Splendour and a quarter of a fortnight's wages it is. I can't not see them when they're playing in my state.

Autumn schedule speculation:
late September/early October: USA, Canada, Mexico some dates confirmed already inc. Mexico City on 15th Oct
European tour in late October/November first show confirmed - Leipzig, 1st November
UK tour (please, please, please) in December, finishing in Glasgow on 22nd Dec
It wouldn't surprise me to see a quick sprint to Japan in there somewhere too, although they may save this to combine with the mooted Australian dates in early 2012

This is the sort of post that gets my suspiscion radar going. Is that a genuine endorsed-by-the-band presale page? Or are we being street-teamed here? *Update - seems this is a legitimate enterprise - thanks Craig*

Excellent show yesterday at the Traumzeit festival. Some epic stuff like Xmas Steps and Auto Rock, but mostly it was a concise festival orientated set. Which was perfect! Also the venue was an old (steel?) factory which, due to very nice light effects, seemed to encompass beauty and massiveness. Very appropriate for a Mogwai gig. Would love to see a full show at the venue sometime.
Third time I've seen the Gwai this year and I wouldn't mind seeing them a few times more. They never disappoint.

I was talking to Stuart during the Errors set at the San Diego show (after following them down the coast) bemoaning the lack of Australasian action recently (I flew over from NZ to see them) and he said they were planning on playing some Australian and NZ shows in Jan-Feb next year. Seems to fit with the other rumours I've seen elsewhere.
After my joy at this I realised I'm not going to be in the country at the time but hey.

No Canadian dates for fall tour - I guess they wanted to avoid extra visa hassles this time out? Hope some get added after NJ date

No Canadian dates for fall tour - I guess they wanted to avoid extra visa hassles this time out? Hope some get added after NJ date Well, they've only announced the make-up dates, a festival, and a show in Mexico City a couple weeks later, right? I'd think they must be doing something in NA between 10/2 and 10/15. My fingers are still crossed for Toronto again. Or at least Buffalo? Please? I know I'm spoiled, but a Toronto show at Lee's or QE Theatre would be great as a change of pace.

Hmm, i guess you're right - seemed like a full fall tour announcement.
Don't think they will be playing Lee's again unfortunately - they seem to have settled on the Phoenix, which is probably the best all things considered - wouldn't want to see them at kool haus or sound academy for example. If the new EP is more mellow it would be awesome for them to play a sit down show at Massey Hall

Yeah, I actually think the Phoenix is a very good venue for them. I was just thinking that since they just played here, maybe a smaller show at Lee's with a bit higher ticket price might be an idea. And QE Theatre would be amazing, although I just looked and it actually has a higher capacity than the Phoenix, not lower like I was thinking. I saw Sakamoto Ryuichi there last year and it was great. Whatever, I'm sure the plans have already been made for that two weeks. I'm just hoping to see them, with Martin behind the kit, anywhere at all.

Seeing them at Lee's in 2002 (back when they were still playing melt-your-face-off loud) was a highlight for me for sure. Luckily that show was taped for CBC - I still listen to the 2 rights recording all the time.

I hope this is the right place for this post, but I got an email through today from the designer/ illustrator/ poster maker Jason Munn. One of his recent posters is from Mogwai's postponed gig at Webster Hall in April for those who are interested! "I have just added the 2011 Rolling Roadshow posters to my site. My copies are Artist Proofs with an edition of 30 each - less than 20 of each are available through my site. To purchase the posters follow the link" jasonmunn.com/poster.php?name=Mogwai

Last night in Bexhill was rather wonderful, apart from the odd technical glitch (and an idiot heckler!!). Errors were excellent too, and it's dawning on me that they could be more successful than they are presently. They have some damn fine tunes. Make sure you see them.
Mogwai's set (if memory serves me well....): White Noise Rano Pano (still not one of my favourites, but live it is thunderous) I'm Jim Morrison, I'm Dead Death Rays Cody (Stuart's vocal was lovely) Letters to the Metro (a beautiful tune) Christmas Steps (too much chattering from people nearby almost ruined the build-up for me, but the loud section was superb) How to be a Werewolf (I'm not sure I've got this one right) San Pedro 2 Rights Make 1 Wrong Mexican Grand Prix Batcat -------------------------------------- My Father My King
A great show. I'm feeling rather stupid hat I didn't buy one of the screen print posters, because they were lovely. Really kicking myself about it.

Yep, that was a great show, excellent to hear Xmas Steps, and where I was standing near the speaker there was practically no chatter at all. Indeed Stuart said something along the lines that it was a nice change to play a show where people actually wanted to listen to the music. At least one of the idiot hecklers got thrown out, because I met him in the pub afterwards (still grumbling - tough). San Pedro and Rano Pano have turned into complete monsters now. My second show on this tour, both times Stuart has worn his orange Melt Banana t-shirt, and both times MFMK has been the encore Stuart's guitar at the end
