am actually on my days off now....11am here. -0.2 degrees outside. brrr. speaking of which, i think it's time for a beer...hehe. don't you have a child to look after?! we're enjoying the UK's standard diet of summer temperatures - "can we be bothered to get over 20 degrees today? naaaah. bit of rain for good luck? oh, go on then"

Your Tramway show a while back was amazingly loud; especially during Herod and Ithica; enough so to leave a lovely ringing in my ears well into the next day. Are you seriously suggesting your early shows were louder than that?! I remember meeting you that night. We have played shows MUCH louder than that. That gig in Auckland was unbelievably loud and there have been so many gigs where the stage has been shaking so much it has tickled my feet. In retrospect i don't think being stupidly loud added much at all but it was good fun. SB It was quite noticeable that the volume was a notch down at shows in 2003 and since, particularly compared to 1999 and 2001. Although I do remember having to move to the back of the venue during MFMK in Oxford 2003 as my head was hurting.

hey stuart, nice one for doing a q+a, just wondering about the berny mcgurk documentary 'take me somewhere nice', is there any plans for this to see the light of day and if not, why? just curious cus i know lots of people would bite a thumb off to see it (a guy i went to college with said he saw a screening of it once but then again he could have been talking shite), from the clips on the happy songs epk it looks good, cheers Benny was in touch recently asking us about this and the decision we came to was to use it as part of a future dvd release. Whenever that happens. SB

stuart, do you remember this interview: (at 4:15) ...where you and barry talk about "rock action" outtakes that was better than the songs on "rock action. what's the current status of those songs and will they future on the 10th anniversay of "rock action" as an extra cd? and one more question, what's your opinion of this forum? cheers. I remember doing that interview. There were loads of great songs that we recorded for Rock Action that didn't make the record. I'm sure we'll do something with them in the future though i'm not sure what. There is definitely another albums worth of songs only some of which have been heard. This forum is fine, everyone seems quite nice. SB

I'm gonna feel a bit of a fanboy for asking a question but anyway... with a vast back catalogue, how do you decide what to put in the setlists? Do you consciously try and pick songs from across albums or do you just play whatever you feel like? Also, no Helicon 1/MFS etc... for a while, do you get bored of playing these old long songs or do you just want to keep it constantly fresh? Anyway, cheers a lot for surprising me whenever I've seen you with the setlists, I think I've seen different openers/closers at every gig I've seen you at! Its not hard really. We just practice a load of songs before we go on tour and choose 12 or so before each show. I reckon you've been quite lucky i think, quite often the setlists are similar. SB

do you guys record many/any of your shows from the soundboard? is listening to live recordings of your own shows something that interests you at all?

SB Stuart, Having seen quite a few mogwai shows over the years, I've never found the setlists repetitive. In fact I'd go so far as to say that it would be a struggle to find two that are identical (the only exception that springs to mind is the two shows in Iceland in 2001). No doubt someone will prove me wrong in very short order. From your perspective, it may appear that you're playing the same songs repeatedly over a long period of time, but the vast majority of your audience only get to see you once or twice a year (if that - before einzack chips in) and by the time you come back, the setlists have moved on.

You seem to have taken to answering questions with gusto, Stuart! I was wondering what the story behind the Ithica tuning was? Who wrote it? Has it been used for any other songs before/since Ithica?

I'm up for Germany or Spain. I like sausages and both countries do a brilliant job of them. Italy are about the most boring team since Rangers (sorry Enzo and Kiko). What happened to the beautiful game?

Can you give us some more details on what happened with the appeal for video material for the possible DVD? Like how much stuff did you find and get sent and was the reason the DVD didn't happen because you didn't get sent enough good stuff or was there another reason for the postponement?
Also I've always hoped you would rerecord some of your early stuff like Summer and Helicon 2. I don't think it would be disrespectful to the original versions, they'd be left intact. Classical music gets rerecorded and rearranged all the time and I'd love to have multiple versions of Mogwai tunes. I love it on the Zidane OST.
Lastly, how do you feel about playing at all seater concert halls like the QEH? I wish you would play places like that all the time and I'm sure you appreciated the lack of chatter and clinking of lager bottles. Is it hard to get away from traditional gig venues for bands like yours and i it something you would like to do more of in the future?

one thing i've always wondered is how much money do you guys actually make from the band? obviously enuf so that you don't have to do anything else, but would you classify yourselves as rich?

Hi 1) I don't think we got any stuff for the DVD, at least nothing good enough to be shown to anyone. 2) Why live in the past Chocky? Classical music gets re-recorded by different orchestras and philharmonics from the originals. This would mean the Dandy Warhols would have to record Come On Die Young and I just don't see it sounding so hot. The Zidane OST doesn't have the same song re-recorded, it has a similar theme or motif or "bit" if you want. Completely different from what you have misunderstood here. 3) I've warmed to the seated gig. Used to hate them but now i think it works quite well. I do like standing shows too though so it must depend on the venue or something. Now let me drink my whisky.

That's a bit of a nosey/rude question though. I wouldn't even ask some of my closest friends what they make in a year so why would you ask someone that you don't even know? I drive a 7 year old silver hatchback 3-Door Peugeot 206 with duct tape holding on the wing mirror and little chance of it passing it's MOT in July. Does that answer some part of your question? Stuart, tell them about the mega-Volvo. Barry
