You know, in the five times I've seen Mogwai, they've never once played Xmas Steps, and I don't really mind. More bothered by never having heard Ex-Cowboy. And May Nothing but Happiness only once.

Both MFMK and Killing All The Flies - last showing until last night - Tokyo, 12th Nov 2006
Good to see a few changes, it'll be interesting to see how many tracks they've managed to get together in the (two? three?) days of rehearsals last week.

Great gig, band were really up for in and enjoying themselves, Stuart had plenty of banter with the crowd, especially when he asked was anyone coming to the 3 shows. Had hoped to get cody, maybe next tour!

My Father My King also featured Barry's DS, presumably for the first time: at the very end he started patterning/looping feedback on it, which made for a more rhythmic end than usual. And yes, the band seemed to be enjoying themselves. Helped, I imagine, by one of the more appreciative crowds I've seen at a Mogwai (or any other) gig in a while. I realised it was going to be a good night when the crowd was silent right to the last note of 'Small Children...'; hopefully this continues throughout the weekend. Just before the brutalising Herod/Batcat set closer, Stuart announced they had two songs left, only to be greeted by some grumblings from the crowd, to which he laughingly replied: "It'll be one if I hear any more action." It'll be interesting to see how much the set differs tonight and tomorrow: hopefully we haven't heard the last EP/CODY-era stuff, and presumably the likes of Satan and Helicon 1 will get an airing. I'll be there texting it to myself in my phone, anyway. Also, for what it's worth, I think the Hawk tracks really flourish live in a way some of the Mr Beast songs did not. Last, not least: didn't stay for the Mogwai DJ last night, but Desalvo were good fun and I was surprise how easily the singer (sweaty, tattooed man in a pig/butcher outfit) took the crowd out of their comfort zone. Looking forward to Remember Remember now too.

Mogwai in Dublin, ROUND 2
Jim/Friend/SS/I Know?/Ithaca/TYSE/Travel/Hunted (restarted because vocoder failed)/Helicon 1/2 Rights/Ratts/Battcatt... then Yes!/Fear Satan
I'll try to remember some details tomorrow, but overall: better setlist, worse crowd.

He's right, of course. My mistake.
No mention of the Irish Grand Slam last night. I guess the band don't watch rugby.

Makes me think: I'm not actually sure I've ever heard Kids Will Be Skeletons live before, I'd have to check the gigography. And I saw them at least twice around the time of Happy Songs. The variety in the setlist was a real joy, though. I'm predicting I Love You... and We're No Here to get outings tonight, and maybe something from CODY if we're lucky.
Re: Hunted by a Freak... they got all the way to the 'chorus' before Stuart called a halt. He then told a story about how Dominic and Martin both went to see Prince during his London residency a couple of years back, and Dominic saw a show where Prince played all the hits, and Martin saw a show where he played endless funk jams and just 10 seconds of Purple Rain.
So I guess Mogwai consider Hunted by a Freak one of their 'hits'.

Didn't realise those two were out of favour; I was just thinking of crushing epics they could close things out with now that we've had Herod/MFMK/Satan etc., not that I'd mind in the slightest seeing any of those again.
Kubrick/Tracy would be amazing. Still holding out hope for May Nothing but Happiness.

Hope I've got that right, my phone ran out of battery after '...Flies'. no doubt we'll get confirmation via plasmatron's twitter.
Tonight was simply immense, and ranks up there with the best 'gwai shows I've ever seen. The setlist was pure fan service for those of us who were there every night, with no less than eight songs that didn't feature on Friday or Saturday. I Love You is a monster live, and We're No Here may have been the loudest things got all weekend, but the real highlights were the two Come On Die Young tracks, played here back to back, and beautifully. The crowd was meek and appreciative throughout, and Stuart said very little indeed. But after a blinding 'You Don't Know Jesus' he took a moment to add yet another thank you to the weekend's litany, and then a quieter 'Goodnight'. The band hefted their guitars one last time. What's left in the tank, I thought? They've played all the monoliths. Not quite. A snarling, seething 'Glasgow Mega-Snake' tore the doors of the Academy.
Edit: if I've counted right, Mogwai played 28 different songs over the course of the last three nights.

that is a fantastic setlist there. it really makes me think they really had something special in mind for these dublin shows. if your calcs are right, to have played 28 different songs over 3 nights is ssuperb. i hope the rumours that they were recording these nights for a future dvd release are correct cause they've got some immense selections to chose from.

Edit: if I've counted right, Mogwai played 28 different songs over the course of the last three nights. yep, spot on. The only tracks they've played this year and didn't air in Dublin were Ex-Cowboy, Yes! I Am A Long Way From Home and Secret Pint.

Anyone seen a setlist, photos, review from the third Brooklyn show last night? Nothing from Stuart, nothing on Flickr, can't get on Last.FM from work (thankfully Birmimgham LEA have had the good sense to block access to all social networking from schools)

thanks, I found this earlier. it's missing Hunted By A Freak, btw. a couple of nice sets of photos linked from BV and now from BL as well - 'Redboy' has some really funny facial shots of various band members whilst they're playing, including one of John yawning?!

those were some very nicely varied setlists.... so how many cameras were shooting the shows?
i'm looking for a 10-cam mega-mix with angles changing every second or so.... that seems all the rage.... and horrible they are too. i trust ol' vincent to do a sterling job of this...
