Just for back from the RFH. The gig was almost ruined did me by some awful sound what i was sitting. The harshness of the treble made my ears ache after about 5 minutes. My friend who this was his first Mogwai gig left after 20 minutes and I nearly did too. Luckily I had my in ear head phones which made it tolerable but also sound quite shite. Shame because they played really well.
Anyone else notice how bad the sound was or was it just where I was sitting. Row j on the right.

I had earplugs in, but even then, there did seem to be some background feedback. Not enough to spoil what was a great set, with the band playing really well. Frint row, right between Stuart and Dom - it really doesn't get much better. Almost wept during Christmas Steps.

Blimey. Is that setlist.fm page right? Small children and Helicon 2?
Really looking forward to tonight now!

I was in Row L very slightly left of centre (much the same as my political views!!) and the sound was spot on although it must be said that it was the quietest I've seen them and also my gig buddy of many many years said exactly the same, I suspect the R.F.H has sound limits but compared to the Cambridge gig where I really had to use plugs last night was a breeze. My only gripe was the gobshite American girl that talked and whooped during songs, not really an issue at the end of a song but FFS just keep quiet and let the rest of us enjoy the set. Lovely to hear some more new songs although I'd love to hear some of the bonus tracks esp Die 1 Dislike
Looking forward to tonight....Clinic as well, let's hope for MFMK?

I was in the row immediately in front of the sound desk and thought the sound was great - maybe quieter than some shows but I still needed earplugs throughout. First play for Helicon 2 since 2008 but I can't remember the last time I saw them play it, some really nice surprises in the setlist. www.youngteam.co.uk/brightlight/eng/gig240114.php(edit - the last time I saw them play Helicon 2 was 13th Jan 2006 at the ICA)

Have to agree thoroughly enjoyable show - lovely to see Christmas Steps (but the lack of uber volume at RFH definitely restricted its impact I thought) I didn't notice anything untoward with the sound - from where me and Whisky were it was cracking - maybe I am still suffering from ATP cos that was LOUD. This wasn't in the same universe. I have never failed to love a Mogwai show....but I really don't like RFH in the least. Horrible couple-y classical night out feel - packed and uncomfortable. I was in two minds about seeing These New Puritans there - that'll be a "no" from me - maybe I was grumpy (surely not!) I felt far happier in the midst of 3000 people at Camber Sands...better class of beard. The show flew by for me even with the distraction of our overseas lady whooping in my earhole(maybe she was blocking out the feedback!) - I must admit I was close to giving her a full dressing down after Remurdered. She was nearly bleedin Murdered. Lovely to meet Rob and his buddy - whose name unforgivably escapes my addled brain - great company - and in case the note didn't work this is the Broadcast type band I currently love: deathandvanilla.bandcamp.com/album/death-and-vanilla-album....and I now want to go again but good luck to Whisky who can be my Saturday night representative.

We must've been in a unlucky spot then because it was the loudest gig I've ever experienced and my ears were aching after the sound check never mind the first song. Ah well. I would gladly have shared some of my volume with those who hadn't enough. Good job I'm going tonight too. With my earplugs just in case...

I was up in row MM and fairly central. I thought the sound took a while to find its feet but it was an excellent show. Glad to see/hear that they're delving into the back catalogue - Small Children was beautiful. There were some loud numbers in this gig, but this wasn't the loudest I've heard them. I think QEH takes that honour. I have a feeling that Remurdered is going to be a firm set-list favourite from now on - it's a belter of a live track.
Thought I saw one bl! badge last night on a gent's jacket, but couldn't be sure. Anyone manage to get a 'blue' tour print? They sold out very quickly - maybe it was just last night's quota they had on sale.

I was wearing my Bl! badge with pride as always. Hoping that tonights show has a few surprises as well

I turned up too early to get one (they were still setting up the merch stall) and then came back too late Maybe ebay might provide some joy in the future. Enjoy the gig tonight!

It was nowhere near as loud as QEH - that was a night when I really could have done with earplugs. But I popped mine out during Rano Pano, and popped them straight back in again - it was loud enough. Bad night for souvenirs - just missed out on the blue poster, and had a setlist snatched from my fingers. But I got some pretty good pictures, which I'll chuck on Flickr later. Very tempted to see if I can pick up a ticket for tonight and do it all again.

We were row L on the right hand side, so not far away from you chocky. I wasn't sure if earplugs would be required at first but soon realised they would be. I really enjoyed the set, and being able to see so well, but at the same time I think standing up and moving is more my way of enjoying a gig. It was quite impossible to sit still during remurdered, which was indeed a belter live. Loved that it was so quiet for Xmas steps. Did anyone smell the malfunctioning amp?!
Said hello to Kenny at the sound desk afterwards and ended up drinking wine with him at the after party upstairs which was an unexpected and lovely way to end the evening :-) Had a wee chat with John and Dom too, and both mentioned the sound and we were discussing the oddness of seated venues with Dom. Despite it also being seated I am still looking forward to bridgewater hall Monday and really hoping for no medicine for regret ...

I was front row of balcony and the volume was just about right I reckon, plus brilliant view. I found the volume at the Cambridge gig in November to be bordering on painful so was quite glad it wasn't so loud.
Christmas Steps was THE obvious highlight but Remurdered sounded great too and Batcat was immense plus helicon 2 sounded great... I was actually really happy that the oldies were different ones than the ones I have seen loads of times (Fear satan, helicon 1 for example). It made the gig all that much better.
I now just regret not getting a ticket for tonight too.

I'd completely forgotten about the smoking amp.....I was really excited about it being a seated venue largely due to the fact that people are usually quiet.....not so last night, apart from our whooping and chatty American friend there were others around that insisted on having a chat during the songs, I'm seriously hoping for better luck tonight.....
One last thing....If they do have the blue poster for sale tonight I can pick up a couple, obviously you'll need to weigh in with P&P cost but I'm happy to pick up a couple....please p.m asap

I thought the show last night was very good, highlights for me were Helicon 2, Xmas Steps and Rumurdered. I can see Remurdered being in their setlist for a good while, sounded superb live.
Wasn't a fan of Heard about you last night, maybe it will grow on me. I also thought the vocals on Take me somewhere nice were really quiet, could hardly hear Stuart.

Well I'm safely settled into a pub near RFH, am in Row E front stalls tonight, if you see a bloke with a shaved head, glasses and a black VW hoodie on, come and say hello. Also, I have forgotten my earplugs, so if it's after the show you may have to wave.

That's two back-to-back incredible shows. Sadly I could only make the first night at the Royal Festival Hall in London. The Friday night gig started off with on entrance to our boys from the late, great Ivor Cutler.
The Friday performance was top rate with every 'Rave Tapes' track sounding relevant and lush. Of the oldies, for me, Rano Pano and Jim Morrison were the stand out tracks from the back catalogue.
And Christmas Steps was a huge and unexpected bonus as an encore.
I was seated in the balcony - B27 - and the sound was fine but refrained, close to the guys who were braying for 'Christmas Steps' as an encore. I told my mate,"no chance" and "that's not going to happen."
Thankfully they were right.
I'm going to niggle - and this is a push given how superb Mogwai were on Friday night at the Royal Festival Hall.
Not loud enough
Werefolf is loved by many but l'm not as fan.
So many tracks on 'Hardcore' that could be easily out truped

Apologies for my typos. I meant Werewolf, of course. Sorry.
And my apologies to all about 'Hardcore'. I''m no flag waver for Mexican Grand Prix and White Noise but I have to confess they both sounded terrific at the Friday RFH gig. Werewolf though was awful, in my subjective opinion. When I closed my eyes it sounded like Bon Jovi.
I'm more of a 'Hawk is Howling' sort of fan, but that's not..
Credit where credit's due...

Sounded great on Saturday. I was in the second row right in front of Dom and even though I brought my earplugs I didn't use them. Stuart was on fire and I'm glad we got We're No Here without Barry because it let him shine. Interesting seeing Luke Sutherland on guitar and also You Don't Know Jesus with Barry on guitar rather than keyboard. Are those both new things?
Great night more than made up for my awful Friday experIence.

Luke has played guitar on a couple of songs since the HWNDBYW tour. I'm pretty sure Barry has been on guitar on YDKJ for a while now, though I stand to be corrected on that one ...

So, anyway - that was the best Mogwai show I've seen for a long time. Why? First of all, the sound (where I was) was pin sharp, and loud without being too loud. I forgot to bring earplugs, but I wouldn't have needed them. My ears were buzzing afterwards but today they're fine (compare the last time I forgot my earplugs at Bexhill when I actually thought I'd permanently damaged my hearing). As soon as the distortion pedals were hit in "Travel" I thought "Yes, this is going to be good". The seated venue wasn't really an issue. At a few points it would have been good to get up and move a bit to the music, but it wasn't oppressive and having a seat by the gangway helped. The setlist. Namely, White Noise, Jim Morrison, Rano Pano, Batcat, and MGP. Whilst I've nothing against any of those songs, they've pretty much all been played at all five shows I've been to since the start of the HWNDBYW tour (in fact, looking back on the BL! site, the only times they haven't was Batcat at Cambridge last November and MGP at Birmingham when the sequencer failed). And they were replaced with some of the songs I've hardly heard for a while and are my favourites - Jesus, Travel, Happiness and We're No Here. Not only that, but Blues Hour reappeared again after its omission on Friday. Yes, I would have loved to hear Small Children and Helicon 2, but out of the two nights, personally, I hit the jackpot on that one. Which is a nice change after Dublin 2009 when the setlist for the night I didn't attend knocked it out of the ballpark. So overall, a great night, although my wallet (tickets, train, hotel, London pub prices) may not agree.

Have to disagree with you (surprise!) about the RFH - I thought it was a great place to see Mogwai. I love sit-down gigs in posh venues. Shame I couldn't get to the second show - would love to have seen that set. I bought the Death & Vanilla album when it came out (a couple of years back?) because Normans were raving about it, and rightly so. Their other records have been good too.
